notes
Our goal in doing this tribute to Jawbox was to include material representing the entire catalog, and also to have bands from all over the country included on the record. As a result, we managed to have at least two songs from each of the four Jawbox full-length releases. Having a broad representation resulted in what some will feel are obvious omissions (thought was even given to calling the record Un-Savory because of its omission!), but the overall end product shows the breadth and diversity of the Jawbox catalog.
A portion of the proceeds from this project is being contributed to the benefit of the Lupus Foundation of America.
Who's on the record:
New York based Retisonic features former members of Bluetip and Garden Variety. The band contributes "Cooling Card" from the For Your Own Special Sweetheart record. Retisonic records for Silverthree Records.
Arena Rock recording artist Pilot to Gunner weighs in with a B-side. "68" was originally on the Savory +3 EP and appears again on the My Scrapbook of Fatal Accidents compilation. Pilot to Gunner is from Brooklyn.
St. Louis based Riddle of Steel, who record on Ascetic Records, contributes "U-Trau" from the Sweetheart record.
Louisville punk mainstays Black Cross recorded "Tools and Chrome," which, as a 7-inch split-released by Dischord and DeSoto, was the original Jawbox release. "Tools and Chrome re-appears on Grippe. Black Cross records on Equal Vision Records.
Allen Epley's post-Shiner project, The Life and Times, contributes "Green Glass," another track from the Sweetheart record. The Life and Times is from Kansas City and is back with DeSoto Records.
Great Lake Wrecks, an ad-hoc group of Athens musicians, came together as a studio project to record "Empire of One" from the Jawbox record.
The Actual, an Eyeball Records band from Los Angeles, recorded "Static" from the Novelty record.
Also from Novelty is the Colossal contribution, "Spit-Bite." Colossal is from the Chicago area and records on Asian Man Records.
Bi-coastal band Actionslacks serves up a rendition of "Iodine" from Jawbox. Actionslacks records on Self-Starter Foundation.
Buffalo hardcore legends Snapcase was originally slated to be on the record, but the band called it quits before completing their track. Instead, the offshoot band Ourselves, which features 3/5 of Snapcase, makes their recording debut with "Breathe" from the Sweetheart record.
Traindodge, another Ascetic Records band, contributes "Tracking" from Novelty. Traindodge hail from Oklahoma City.
Dallas-based Red Animal War recorded "Cutoff" from Novelty. Previously on Deep Elm Records, Red Animal War has recently moved to Ice Planet Records.
After Two Sheds Music band Ashen disbanded in 2003, three former members of Ashen re-united in the Atlanta band Fate Heroic. Their first public release is "Consolation Prize" from Grippe.
Heros Severum is the lone representative from the Two Sheds roster. The Athens-based band recorded Sweetheart's "Whitney Walks" for the project.

Makes me want to listen to the real thing...
author: Ryan MixIt’s hard to say I loved this CD as much as I’ve loved anything J. Robbins has every written, but there are some tracks that are sufficiently different from the originals to make it worth the purchase. I call attention to Traindodge’s version of Tracking. Totally reverse from Jawbox’s version: Traindodge takes the chorus section (the part that rocks hard) and spins it around. Now it’s sparsely textured with harmonics and quasi spinning wine glasses. The bottom drops out and it’s like floating. Very cool and unexpected. Many of them, however, simply sound more or less like the Jawbox recordings (with a different voice) and show little to no imagination or interpretation. Perhaps this is testament to perfection- the lack of any need to change- the original. In any case, this is a must have in any Jawbox fan’s collection. At twelve bucks I think it’s worth it.
Great CD a worthy tribute
author: DaleI love Jawbox so i had to buy this out of interest. After a couple good listens i realy started to like this cd well worth the money spent. I'd say most of the songs very strong covers. only about 2 or 3 are just average covers "new band playing same song but not as well". The rest have a bit of a twist on the originals. The standout songs for me were "Static by The Actual" and "Iodine by Actionslacks"
