notes

Considered a "documentary band" or a "rock'n roll repertory orchestra" rather than simply a cover band, The Johnson Brothers specialize in performing meticulously reproduced renditions of challenging large-band material rarely heard in local clubs.

Over the past 13 years, the band performed as the onstage orchestra for the University of Kentucky Theater Department's production of "The Who's Tommy," and performed every molecule of The Beatles', "Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band", and the Beatles' "White Album."

In addition to a growing list of original compositions, the repertoire includes work by The Allman Bros., Eagles, Jethro Tull, Elton John, Steely Dan, Derek and the Dominoes, The Dixie Dregs, The Beatles, Little Feat, Stevie Wonder and Bruce Hornsby. Stunt numbers of particular note include The Beatles' impossible "I am the Walrus," "Strawberry Fields" and side two of "Abbey Road."

The band continues to evolve by venturing into the realm of original Johnson music with "Tastes Like Chicken." A powerful combination of funk, rock, jazz, blues and latin grooves.

The Jbros are constantly looking for the "next big challenge". Having already done "Tommy". "Pepper" and "Whitey" the opportunity arose to stretch so we jumped at it. In July '04, the band was invited to act as the pit orchestra for the local "Shakespeare in the park" production of Jesus Christ Superstar. The response was tremendous. We had no idea! Two months later the band played the reception for "The Making of the Greatest Album of All Time: Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" at the Idea Festival in Lexington, Ky., featuring Sir George Martin!

Now in it's 13th year the "JB's" are alive and kicking!

  • Tastes Like The Whole Damn Barnyard!
    author: Chewy

These cats know how to play & most importantly, they know when not to play. This is some very tasty stuff. One of the biggest joys 'bout listening to this CD, is that each song is a little stylistically different then the one before. And these guys do something that a LOT of bands need to do today...don't worry 'bout no formula, don't worry 'bout no trends. Just play some good music...PERIOD!!! If you like it Funky, Rockin', Bluesy, Jazzy & you like great music & songs, you'll like this band & this CD.

Catchy tunes and irreverant songwriting...what a great combination! Eagles meets Little Feat meets Blues Brothers meets Frank Zappa...you get the idea. Just got back from a long roadtrip where this CD got me through miles of hot desert with my toes tapping and a smile on my face.

  • Get Funky
    author: Kinny Landrum

Lots of great playing here, with good songs, particularly Get Lucky, Tonight, One Step and Uncle Charlie with its opening 5/4 groove. Funky as the "other" Brothers Johnson with influences from Little Feat and the Eagles. Good stuff

  • Taste Like - Anthing But Chicken
    author: Michael Christman

I sat down for dinner with the this CD. Thankfully it tasted like anything but chicken - and I like chicken. This for me is a Red Meat, Potato Lovin' Beer Drinkin' Heck of a Band. I love the blend of the Hammond Organ and Slide Guitar in You Never Come. One Step just floored me. Here are a bunch of white guys playing the blues like they know what it's all about - like George Carlin says: it's not enough to know what notes to play, you've got to know why they need to be played. These guys do! The writing is diverse. It has a great jazz feel and a sense of humor - Steely Dan like. It was a wonderful meal. Keep up the good work guys. I hope we can eat together again soon. Listeners should stick around in the last track for the after dinner mint.

  • Pros at Work
    author: Melanie Johnson

Great tunes, great players, great disc. Blues, funk, and even 60's pop all shine in the hands of these talented guys. Standout tracks include the bluesy "One Step", the hilarious and funky "Doghouse", the 12-string shimmer of "Just Turned Out That Way", and "Montego", with it's Steely Dan-influenced feel.

  • KY Chicken = dash of blues + a pinch of Steely Dan = The JBB Funki Special!
    author: George Archer

These boys deliver the goods. If you want funk, you got "Uncle Charlie", ya wannna take it slow and easy? The warmth and jazz feel of "Montego" or "Tonight" will bring you to tears. "Dog House" is already a regional hit covered on the country charts (presented here in it's original funk blues format). As good a CD as you can buy without the 11 "herbs and spices". It's simple: get this one. This group IS the total package. Check out the website too, fun stuff!
