If someone wrote a book about British blues-rock and failed to mention Jim McCarty, the book would have a gaping hole. McCarty was the Yardbirds' original drummer, and failing to mention him would be like not mentioning Cream's Ginger Baker or Led Zeppelin's John Bonham. The Yardbirds weren't strictly a blues-rock band; many of their songs favored a haunting, quasi-Gregorian outlook. But blues-rock was an important part of what they did, and McCarty's blues-rock side dominates Outside Woman Blues. This 2002 release finds the drummer leading a quartet that is billed as the Jim McCarty Blues Band, which also includes guitarist/singer John Idan and ex-members of Mott the Hoople (guitarist/singer Ray Majors) and the Strawbs (bassist Rod Demick). Not everything on this CD is blues-rock; "Lawyers, Guns and Money," for example, is '70s-style arena rock, while the moody "Heart's Not in It" is Police-like reggae-rock. But Outside Woman Blues favors blues-rock more often than not, and all of the material is solid - that is true of the studio recordings that dominate the disc as well as a few hidden live tracks at the end (including performances of "Train Kept a Rollin'" and the Yardbirds' "Heart Full of Soul").

Overall, the sound could be described as London by way of Chicago (as in Chess Records, Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon, and Little Walter) and Detroit (as in John Lee Hooker)

There are also 3 hidden tracks on the end of the disc that feature Chris Dreja of The Yardbirds on rhythm guitar. Recorded live at The 100 Club in London.

    I bought this cd after going to a Yardbirds gig. It has not been out of my cd player. Fantastic British Blues at it's best. Takes me back to when I first started listerning to soooo good music. 12 out of 10

    I didn't know what to expect, coming at this from the point of view of the owner of lots of 60's Yardbirds stuff but not much else from these guys from more recent years. What a revelation! This is busting with gritty blues, and has that good old guitar break grin factor in spades. Outstanding.

    Then you really dont know what you have been missing. This CD is like riding down a West Texas Highway, an 80 mph warm weather cruise. Good, smooth. open road pavement and a solid Harley 88 throbbing between your knees and a hard belly sitting behind! Life is better then good! Looky here! The music starts out great, the singing is great, everything is great and then suddenly it's... What the hell was that??? A song pops up like porno spam and grabs you by the balls and pulls. Pulls really hard! Your heart breaks and your lust explodes and damn if you dont feel 19 again! Hell this is Rock n Roll! This is Blues. The way its meant to be. No thinktank-puttogetherventure-brainless-follow-the-herd instinct studio-execs, no wham-bam-thank-you-mam that was nice here. Just 100% Pure great shit! The stuff your Mother warned you about! Weakest cut? I just Cant pick one. It just isnt there. Greatest surprise cut? Two Steps Ahead. Best twist in story line? Slow Driver. My favorite cut? Heavy Weather and Two Steps Ahead. Best "I'll give it an 8 Mr. Clark"? Hearts Not In It, I can dance to that, (if Like I could dance). Buy this, steal this, pirate this, hell whatever you have to do, get this CD!
