Jay Kruse makes all of his own flutes and here with 'Reed Songs' explores several of them in solo performances that, while rooted in traditional forms, roam freely into new territory.

Lured away from a jazz bass career in the early 90's, Jay followed the call of the flute and hand drums. Having spent years learning to make these instruments he has begun to synthesize several distinct traditions into a unique blend.

Jay has been exploring the modal and rhythmic systems of one tradition on the instruments of another, and is discovering a new landscape begging to be explored. In the midst of this endeavor he paused to sit down with a few of his favorite flutes and record some simple improvisations-the kind that originally inspired him almost 20 years ago.
