JP DEN TEX is an ‘Emotional Nomad’ wandering in a musical landscape between Americana and European music styles such as French Chanson.
JP's first noticeable musical adventure was in the early 70’s as a member of Tortilla, a legendary Dutch band whose music now would be described as alt.country. Famous author and music critic Jan Donkers wrote in underground magazine Aloha about their (unfortunately) only album ‘Little Heroes’ … a magnificent album, that I can recommend to everybody, without the (possibly) restrictive clause that this is a Dutch recording.
In the 80’s Den Tex recorded five critically acclaimed solo albums including the sublime and now much sought after ‘A Quiet Street in Paris’. His lyrics changed slowly from observations (mostly in the third person) into very personal short stories with the author himself being the main character. Gradually European musical elements were added and Spanish, French or Italian lyrics integrated. At the beginning of the 90’s JP interrupted his solo activities for participation in a band project called Les Gueux (CD ‘After Hours’ – 1992). In 1998 he went solo again, by releasing a touching, very personal new album called ‘Emotional Nomads’. It described the sudden break-up of his long, romantic love affair with then girlfriend and 'wild angel' Claire… Painstakingly honest, that’s how I'd like to be, JP wrote in the CD booklet.
This musical diary - ‘Emotional Nomads’ - made a deep impression on Jindra Markus, established filmmaker and regular right hand-man of director Paul Verhoeven. To such an extent, that he decided to try to turn it into a film. Consequently he started following JP and the band during a series of performances and recording sessions. But while filming Jindra became also interested in the unusual lifestyles and emotional insecurities of some of the other members of the musical crew. By and by a different film started developing...
Emotional Nomads tells the intimate story of "finding love in the lowlands", by observing a group of well-known (alternative country) musicians on the road. That emotional security is hard to come by is a problem each one of them has to cope with in their own restless manner. Singer/songwriter (and bandleader) JP sort of ends up marrying music itself. BART, the bass player, finds consolation in his platonic love for a red-haired resistance fighter (killed in World War 2). Sound-engineer SANDER loses his grip in his never ending quest for a beautiful sound-scape. Whereas JP's musical daughter BELOU discovers unexpected bliss in her new-born baby, engendered by yet another (passing) musician….
