Heartfelt country-folk-rock with an eclectic edge and a variety of lyrical subjects, featuring acoustic, electric and pedal steel guitars- definitely a little outside the main street.

Review From The New Brunswick Telegraph
October 13th, 2006
Jay Semko - Redberry (Smoothwater Records)

The Northern Pike continues his quiet solo career, away from the boisterous pop of the band. Best known as the singer and writer of thoughtful fist-pumpers Teenland and Things I Do For Money, Semko's more comfortable here, laid-back and a little alt-countryish. Many of the tracks feature pedal steel to great effect, and the down-home feel keeps going with guest harmonies from Serena Ryder and Theresa Sokyrka, who's not the only homey from Saskatchewan: Pikemate Bryan Potvin guest-guitars for several tunes, as well.

The disc's best songs are prairie home companions, including the lovely title track and the heart-tugging Saskatoon Smile. Always a keen observer, Semko now has a more sentimental and reflective style than his Teenland reporting days.

I'm really happy with it - I've been a fan for years and this CD does not disappoint. I really enjoy Saskatoon Smile, which I think is the deepest I've ever heard his voice. They're *all* good, though.

  • A step in the right direction!

What can I say? Jay Semko brings a fresh twist to this collection of intimate songs from the prairie. If you like thought invoking lyrics and great country/folk songs your sure to enjoy this CD.

I have been a fan of Jay's work for years and this album is as good as it gets (which is pretty damn good) Perfect production, first class vocals (and I especially love it when Jay uses his falsetto) Favorite song right now is "Juliet Is Bleeding" but that will likely change with the next cd play...because ALL the songs are amazing. Check out the song samples here for further proof...
