Ingrid James - Australian Jazz Singer began her singing career recording backing vocals for a children's television program on the Channel 9 Network in Brisbane. Diversifying into television production, she co-produced television soundtracks such as the award-winning "Dragon's Tongue" and "Return to Singapore" for ABC-TV, directed music video clips, worked as a vocalist and music co-ordinator for children's television as well as TV director for ABC News and Current Affairs.
She left her full-time career in television to pursue her love of singing jazz and in 2002 completed post graduate
studies in Vocal Pedagogy (Jazz Voice) at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music. She now performs, teaches and has been running a monthly Jazz Singers' Jam Night for 4 years with Jazz Queensland (www.jazzqueensland.com)
Ingrid has been the recipient of 2 Queensland Music Industry Awards for both albums "Just Visiting" & "Lazy Afternoon" (Sunnie Awards for Best Jazz CD in Queensland).
Notable musician, arranger and vocalist, Tony Backhouse (Sydney) says "Ingrid James floats and swings effortlessly through the changes with a tone of honey...As well as great technique, there's an engaging warmth to her delivery like a close friend smiling at you". David Bentley, jazz icon and journalist from Brisbane says of her new CD "Essence" - "Thoughtful, inventive and, above all, swinging, Ingrid squeezes every line for nuance and meaning. The impeccable phrasing and accurate intonation come almost as a bonus".
Other industry comments: "Ingrid James' passionate vocals cut like musical light-sabres with each note - yet injected warmth and depth of meaning and pathos that only deep compassion can bring"...Noosa Jazz Festival 2003
"At a time when so many singers rely on cliched embellishment, it comes almost as a shock to hear lyrics delivered with directness and clarity"...Dave Bentley on her latest release "Essence".

Essence..a must for your jazz collection
author: carole hayes Radio PresenterThis is one of my favourite discs with my favourite track being "I Thought About You", followed closely by "All NIght Long". Ingrid James has been one of Australia's best kept secrets for too long and is now receiving the international recognition she truly deserves.
Wonderful entertainment. Total and complete mastery of her craft.
author: Paul MasonThis CD has some of my very favorite songs performed exactly as I had hoped based on the website samples. I Have not heard "Love for Sale" performed as well...ever...and my lady and I decided that "Funny Valentine" is once again one of our special songs.
Think about this........!!!!!
author: Stew TurnerThink about it....!!!!.... If Ingrid had been born in the same Era as Ella, Peggy, Dinah and all the rest of that great line-up she would have topped the list without any problem...Come on Australia....you've got a world class jazz singer here.....put her in the Hall of Fame then we can all boast about the great talent in Oz.... The Yanks had Ella.... The Poms had Cleo....... but the Best of All is that the Diggers have Ingrid......!!!
- author: Steve Robertson - Radio Presenter
"With so many singers putting out Cd's before they are genuinely ready to immortalise their work, it's refreshing to listen to Ingrid James and her sense of swing, her accuracy, her fresh approach, her maturity.....On Ingrid's new release ESSENCE (Newmarket CD), it's clear that she is a listener as well as performer...."
- author: John Shand - Sydney Morning Herald
"The songlist suggests yet another safe set of standards. The reality is much more about life on the edge, about chances taken & pulled off with panache. Brisbane's Ingrid James is a fearless & gifted jazz singer for whom the songs are there to be teased, flirted with & then milked for all their improvisational potential.."

Spellbinding, original and stunning
author: Cate ShawIngrid has been Brisbane's best kept secret for too long. She has just recently been launched nationally in Australia and now internationally. Visually stunning, and has many comparisons to the magnificent Ute Lemper. This cd shows Ingrid's original, warm, mellow and totally spellbinding style. I could listen to this cd 100 times and still wish to hear it another 100. I hope the world hears Ingrid's captivating voice and experience her performing which is unforgettable.
Singer finds jazz essence
author: Noel Mengel (Journalist, Courier-Mail 23/4/05)While jazz buffs will be familiar with standards from Cole Porter (Love for Sale), the Gershwins (But Not For Me) and Hart and Rogers (My Funny Valentine), they won't have heard them given such inventive treatments for some time....It's an album which stretch the ballad form thanks to James's sensual voice and the interplay of four of the finest players in Australian jazz....Look no further than a sizzling 10-minute interpretation of "I Thought About You", on which James's impeccable phrasing fits hand-in-glove with [Matt] Baker's extrapolations...(extracts from reviewer, Noel Mengel)
ingrid is a stylist in the true sense of jazz vocalists
author: brian fane noosa community radiothese songs are performed by musicians who give a fresh approach to great standards. each song has it's own individual style, from the minor key of i'm old fashioned to the sensitive cry of all night long. a must in your library

At a time when so many singers rely on cliched embellishment, it comes almost as a shock to hear lyrics delivered with directness and clarity. Ingrid James brings the listener to the inner essence. It's deja vu in reverse. You've probably heard these songs before - but never like this. Thoughtful, inventive and, above all, swinging, Ingrid squeezes every line for nuance and meaning. the impeccable phrasing and accurate intonation come almost as a bonus. This jazz for a new millennium - but don't just read about it. Put it on your CD deck and listen. You'll be glad you did.
- author: John Morrison
The nature of good jazz demands good chemistry between its performers and this recording is a fine example of how musicians, many of whom had only enjoyed chance meetings up to this point, can come together and create something truly wonderful. This music transcends the need to debate styles or influences and comes across as a purity of thought drawing in the listener....This music is a beautiful experience - savour it well and enjoy the "Essence" of a real alchemy.
