Jack Tung: The Life & Times of Chengwin (KOA 005)
All songs written, arranged, and performed by Jack Tung.
Jack Tung performs cinematic/post-hardcore instrumentals, solo and in real-time on electric guitar, drum machine, synthesizers, and sampler. His moody aesthetic is equally informed by the exhilarating and harsh thrash of his days in the Long Island hardcore scene, and by the atmospheric soundtracks absorbed during his lifelong cinephilia.
Inspired by film, Jack Tung strives to compose music that tells stories without needing to use words. For instance, Jack explains, "Like in Pulp Fiction, how every scene was scrambled... Scrambling parts up in a song could be another idea. You can find ideas in just about anything. There's no conventional way of writing."
In live performance, Jack Tung uses no pre-recorded parts and no backing tracks, save for the spare drum machine patterns which propel his arrangements. His precise execution and control of multiple layers of sound is a feat to witness.
