Getting car work can be stressful, but that hasn’t stopped Jasmine Jamillah from releasing Estimates (Live Cuts EP), bringing us six new songs from the 24-year old musician. The title song deals with automotive service costs and other songs wrestle issues of betrayal, loss, love and plants.
There’s an immediate and charged feel to this EP. Jasmine Jamillah wrote each song in the later half of 2006. And although this EP's style spans blues, folk rock and pop, Jamillah sings each song with a voice full of soul and unease. The result is an album with songs varying from raucous roomy blues to intimate, calming folk, but one unwearyingly tied together by a breathy soulful voice and urgent lyrics.
This EP follows Jasmine Jamillah's November 2006 self-released debut album, Overdue, but differs from that solo folk effort in that Estimates brings together Jasmine Jamillah’s band: blues guitarist Josh Rosaler, funk and soul bassist Matt Mannisto, New Orleans jazz pianist Peter Bierhorst and rock n' roll drummer Eric Newman.
Together the group rocks out live shows in New York City with emotional, volatile sets.
Tracks were recorded in Fall 2006, and cut from those live recording sessions at two New York City studios: the Batcave and Tribeca Studios. Tracks were mastered by Philip Golden at Stereotype Records.
