ABOUT JILL TRACY:

Jill Tracy is both villainess and heroine of her own musical netherworld. The San Francisco-based artist has garnered multiple awards and a devoted following for her evocative cinematic music, sophisticated lyrics, old-world glamour, and curious passion for strange tales.

Hailed by critics as a "femme fatale for the thinking man," Tracy was described by NPR's All Things Considered as "utterly intriguing... luring you into a magical kingdom solely of her creation." LA Weekly calls her "very distinctive and exciting."

Her signature sound conjures up images of wonder cabinets, hidden passageways and opium dens. Of marvels, monsters, and mayhem. But at the same time, it's shockingly new. Jill Tracy coos in a voice of cut-velvet smoke, ornately framed by her dark trademark classical-cum-parlour piano, creating a world of opulence and danger, of magic and madness. As one critic put it: "You know it's not safe here; but with Jill Tracy as your guide, you'll be in no hurry to leave."

Backed by the Malcontent Orchestra, a lavish ensemble of strings, woodwinds, drums and percussion, Jill Tracy's music creeps its way under your skin in a tantalizing, yet delightfully unsettling fashion.

With her forays into filmmaking, writing, acting and theatre, Jill Tracy is redefining the image of modern day renaissance artist. But beneath her trademark sound and style lurks cold steel. No corporate-contrived cookie cutter blandness here. She is refreshing proof that smart... is sexy.

Following the critical acclaim of her 1995 solo live album "Quintessentially Unreal," "Diabolical Streak' is Jill Tracy's first full-length studio album. Includes stunning collector's 12 panel fold-out booklet designed by motion picture SFX artist Robert Rossello.

FROM THE PRESS:

"...positively poetic...Jill Tracy has made an exquisite, even luscious record with 'Diabolical Streak'...she wraps you with a smoky coo and as you soften under that sophisticated smirk you realize too late she's tied you to the third rail while the cobwebs descend and the seas fill with blood."
SF WEEKLY

"When you hear Jill Tracy's lush, sultry voice and experience the spooky melancholy of her lyrics, you're hooked...you can't escape the haunting and seductive powers of her macabre torch songs. As you listen, your will is no longer your own."
ELECTRONIC MUSICIAN

"I find Jill Tracy's music utterly intriguing...I love it!"
Susan Stamberg, host NPR's ALL THINGS CONSIDERED

Jill Tracy is unique - a soul out of its time; intriguing, intelligent, sensual, and just diabolical enough to make you wonder... she enchants and tempts with a delicious sense of danger... Whatever I say, doesn't even come close to describing this CD and its creator properly- it is THAT GOOD ... It's unfathomable to me that some major label hasn't picked her up yet and kissed her feet... or why a big film maker like David Lynch hasn't contracted her to do film scores."
STARVOX MAGAZINE

"Like a film noir femme fatale, Jill Tracy is gorgeous; ballerina thin and Victorian porcelain pale.....a stunningly hypnotic performer."
SF BAY GUARDIAN

"very distinctive and exciting...Jill Tracy sings with the kind of breathy intimacy that will fulfill your dreams of being tortured by beautiful women."
LA WEEKLY

"an elegant and mysterious siren"
VILLAGE VOICE

"Lyrically, Jill Tracy's work is every bit as naughty as the brainless, bombastic transgressions of the likes of Marilyn Manson and Limp Bizkit. But with her refined elegance and roots in jazz, film noir supper clubs and turn of the century circus sideshows, Tracy exemplifies a far more cosmopolitan approach to sin. Instead of raw angst, her music is full of smoldering cultivated grace, piquant with the hint of a sly smile. Her voice is alternately sweet and raspy, coyly curling around her macabre lyrics like wisps of smoke from the end of a long cigarette."
SHIFT MAGAZINE

"One must be careful of Jill Tracy. The pale and shadowy chanteuse quickly draws you in with her noirish compositions; her songs are eerie and enticing, clever and clawing, and replete with gothic glamour. The San Francisco-based New York émigré' likes her fare dark and bloody, sprinkled with cabaret charm, old-time chamber ragtime chops and an almost overpowering sense of seductive gloom."
PACIFIC SUN

"You could get drawn in (or drawn and quartered) by Jill Tracy and her Malcontent Orchestra.....her elegant voice is a sultry moan, a breathy purr, a throaty siren's call... Jill Tracy has a spine-tingling signature sound...Extraordinary indeed."

Made me buy this CD, that is. The fabulous goth belly dance goddess dances to Jill's music. Now, I am addicted to this dark goddess of jazz! Mysterious, macabre, playful lyrics. Soothing, lush vocals. I can smell the opium, taste the absynthe, feel the flames of her sacred fires sear my skin. I am seduced into her dark, lovely world and never want to leave!

  • Completely awesome

This CD is fantastic! It's seductive and stimulating. Her talent is beyond words.

  • My first impression of Jill Tracy's music is timelessness
    author: Charles

My first impression of Jill Tracy's music is timelessness. Her songs sound like "standards," songs that could've been around for decades. At the same time, they are imaginative and beautiful. I've come across plenty of new bands that impress me with their sound, but once I get used to them, the thrill goes away. Tracy's songs have what most of those don't--substance, in addition to style. And make no mistake, she's got plenty of style. She comes across like a cabaret singer, but with rock sensibilities as well (she lists the Cure as an influence). Tom Waits is definitely a touchstone, but she's much smoother. She's got a beautiful voice and a piano style that makes me think of Erik Satie's works. Strings from her backing band, the Malcontent Orchestra, give the music a sophisticated jazz flavor. Her songs are very mature, with lyrics that could stand alone as poetry. They conjure up images of romance and death and wickedness. If you like goth, cabaret, old movies, murder mysteries, if you can in any way see the beauty and humor in the darkness--or if you just want to hear some amazing songcraft, Jill Tracy is for you.

  • Total seduction for the darker side
    author: Mark

This is the soundtrack of smokey cabaret's, singers with a voice of silk and a shard or two of glass, to be enjoyed with your favorite absinthe or cognac. This album almost leaves me speechless with how good it is. From Jill's sultrily seductive voice that sings songs that make you love her even while she's twisting the knife in your back, to the lush compositions and instrumentation, this is a cd for late at night, when candles are burning and your favorite liquer is weaving its fingers slowly into your brain...

  • I love Jill Tracy

    author: La'Krisha

I love this CD. It is so haunting and beautiful. I love Jill Tracy and I am now a huge fan!

  • Oh Oh OOOOHHHH!
    author: Chelsea

Gorgeous, glimmering, mesmermizing, haunting... Jill Tracy's Diabolical Streak is everything a good CD should be. There's just something about the delivery, something in the way she dances over the piano keys or in the way her voice glides out, but whatever it is, its marks this CD as an unparalelled piece of artistry.

  • HOLY WHERE HAS THIS BEEN HIDING
    author: Richard

I have to say with all the music that is out now its very nice to find a diamond in the rough. This Cd ROCKS!!! The music is haunting, sexy and mistical. I would say if your looking for a refreshing cd, This one is like a big glass of Ice cold water after you have been out side in the heat roasting all day...

" I WANT TO CRAWL INTO IT."

  • I want to crawl on her piano.
    author: Sara

This music is SEXY. When I heard her voice for the first time, I was enchanted. I want to think Jill Tracy would be the vixen who walks into an old-time detectives' office and tells him her problem from between blood red lips. I've never heard anything like it. Ms. Tracy has a talent all her own. Dark, sultry, and captivating, this music invokes many delicious suppressed emotions.

  • WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
    author: Steve Kalb

I was transfixed at this CD. At first you are pulled in by Jill's sultry voice and come hither music, then you are hooked by her lyrics! I look forward to following her career to see what new work she continues to create.

  • sticks in mind
    author: Eric

Very spooky, in a delicous way. It ping pongs around in your mind for hours after listening to it, knocking loose all kinds of creepy, gorey, fantastical, wondrous, naive, imagination-run-amok thoughts stored away since childhood.

  • spooky stuff
    author: alex

You find yourself transported to some smoky jazz joint in Paris ala 1920s and looking around you realize everyone is dressed in black with white powdered faces, blood red lips sipping the darkest red wine money can buy and you think either they're undertakers, vampire wannabes, lost souls who didn't get into heaven or hell and how did you end up here but you're not going to leave because the music is too beautiful to give up and so you sit and write run on sentences like this one hoping that it won't end.

  • simply awesome
    author: Jan

This is a great record, I first heard Jill Tracy on swedish national television (in some documentary) and I went to buy the record straight away. This is actually the second copy I'm buying since my girlfriend likes it very much aswell but I would never copy a CD this great, even to my girlfriend, so I bought her a copy :)

  • This is a fantastic musical journey!
    author: PsychicParrot

What do you get when you cross Tom Waits with Portishead? Something very beautiful, very dark and utterly intriguing. Like a strange and twisted opera this cd takes you wandering into a melodramatic hidden garden. Jill Tracy's vocals are both piercing and soft, a staggering contradiction in a Lewis Carrol-esque journey. Simple, complex, harsh and soft ... this cd takes you away and I love every second.

  • Hauntingly beautiful!
    author: Shay

One of my favorite cds! It makes me want to kick back with a fire going and drink some gin and tonic. Her sultry deep sexy voice and the wonderful piano playing, as well as the great lyrics make this a best buy.

  • author: CD Baby

Is mischief or naughtiness in your cards today? Let this sultry, husky singer help you weave that web with her evocative lyrics and dark, eerie instrumentals. Conjuring up shades of film noir, this female rival of Tom Waits will lead you into her dark, haunting, musical realm. Backed by strings, piano and percussion, this bluesy, foreboding artist will have you grabbing for more. So take cover under your black trench coat and slip away into the dark alleys of CDBABY to buy this CD.

Great CD, something to enjoy while kicked back drinking a glass of absinthe.

  • Sinister, Seductive and Sublime
    author: E. J. Vojkovich

In "Diabolical Streak," Jill Tracy has created a timeless collection of songs that ushers the listener into a dark and magical realm. It's not safe here, but you won't be in any hurry to leave. This is a strangely alluring and subtly disturbing album that sneaks up on you, captures you with its unique style and mordant wit, and never quite turns you loose. Jill Tracy finds a compelling sensuality in everything, from the promise of one wicked night to the fiery end of the world. Beneath the breathy vocals and the force and filigree of Tracy's original piano lines lurks cold steel -- the woman has guts to spare, creating something so distinctive amidst the corporate musical mediocrity that's poisoning the culture. Jill Tracy is a wonderful antidote to that poison. Play this one late at night. See if you can find your way out alive.

  • Tracy's liquid, velvet voice charms and haunts with style and beauty...
author: Walt Anthony - Spellbinder Magic

What can I say? I've given dozens of this CD to my more quirky and tasteful friends, and played my copy till it's worn thin! With a candid air, astounding good humor, imagination gone awry, and murky hum-able melody, Jill Tracy weaves a wicked spell around her listener. If her music were easier to classify, she'd be a major sensation, but if she went mainstream we might loose the eerie mad quality of her parlour music and the beautifully crafted lyrics her fans treasure… This, my favorite CD of Tracy, is more magical than a midnight convention of conjurers, sorceresses, and fairy folk!

  • One of My "Desert Island" Discs
    author: Keith R. Crosley

At the time of its release, I had written that Jill Tracy's "Diabolical Streak" was one of the best albums -- indie or major label -- of the year. At this point, I should really revise that review to say that this album is one of my favorites of all time. This is a wickedly delightful and beautifully produced treat that touches on and transcends many genres including "goth", "cabaret", and "lounge". But even if you're a fan of none of the genres, you must be here for a reason. Now that you've discovered this hidden gem, don't hesitate -- simply buy this CD and let it become one of your favorites as well.

  • The music is superb and the words are deliciously icky.
    author: Barbara A. Dronenburg

Somewhere in the way back of the cave where even the fuzzy, little, sweet bats don't dare to go, are those two other bats... hanging upside-down swinging , gently, to and fro, to this superbly, decadent, music with it's deliciously, icky lyrics.

Oh, I love it I love it! Very noir, very black and white post-poisoning victorian parlour, but oh, so applicable to the present: "Little Ana would not eat..." Complex lyrics, great vocab, wonderful voice. I was hooked before it came in the mail!

  • Diabolical Streak is an Age-Old Masterpiece for the Endtimes
    author: Andrew Wiertella

I only had to listen to the snippits on Jilltracy.com a few times to get completely hooked on this CD. I have been listening to it since I got it. The visual aspect (photography, artwork, etc.) only hints at the genius of intricate lyrics, stories, and emotions that are bewstowed upon the listener through creative uses of classical instruments and raspy vocals. I highly suggest to anyone to give this album a listen.
