notes

The Jazz Pharaohs: this group of Austin musicians, both young and veteran, has had a regular weekly gig for more than 10 years at Austin's famous Elephant Room, playing the old-time jazz that they all love to play.

Though the band has had many members over the past 10+ years, some of the original or long-time members include Stanley Smith (guitar and vocals), Slim Richey (guitar), Dave Biller (guitar), and Freddie Mendoza (trombone and vocals). In recent years, Seela (TorCH) has been a frequent guest vocalist.

Members:
Stanley Smith: clarinet, vocals (tracks 1, 2, 6, 7, 9)
Dave Biller: guitar
Slim Richey: guitar
Special Ed Corey: guitar
Freddie Mendoza: trombone
Adam Booker: bass
John Salmon: drums
Martin Banks: trumpet
Seela: vocals (tracks 4, 8)

  • Surprising blend of jazz and blues
    author: Carl M. Nielsen

This is interesting stuff. A new way around the elder jazzstyles, glowing and swinging with a guitardriven beat and a bluesy feeling. A little like Django meets Muddy Waters, often with suprising and unexpected results. A highlight is "St. James Infimery" played in a version with a touch of Tom Waits.

  • As sweet as it gets!
    author: Datri Bean

This is a sweet CD of a legendary Austin band. Everything Stanley Smith (clarinet, guitar, vocals) does is magic. This CD is like sitting on a big wide porch, on a hot, muggy night, drinking corn whiskey, while listening to some of the most charming players Austin has ever had.
