notes

"The Lost Coast" is the debut CD from Ivan Rosenberg. When such stats were still available, it was the 2nd best-reviewed CD on all of garageband.com. The Lost Coast is now out of print but available as a digital download. Check out Ivan's other CDs "Back to the Pasture," "Ashes and Coals," and "Clawhammer and Dobro" here at CD Baby.

Nine of the eleven tracks on The Lost Coast are original instrumentals, which feature fine pickers including John Lowell, Julie Elkins, Ben Winship, and Dave Thompson (Kane's River); Eric Uglum and Marshall Andrews (Lost Highway); Jason Mowery (Keith Urban Band); Janet Beazley and Mason Tuttle (Chris Stuart & Backcountry); and Chad Manning (The David Grisman Bluegrass Experience).

Dobro and banjo player Ivan Rosenberg has released 4 CDs of mostly-original instrumentals and an instructional DVD. Bluegrass Unlimited magazine wrote, "It is only a matter of time until Ivan Rosenberg becomes universally recognized as one of the more prolific masters of the resonator guitar," and Banjo Newsletter editor Donald Nitchie wrote that Ivan's latest CD Clawhammer and Dobro was one of the best instrumental recordings of the year.

Ivan currently plays select festivals and concerts with the Vancouver, BC-based alt. bluegrass band The Breakmen and with the old time/world music quartet Mighty Squirrel from Washington State. Ivan has also performed and/or recorded with many top musicians including Billy Cardine and Mary Lucey of The Biscuit Burners, Chris Stuart & Backcountry, Chad Manning, Hit & Run, Jake Schepps, Julie Elkins & David Thompson, Ben Winship, and Mike Grigoni.

Ivan's workshop experience includes The Sore Fingers Week bluegrass camp in the UK (2004), the British Columbia Bluegrass Workshop (2003-2007), the California Bluegrass Association music camp in California (2004, 2005), and Camp He Ho Ha in Edmonton, Alberta. This year's workshops include The Puget Sound Guitar Workshop and the BCBW.

Ivan’s original music has appeared in several film and television scores including Jerry Bruckheimer/Warner Brothers Films' Kangaroo Jack, HBO's Making Deadwood: The Show Behind the Show, Comedy Central's The Daily Show, The Oprah Winfrey Show, and High Plains Films' acclaimed documentary Libby, Montana.

  • The best bluegrass going !

This is the best bluegrass music that money can buy! I loaned this one to a good friend & she just has to have one too. I think I know what will be under her tree for Christmas!

  • Yee Haw!!!

Fucking awesome - this rocks! Great picking and one of the best things I've heard on garageband - real instruments, what a concept. That fiddle player burns and the banjo is mighty as is the guitar. I'll give it a 6.

  • amazing!

I'm totally dumbfounded -- this is the best thing I've ever heard on garageband. You're amazing! I see why people have been known to associate stringed instruments (esp. fiddle, but banjo too) with the devil -- they sure can bring out a lot of emotion. Excellent; really tight; never monotonous at all -- quite an achievement!

  • Acoustic fineness

These are very professional players. And they are killer.

  • Now this is some great bluegrass

Love this tune. I've been trying to think of some kind of constructive criticism and can't think of a thing. I love the guitar, love the fiddle, love the mandolin...what more can I say? The melody is catchy, the intro sets the mood, the progression of the song is excellent, the exit is smooth. Very nice!

  • A very nice CD with subtle, melodic playing from a promising new resonator guita
    author: Bluegrass Unlimited

. . . The rhythm is forceful and popping when need be, drifting when that is more appropriate. The transitions are smooth, and the solos are well-considered and stay close to the melody . . . . Among the nine original instrumentals and two vocal covers, several rise above the rest. The first is the opening cut, "Camp Rude Stumble," which sets the tone for much of the album with its somewhat relaxed-but-insistent mid-tempo bounce. Rosenberg's resonator work immediately reveals a mellow, woodier, percussive approach, one he sustains through most of the record. It reminded me of Junior Barber, not so much lick-wise but for the laid-back tone. Don't think that means he lacks drive. There is plenty. It's just subtle. Fiddler Jason Mowery contributes a nicely fluid solo. "Carbon County Coal," the third cut, takes the tempo up a notch. On this one, the resonator is a bit more metallic and demanding. This provides a nice contrast. Also adding a nice contrast is the fifth cut, "The Hardest Lesson," a lovely vocal featuring Julie Elkins of Kane's River. The other standout, "Lolo Trace," is also something of a contrast. Backed with the guitar of Eric Uglum, Rosenberg puts down his resonator and picks up the bass and clawhammer banjo for an all-too-brief piece that fades away as though the two moved together through the Lolo Pass in the Rockies and were disappearing down the other side. A record and musician that show great promise.

  • A grand assortment of tunes that leads the way for future Dobro players.

From the artwork on the CD cover to the music that follows, Ivan Rosenberg's debut Dobro CD is a grand assortment of mostly original material that follows none, but leads the way for future Dobro players. With a great variety of tunes from the opening "Camp Rude Stumble" to the finale "Dry Lagoon," along with a group of top-notch bluegrass musicians that lend their talents, The Lost Coast could easily wear out your CD player.

  • Delightful original bluegrass dobro music.
    author: Americana Connect.com

The Lost Coast is the debut album for a very talented bunch of West Coast musicians led by Ivan Rosenberg on his resophonic guitar. Also, nine of the eleven songs on this CD were written by Ivan - quite a talent! We think you will agree, this is a group we need to watch closely -- hopefully, they will cut another album in the very near future. Listen and see if you enjoy their music as much as we do -- as we play a little for you -- the title cut, "The Lost Coast", "The Hardest Lesson" with vocal by Julie Elkins and "Lolo Trace" a delightful number featuring Ivan Rosenberg on clawhammer banjo. Enjoy!

  • Enjoyable original dobro music with solid bluegrass back-up.

IR-CD-01 IVAN ROSENBERG "The Lost Coast" An enjoyable and pleasant 11-tune program that features the dobro playing of Rosenberg with solid Bluegrass backing by various pickers. Among these are the fine singer & banjoist Julie Elkins(now with Kane’s River), who contributes the vocal to THE HARDEST LESSON, perhaps the nicest cut on the album. Also heard here are Ben Winship, Eric Uglum and John Lowell. Most of the tunes are Rosenberg originals. Nice job on CARBON COUNTY COAL, EEL RIVER, CAMP RUDE STUMBLE, WILDWOOD RAMBLE, GOODBYE LIZA JANE, etc.
