notes

She calls her music “Neo Classic Urban Soul” or “Post-Millennial Classic Urban Soul”. The sound combines her influences from an often forgotten time of music. For the MTV generation, artists like Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone, and Sarah Vaughn can be just names in a history book somewhere between the Harlem Renaissance and the Vietnam War. Jasmine Jones pays great tribute to the great aforementioned vocalists in her new genre of music, cleverly updating the sound for today's audience and mixing in her other influences from hip hop to soul music. As she prepares for her Nickel City debut album, "Battery Proper", all eyes are on her to see how this clever formula of “Post-Millennial Classic Urban Soul” meshes into a modern day musical classic.

Endowed with a rich, soulful and sonorous voice, Jasmine Jones' vocalizing ability is characterized as an intense spiritual expression. Her ability as a vocalist extends in her range, control and her ability to write all her own lyrics and arrangements. Much like a savvy painter using a assortment of colors to complete a work of art, Jasmine uses a diverse spectrum of sounds by cleverly blending hip hop, neo soul, pop, rock and classic R&B to depict her own distinctive sound.

The diversity in her music comes from her diverse upbringing. Living down south and up north, in the city and the suburbs, Jasmine has had the opportunity to be frequently exposed to various aspects of classical and contemporary music. Finding great inspiration in classic jazz singers such as Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan, Jasmine's journey as a vocal performer endeavors to explore new heights by pushing the envelope and closing the gap between classic jazz and contemporary R&B. Similarly, much more than a genuine appreciation for the successful vocalists, composers and songwriters that have preceded her, Jasmine strives to encapsulate each and every influence into her own artistic interpretation while exposing new generations of music listeners to the achievements of musicians of yesteryear.
