notes
Just Plain Bill challenges themselves and their listeners with Hedonistic Rituals of the Unemployed. The addition of horns, strings, and other orchestral instruments to their basic guitar, bass, and drums has created a concept album that could have been recorded in the late 60's or early 70's.
With quirky, Americana type lyrics that are reminiscent of Ray Davies, but with weirdness like Robyn Hitchcock, Michael Stipe or Wayne Coyne; Just Plain Bill touches on subjects of crime, bulimia, insomnia, and escape.
It also includes a rendition of Fancy by The Kinks.

-instrumentation rivals Spike Jones-'tongue in cheek' lyrics-Beach Boys to Modes
author: DomWith a touch of the 'tongue in cheek' lyrics of Tom Waits and the catchy rhythms reminiscent of the Greatful dead... harmonies ranging anywhere from the Beach Boys to Modesky, Martin and Wood and compositions rivaling that of Moon Dog and Eberhard Weber this CD is certain to to be a hit and take it's place in the annals of unique compilations. A lively mix of that long gone Rockabilly beat with undertones of dissonance like only Sun Ra could congigate this has a real twist of Punk, Acid and funkadelity that this reviewer can really groove on. I think this group might have a real future as a backup band for John Scholfield or Bella Fleck (to hell with the Flecktones!) and could easily be jammin' with Chick Corea. The instrumentation rivals that of Spike Jones and the accomplished musicality is very impressive. Really, really liked the French horn part! And Milt Jackson should be jealous of those vibes!
