notes

Joanna Mell is an award-winning harper, singer and storyteller residing in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. After playing guitar, mandolin and keyboards, and singing with the Irish band "Cuckoo's Nest" for many years, she took up the Celtic harp to accompany her singing in Feises on the East Coast.

The Celtic harp quickly became her main instrument and she has not only mastered this instrument in both the traditional and contemporary styles of performance, but has garnered quite a following nationally for her sensitive and exquisite arrangements of traditional Celtic tunes. Joanna performs at many venues on the East Coast, including Celtic festivals, libraries and public concerts, and performs on a regular basis at Donegal Square, Main Street, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. She plays for High Tea at Granny McCarthy's Tea Room at Donegal Square on Wednesday afternoons from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.

Please visit her at www.joannamell.com. Joanna has made the re-creation of the bardic arts of ancient Ireland her life's work.

  • Absolutely beautiful music that warms the heart.
    author: Connie

Beautiful music that warms your heart and relaxes your spirit. This cd will relieve all your stresses and take you to a place that is tranquil. Calgon take me away! - well this cd will do just that.

  • Familiar tunes that sound fresh and enjoyable
author: Kevin Kinney, The Folk Harp Journal, No. 119

This recording manages to capture a diverse set of moods and feels, all the while staying true to the fundamental nature of the harp. It takes a special set of hands to be able to play familiar tunes and have them sound fresh and enjoyable, and Ms. Mell clearly has those hands. Ms. Mell manages to make these tunes her own - adding in some very nice harmonies, wonderful ornaments (really wonderful, in fact) and some slightly altered rhythms. For those new to the genre, this could well serve as a "must have" basic primer of Irish Traditional music on the harp. For those who are not new, the CD will serve as a reminder of why these tunes are so popular in the first place. "Come Ye Back" introduced me to new facets of each - facets which I am not ashamed to say I plan to incorporate into my own playing of the tunes!

  • Sparkling, fresh interpretations of the most popular harp tunes
author: Jamie O'Brien, "The Irish Edition", Feb. 2003

Bucks County harp player Joanna Mell has put together 15 tracks on her latest album, selecting some of the most known and popular tunes from the harp repertoire and beyond and approached them with sparkling, fresh interpretations..... Joanna delves deeply into the tunes and interprets them with great feeling and style, breathing fresh life into them.
