With haunting, traditional folk themes dripping off the piano keys, hanging in the air like wafts of smoke, rising, curling and dissipating, this collection speaks to the musical, political and emotional history of Russia, as Jan Johansson wraps these gorgeous melodies inside subtle and voluptuous bass and stealthy drums. One is reminded of Prokofiev's Lieutenant Kije Suite, a similar, fragile and dangerous quality; only here, in "Jazz på Ryska," these themes, which also venture into the lumbering, drunken and jolly, are vividly set and explored through jazz instrumentation and vocabulary. A stunning project from start to finish.
