notes

"Reverie" is an intriguing mix of moody originals and carefully chosen standards. Inga's clear, strong voice paints a colorful landscape of soaring notes and earthy rhythms beautifully framed by Bill Peterson on piano, Jeff Denson on bass and Ronen Itzik on drums.

  • ummm....just about THE Most AWESOME VOICE I EVER HEARD!!!!!!
    author: Jegaan Faye

I'm a 20 year old freshmen vocal major here in Hawaii and was just searching for Jazz vocals because i had just become slightly accommodated in playing Jazz on the guitar and was unfamiliar with Jazz Vocals. Being more familiar with Pop and blues i came CDbaby to look for inspiration in the vocal area since I am just discovering my own vocal process. I came across Inga Sweargingen and The “Learning how to fly” album and when i heard the first Song “Learning how to fly/Fly me to the moon” I couldn't stop the tears streaming down my face. I kinda have this weakness for things that are Beautiful beyond comprehension and when i listen to Inga i get almost physically weak. The First time i heard scat it was in this Jazz club in honolulu and I really didn't care to much about it because the singer was just not melodic in anyway to be honest i thought if that was scatting is about (to be as off key and un-melodic as possible)I'd rather listen to sensible words that are out of tune than random off-key un-melodic jibberish. But when i heard Inga scat on the first track of Learning how to fly album i just about pissed my pants. No joke. Those 30 to 45 seconds of Inga scatting turned my view of scat from distant indifference into a burning passion and a desire to posses the ability to scat myself as a vocalist. Inga is just about the number 1 influence in my Jazz vocal construction and i am just absolutely blessed and thankful that such Beauty is sitting in my mp3 player waiting for me to press the play and repeat functions for hours at a time. Thank You Inga for your Beautiful Voice, Please keeping making the beautiful music you already make, i am truly awestruck by it. Jegaan Faye

  • Reverie
    author: Rhoda J. Stauffer

First heard Inga on Praire Home Companion and immediately went online to find out more about her. This CD is just wonderful -- Inga plays her voice like no instrumentalist I've heard....really, really, delightful and heavenly. A must listen for everyone!

Great voice, great tunes, relaxing. I have a bit of a hearing problem and wish that you would include the words with the CD

  • should be MANDATORY listening during the Holidays!
    author: charlie

such a MOOD lifter I've listened to her CDs for 2 weeks now loving every minute of it!

  • Inga Swearingen is the best.
    author: lyndsay

Reverie is perfect if you like jazz...then again, I don't usually choose to listen to jazz music for extended periods of time. So that must mean that this CD is perfect for everyone!! You must check it out!!!

  • Wow!
    author: Bill

Wow! What a voice - so pure, so swinging. Sometimes jazz people joke that someone is "either a singer or a musician." Well, Inga is both! Nothing but the highest praise for this CD.

  • I don't generally like solo jazz vocalists
    author: Colleen Keene

I really don't listen frequently to solo jazz artists. I'll listen once, then move on. But this album has been pretty much the only thing I've listened to ever since I got it a week ago. Great variety of styles, and Inga has a truly amazing gift for singing in a spiritually and emotionally moving way with complete rhythmic and pitch accuracy. Wow!

  • Outstanding Torch-Jazz style
    author: Stephen

Silky, hot, chocolate vocals, poured over cool, vanilla piano. Wonderful!

  • Smooth as silk! Mood lifter!
    author: Ruth Paige

Best Valentine's gift I ever received! Inga blends so beautifully with the Bill Peterson Trio, magic! So refreshing to listen to a singer and understand every word! The CD is a wonderful collection of smooth, happy, romantic somgs. This can brighten any day. I can't play it enough. I love her tribute to Bobby McFerrin! Awesome, smooth, clean, clear...a true gem for the ears, heart and soul!

  • Nice tunes and arrangements!
    author: george dawson

This cd is great! Well chosen pieces and great arrangements. Nice variety of music throughout. The original tunes are outstanding, especially "Reverie", and "Sunrise". My favorite standards on it are "My One and Only Love" and "Stompin at the Savoy". I am looking forward to more from this excellent group!

  • what a beautifully well-pitched and evenly spreading voice!
    author: Junia Vent

her voice makes my heart confused - wondering whether to melt or to jump for joy! as to the album I'd say: Promising, but not finished yet... the arrangements seem patchworks and the choice of songs hardly more than random.

  • I like it very much
    author: Michael Hehn

The most impressive thing is how she does JUST IN TIME. It is so up-tempo that there is no time to waver around a note and she goes directly from note to note with perfect pitch. And what an enjoyable sounding voice.

  • A tour de force.
    author: John B

Reverie is nothing short of brilliant. One of the best jazz albums I've ever heard. Inga's version of "Down by the Riverside" is sublime--pitch perfect and completely her own. Wow.

  • Yes, it's fab!
    author: Ed Goodstein

The other reviews are right :)! Fantastic, refreshing beautiful jazz. Innovative & fine playing by Peterson trio, & Inga channels ideas from folk, blues, Joni, & sounds a little too like Scots jazz singer Carole Kidd, & Tierney Sutton. Very good stuff-- esp. impressed by their novel 'bright hued' take on Joni's "Black Crow," 'perky' "Beautiful Love," & lovely "My One and Only Love." If you like pretty jazz singing, I think you'll love it.

  • Send your soul to cloud 9!
    author: Christian Clarno

It's too bad that there isn't an option for more than 5 stars! This is beautiful album from an amazing artist! The dexterity in Inga's voice is awe inspiring! Her previous album is stellar, this one is pure joy!!! You will not be disappointed.

  • I saw Inga and Bill play live at Hilton Head:
    author: SC native Jazz Lover

I saw vocalist Inga Swearingen and pianist Bill Peterson play last weekend at the Jazz Corner in Hilton Head. It was so moving that I bought their cd Reverie that night! The cd is every bit as great as their live performance. Such beautiful singing and awesome piano playing. I highly recommend this cd and also hearing them play live!

  • Like Janis Siegel and Fred Hersch
    author: Red Snapper

Long ago I used to love when Janis Siegel and Fred Hersch would get together and jam on "Meshugge in the Mornings" or whatever it was called. Once Janis got a few steps away from Manhattan Transfer and into a little radio recording booth to scat and frolic, she broke my heart with joy. Fred's piano made me smile and weep at once, and wish I could play like him. Their first album together, "Short Stories," was and is one of my most treasured possessions. This album makes me feel the same way. Inga's voice takes me back to a younger time when the world was new to me, and music offered the only chance to really understand it all. Backed by this stellar musical accompaniment, Inga's Reverie sends me off into a reverie of my own ... and breaks my heart in a very good way.

  • It's one of the best jazz CD's I have ever heard.
    author: Julie

I especially love the arrangement of Joni Mitchell's "Black Crow" and the catchy arrangement of "Down by the Riverside". Inga's voice is flawless and the trio sounds better than ever. Everyone should have this CD.

  • Bill Peterson, Jeff, and Ronen make the difference!
author: Bill Peterson's #1 Fan Next to his Mama

After listening to Inga's previous cd, it is obvious how much these world class musicians elevate her artistry and maturity. She has a fabulous voice and knows how to work it gracefully and playfully, never sounding like she's trying. But the real magic has to be in the Bill Peterson Trio. You need to buy this cd just for them!

  • You have to hear this CD.
    author: Todd Jones

Shah-ZAM! There is nothing Bill Peterson can't do on a piano. His lyrical and expressive playing is out of this world. and technique! oh my goodness - incredible technique! Inga and the rest of the group sound good, too. For your hard-earned dollars, the Reverie album is a no brainer

  • Fabulous collaboration
    author: Rhonda

And I thought the Bill Peterson trio took it away with their other CD (available at www.http://www.vinylfever.com/tallahassee/). This trio has graced Tallahassee for the past two years performing at several venues. They are magnificent, and Tally will miss them dearly. Perhaps the best jazz trio I've ever heard, and I've heard thousands play. Bill, Ronen, and Jeff sensitively play around, throughout, and within the mood of Inga's beautifully dancing voice. I highly recommend.

  • Inga as usual...
    author: Colin Dean

Hearing Inga's new CD is a refreshing twist on the activity listening itself. She has done done fantastic things with her other groups and this album is a wonderful testament to her abilities, as well as the abilities of her collabotators. Each listening reveals infinite and often subtle gems of taste, creativity, and especially musicanship. Bravo

  • sophisticated musicianship by richly talented players, but still completely acce
    author: Jerry Jennings

“Reverie” is the kind of recording I really like – one that I play over and over – because there’s just so much to enjoy and discover each time. It has a one-of-a-kind singer. It has a steaming trio of musicians that lay lush, hot grooves. And the song choices show a terrific range of tempos and moods as well as a great mix of jazz classics and originals. “Reverie” has got it all. But I thing I love the most is that "Reverie" feels like everyone is having FUN. There is a wonderful relaxed flow – whether the "reverie" is sad (Where Flamingos Fly), mysterious (Black Crow), playful (Stompin’ at the Savoy, Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most), energized (Just In Time), or romantic (My One and Only Love) – that just pulls you in. Inge Swearingen's voice is magical, crisp and easy, and the Bill Peterson trio fills the musical room with a sofa-like feeling of fullness and ease. There are so many tasty licks and colorful flourishes on this recording -- and its done so subtly and naturally. This is very sophisticated musicianship by richly talented players, but it’s still completely accessible. My favorite tune here is “Happy to Be,” an original Swearingen/Peterson song about a jazz singer who “can be the melody and bass, and weave a mood as fine as lace.” What better “Reverie” than a jazz singer singing about the transcendent magic of jazz itself? Actually, on second thought, my favorite has to be the love-song, “Sunrise” – it’s a gorgeous melody that floats on lovely piano work.

  • This is a great cd!
    author: rob

Reverie is a great cd! Very creative compositions and fine singing and playing. Swearingen's vocals are excellent and Bill Peterson is wonderful on piano! The trio of Peterson, Denson and Itzik provide a beautiful setting for Inga's charming sound. I highly recommend this cd!

  • Wow! Soothing and refreshing listening pleasures
author: christy devine * RIM student @ MTSU "Home of the Largest Recordi

Refreshing, soothing, and amazing were some to the 1st thoughts that came to mind after listening to this CD. Inga's vocal ability is awesome not to mention very enjoyable to my ears. I highly recommend this album and can't wait for her upcoming projects.

  • Inga is AWESOME!!!
    author: Jon Bodine

Inga puts a new twist on scat jazz. A refreshing voice, Swearingen takes an old genre of music to a new level with surprising ingenuity and dynamic. This album is a must-hear forall fans of jazz!

  • A good album!
    author: Eric P

Reverie is a step in the right direction for jazz artist Inga Swearingen. Her album "Reverie" is a good example of what jazz is today, and not what is used to be. Her songs are good for driving and relaxing. If you enjoy new jazz, Inga is an artist you shouldn't mis out on.

  • Spectacular
    author: Whitney

This music is classic sophistication mixed with new-style innovation. Her talent shines in each track on the album and captivates me more and more. The timeless jazz style is enriched in her new songs as well as the old. This is definitely and album for any collection. Astonishing work!

  • Spectacular!
    author: Jonathan

Inga is a natural talent seldom seen in today's world of music. With her unique signature scat vocals, her voice takes the listener by surprise with refreshing clarity and dynamics. Great album!

  • Not a bad album.
    author: Eric

As a jazz artist, Inga isn't too bad. As a jazz fan, her album wasn't exactly my cup of tea, but I've enjoyed it thoroughly, and look forward to her future releases.

  • Delightful, Uplifting and Spell-bound!
    author: Marie I. M

The artistry of pure and beautiful voice of Inga and highly sophisticated and sensitive arrangement of Bill Peterson Trio gives truly outstanding and deeply satisfying musical experience that even the world famous musicians can hardly achieve. Indeed, this is one of the best Jazz CDs that I know. It sure deserves to be one of the top selling CDs of Jazz this year.

  • outstanding as usual
    author: Ben

Inga is unique, innovative, and mesmerizing. Her first was fantastic as well. Beautiful CD.

  • Wonderful voice, instrumentals, and songs!
    author: Patty

A wonderful CD, with Inga Swearingen's pure, strong voice, and her wonderful take on some great songs. Each number has its own strengths, but I'd have to say my favorite is "Black Crow"-WOW! The musicians working with her are each incredibly talented and creative. I have listened to "Reverie" over and over again, and I still look forward to hearing it again.

  • author: David L. Smith

Simply brilliant. I love the way the tracks are arranged.Nice and slow then the next minute very upbeat.Sunrise maybe my favorite cut. Enjoyed hearing the old standards too. Keep up the wonderfull music Inga.

  • author: Wallace Burkett

Inga has a brilliant and beautiful voice. for someone so young, she also has a very nice jazz-feeling. the trio provides excellent backup. everyone is so young, with years ahead for improvment and our pleasure.

  • Stunning!
    author: Roger Standing

Inga just gets better and better -- Reverie is full of delights. New songs, old songs, it's fun, it's moving, it's simple, it's complex, it's ... well, just great to listen to over and over. If she doesn't become an international superstar there is no justice in the world. I bought the new CD and I'm in England, does that count as the next step?

  • Heard her on NPR 7/3/05...sensually captivating jazz voice!
    author: Bryan Kerner

First heard her on NPR's Praire Home Companion, I was so impressed I went to the NPR website for the first time to find out more. Danced around her website and her sound bites...just as impressed as the first introduction to her amazing rich jazzy voice. Will be getting her new CD for myself and have already recommended to others.

  • I cannot stop listening to this CD! - Brilliant musicianship and execution!
    author: Linda Vanasupa

There is a wonderful range of styles here. Inga's pieces, however, stand out for their sophistication and musical interest. Inga's vocals are impeccable. Each time you listen, you'll hear some tasty nuance that you missed before. Music lovers, this is a CD that you'll want to own!
