notes

Joi is not the first in her family to be a first. Her father, Joe Gilliam, was the NFL's first black quarterback leading the Pittsburgh Steelers to two unforgettable Super Bowls. And just as the Steelers have once again found their stride, so has Joi with her 4th release TENNESSEE SLIM IS THE BOMB.

For those that pride themselves on knowing the behind the scenes scoop of the music industry, Joi has been one to talk about for, now over, a decade. When her first single, “Sunshine and the Rain,” off her critically acclaimed, Dallas Austin produced debut album The Pendulum Vibe, hit airwaves in '93, she was instantly lauded as "the new Madonna". Madonna, herself, was so in love with the album that she went on to hire Dallas Austin to produce her Bedtime Stories album. Madonna is also responsible for making the call that landed Joi's becoming the first black model in a major Calvin Klein print ad campaign.

Joi's original style, not easily classified, was the first to be tagged "neo-soul". But, as an artist and performer, Joi is beyond classification. What she represented as a new voice of black womanhood was further celebrated on the Mario Van Peebles film, Panther, soundtrack where her song “Freedom,” from the Pendulum Vibe album, was rerecorded with an all-star cast of female singers including: Alliyah, Mary J. Blige, En Vogue, Michelle N'degleocello, TLC, Queen Latifah, Vanessa Williams, SWV, Brownstone and many more.

For her sophomore effort, The Amoeba Cleansing Syndrome, Joi and creative partner Austin, brought in the assistance of legendary pioneers Fishbone to be her backing band. The albums first single, written for her father, coined the term "Ghetto Superstar". Yet, despite its MTV buzz status, when her then label EMI folded, so did the release of the album.

Ever the darling of urban media, Joi's high-profile marriage to Goodie Mob front-man Big Gipp took center stage while she took a three year hiatus from her solo efforts to raise their daughter Keypsiia Blue Daydreamer (a very beautiful, pregnant Joi appears in D'Angelo's video, "Lady").

Of course, even though her solo projects were on hold, as a member of Atlanta's infamous Dungeon Family, her voice graced the tracks of several Outkast, Goodie Mob, TLC songs and non-ATLien artists such as Robbie Williams, George Clinton, Curtis Mayfield, Queen Latifah, Too Short, and D.O.C. to name a few.

When Joi received a call from ex-TonyToniTone front-man, Raphael Saadiq, to become a member of the then Hip Hop/R&B super group, Lucy Pearl, she agreed and ended her three year hiatus. The group received nominations from both the Grammy's and the American Music Awards.

In 2000, Joi inked a deal with Universal to release her third album, Star Kitty's Revenge and this time experienced her newly released album falling through the cracks when the label went through a major changing of the guard. She then signed with Raphael Saadiq's boutique label, Pookie Records and began recording TENNESSEE SLIM IS THE BOMB – which she executive produced. Upon completing the recording, Joi and Raphael parted business ties amicably, in the name of not allowing another masterpiece to fall through the cracks.

Joi is pleased to announce the formation of her new label JOILICIOUS whose intent, aside from releasing her own efforts, is to be a safe haven for artists that are seen as "amazing" yet "unmarketable" due to the fickle nature of the now suffering music industry.

As a songwriter/producer Joi has also formed Dirty Debutante Productions for the sake of producing up and coming artists possibly associated with different labels.

  • Tennessee Slim is the damn BOMB!
    author: Carmela

I am a long time fan of Joi. I won't lie to you, I'm bias, I love this chick. As always Joi brings a mix of funk, soul, rock and just sheer female energy to her body of work. Uncle George (Clinton)drops in several times to give the album a little extra poetry. My favorite cute on this are too many to tell, but one that really makes you shake your booty is "Say,say little fine ass *igga." I caught Joi live right before Christmas and she jammed some of these newer joints and I was not disappointed, she really is the Bomb. This album marks the recordbooks that, for anyone who may not have known, Joi is still the reigning Queen of Underground!

  • EVERY Song is Excellent!
    author: Myisha Harris

I never heard about Joi until I found her here on CDBABY and I'm excited and sad at the same time. Excited to have found her, and sad that more people haven't. This is a wonderful CD. Every song is excellent, I can hardly pick a favorite. Please pick this one up. Thank you to CDBABY for carrying this rare gem.

  • Great CD
    author: K.R.

Plain and simple, this cd is the shiznit. I cannot go one day without hearing "I'm So Famous" Joi is a true representation of great music without the dilution of a major label. I really liked Star Kitty's Revenge but I love Tennessee Slim is the bomb.

  • Truly "the bomb."
    author: Daryl

JOI really knows how to keep the sex in funk alive--and, at no lesser quality, has she proven that here. "Tennessee Slim is the bomb" is her fourth installment in the music industry, and probably her finest yet. Amazing production, clever lyrics, and tight beats bring this album into a brilliant light that over-shadows all of the commercial releases in any previous years and years to come. If you're a fan of her older works, check out this wonderful advancement in her musical career that has brought her funk to a higher level. A true testament to her staying-power as an independant artist that should be more well-known, but is disgracefully ignored and has, shamefully, always fallen through the cracks. This album is hard, and it's like a kick in the nuts you love :)

  • Tennessee Slim is INDEED THE BOMB!!!!
    author: Vanity Smurf

I love Joi - she has an amazing voice and isn't afraid to tell the truth. She also isn't afraid to be vulnerable and show her feelings. Kudos Joi - keep doing the dang thang!!!!

  • JOI-LICIOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Enough said!
    author: Bonetta

This completes my Joi collection. I now have every one of her 4 albums. Believe me, they were well worth both the wait and the search.

  • Refreshing a Vacation for your ears.

    Tennesse Slim is the BOMB!!!

  • Joi's latest CD is sure nuff "The Bomb"!
    author: Carlotta

Wow! This CD just bout blew me away. I have always been in awe of Joi's singing skills but she takes it to a whole 'nother level here. She does more than just sing her songs, she feels them.

  • author: Arekah

I had heard of Joi and her song Lick is a favorite of mine but I over heard this album playing in a local store in Memphis, TN. I couldn't help but to be drawn to the sounds and quickly asked who the sista was. To my excitement it was Joi. I ran to a pc and ordered this project and have been jammin it at work and in my car since I got it. My favorite tracks have to be Gravity, Lifetime of Nightime, I'm so Famous, and Dance with Yesterday. Of course all of the tracks hit in some way or another. This cd embodies a spirit like no other that takes on a person of it's on. Joi is widely over looked and her die hard fans will continue to support art like this. Looking forward to the next project. Peace and Blessings Arekah

the cd is smoothe, funk, and nasty soul-i love it!

  • The album is incredible.
    author: 2wo

The album is incredible. Joi sounds like a a Sign O' The Times era female Prince. I'm pleasantly surprised. I've liked certain songs from her before but this is definitely a comprehensive effort that may be the one that has the power to transcend. I hope that she gets the opportunity to effectively promote and tour on this record. I appreciate the openness of the writing and thank you for "Dance With Yesterday."

  • A True Artist At Work
    author: thebluestdiamond

This album really shows growth in Joi's work as an artist. The songs are so well written, it really sets a new precedent when it comes to soul music. Don't hesitate in making this purchase.

  • I was a Joi virgin...
    author: Tena

The CD is great!! I love I'm So Famous and, of course, TSITB. I have never owned a Joi CD and have heard a couple cuts form StarKitty Revenge but I was very impresed by this CD. Probably could have done without the George Clinton interludes, but I do appreciate his participation. Joi is a bad, bad girl...know it and believe, people...

  • This cd is so good... I don't have to skip any songs!
    author: jbaby

I was recently introduced to musical style of Joi and was thoroughly impressed. I seen her perform in Santa Monica, Ca. in the temple bar, her performance radiated sensuality and I was surprised to know that what you hear on the cd is REALLY how she sounds. Joi has such poise and discipline with her voice it's impossible not to love her... Kudos Joi... waiting for your next cd.. I'll be first in line to get it. 'Your newest fan' J

  • joi has done it again!
    author: lady e

Joi's creative spirit has once again transferred itself to her music. Her refusal to transform to the musical status quo has produced an infusion of sensuality and musical prowess.

  • Tennessee Slim is the Bomb indeed. :-)

Joi is obviously one of those artists whose music gets categorised as "R&B/Soul" or "Hip Hop," but the title track completely caught me off guard when I first heard a few seconds of it, because it just sounded so different to anything I'd ever heard before.... Please click the link to read this review in its entirety.

  • Phenomenal album
    author: E-Dante

With this album Joi proves that Tennessee Slim is really the Bomb. The lyrics are deep and the production stands above any of that commercial junk we hear on radio today. My favorite joints are Maybe, To My Lover's House, I'm So Famous & Say Say Lil Fine...

  • Fire.....
    author: Cecily-Bleu

Ok, so I wasn't surprised that Ms. Joylicious was going to deliver pure fire. I wasn't shocked that Tennessee Slim is the Bomb was..... well the bomb. I am still amazed at what my ears hear and my heart thumps to when I pull of the plastic and peel off that annoying sticky strip across the top of the cd. I take a deep breath and exhale. At last MUSIC, real damn music. I'm sick of the soft sh*t, give me that "yeah, I said it n***a", soul stirring music. That "I meant to say that sh*t", music. Well, Joi said it and I'm saying thank you Joi for still continuing to be Joi and given us Joi's music. I love the fact that people stare at me when I'm in my car as I bounce and swing my neck to "Say,Say Li'l Fine A** N***a, and I give e'm that look like what you lookin at, you crazy, this sh*t is HOT. I't Fire!!! That's what you are Joi Fire and I soooo appriciate you and your music. Don't every let them blow out your flame.

Tennessee Slim Is The BOMB is the work of genious! Those that don't know need to order this joint today b/c you will get addicted after note one.

  • Joi is the queen of Slop!
    author: Soul Jones

Joi is known to be a naughty minx on record with sex always dripping from the speaker. This album though also displays scars of a past relationship. But Joi triumphantly looks back and declares “I’m So Famous” and in “Lifetime of Nighttime” that she still wants to “give it to you wid her shoes on”. Joi’s finest album yet. My advice would be to order this - skip work for the day, crack open a beer/roll one up/buy a box of chocolates whatever your into and just slop out.

  • Album Of The Year!!!!!!!!!!!!
    author: Lina

i know its only april, but this album is a strong contender to be album of the year, this is joi's best work to date. even though i've been a fan for years, this is her first album i never wanted to skip a track on. but if i could pick one song as my favorite on the album, it would have to be Maybe

  • i 2nd that e-motion!!! peace & love peace & love

  • i 2nd that e-motion!!! peace & love peace & love

  • she is indeed...the Bomb!!!
    author: Georgia Slim

the album is off the chain...the hottest song on the album so far, is "Maybe"...if there's a song to be released to the radio stations, that should be it,either that or "Another Rocket"...we (the fans) love those 2 songs!!!
