Inga revives the art of scat-singing, imbuing these jazz standards with a rare vitality

notes

Inga's new CD "Reverie" is now available on CD Baby. Please visit http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/inga2

Few musicians can express a sweetness and honesty in every word that is sung. Inga's vocal improvisation and stylistic breadth in the jazz tradition shine on her debut album, Learning How To Fly. Together with Trio 14 -- Mike Raynor, Ryan Garcia & Clint Iwanicha -- and Linda Vanasupa providing the subtle touches, Inga Swearingen embraces each song in a way all her own.

Inga has performed on NPR's A Prairie Home Companion over the years since 2003. Past shows can be heard via streaming audio on Prairie Home's website. The latest on November 30, 2007. Inga also appears in Prairie Home's 30th Anniversary DVD.

  • True Beauty
    author: Jegaan Faye

I'm a 20 year old freshmen vocal major here in Hawaii and was just searching for Jazz vocals because i had just become slightly accommodated in playing Jazz on the guitar and was unfamiliar with Jazz Vocals. Being more familiar with Pop and blues i came CDbaby to look for inspiration in the vocal area since I am just discovering my own vocal process. I came across Inga Sweargingen and The “Learning how to fly” album and when i heard the first Song “Learning how to fly/Fly me to the moon” I couldn't stop the tears streaming down my face. I kinda have this weakness for things that are Beautiful beyond comprehension and when i listen to Inga i get almost physically weak. The First time i heard scat it was in this Jazz club in honolulu and I really didn't care to much about it because the singer was just not melodic in anyway to be honest i thought if that was scatting is about (to be as off key and un-melodic as possible)I'd rather listen to sensible words that are out of tune than random off-key un-melodic jibberish. But when i heard Inga scat on the first track of Learning how to fly album i just about pissed my pants. No joke. Those 30 to 45 seconds of Inga scatting turned my view of scat from distant indifference into a burning passion and a desire to posses the ability to scat myself as a vocalist. Inga is just about the number 1 influence in my Jazz vocal construction and i am just absolutely blessed and thankful that such Beauty is sitting in my mp3 player waiting for me to press the play and repeat functions for hours at a time. Thank You Inga for your Beautiful Voice, Please keeping making the beautiful music you already make, i am truly awestruck by it. Jegaan Faye

  • Loved your voice. Your pitch is so remarkably perfect.
    author: George Beamer

Heard you on Prarie Home & was inspired to buy your Albums. You do remind an old guy of Ella F. Still, I liked the songs you did on the radio better than those on the recordings. Less jazzy, less scat, more baladic. Please record more cuts like that!

  • Distinct style, pleasing to me ear!!!
    author: Richard

I originally listened to Inga on Prarie Home Companion recently. When I heard her name on the radio in the car, could not decipher. So upon coming home, checked on the computer to find her name, and in doing so located CD Baby for ordering both of her CD's. Am pleased with Inga, and was impressed with the fast service with guality follow-through. Thanks to Inga Swearingen and CD Baby!

  • Maybe a new Ella Fitz
    author: Pat Marriott

Inga has a young voice but she can do anything she wants to with it. Her purity and intonation remind one of the young Ella Fitzgerald. She shows in Learning How to Fly that she can master the standards and make them all new.

  • author: Bill B

Another winner from Inga. Because of a bit of a hearing problem, would be nice to have the words to the songs included with the CD.

  • love it such a mood lifter!!!
    author: charlie

This CD has kept my mood happy, or with Christmas in the mix at least happiER such a great voice!

  • author: Austin Hawkns

I first heard Inga on Prairie Home Companion singing "The Saddest Noise" an Emily Dickinson poem superbly set to music by Richard Dworsky. I was bowled over by the sensative feeling in her voice and her impeccable diction. So it was good to find this CD on CDBaby and it does not dissapoint. Inga's rendering of Mood Indigo is pure velvet. lovely.

  • Inga's voice is out of this world. A pleasure.
    author: Jeanne

Love the CD. Easy listening. Inga's voice a pleasure.

  • Great CD
    author: Enrique (Spain)

I first got Inga's second CD and have recently purchased this first one. Good, very recomendable, the version of "the nearness of you" is superb, it reminds a little of Diane Reeves' version (in her CD "I remember")but is more balanced. If you have not heard Inga yet, you're missing some good stuff.

  • Nice Surprise
    author: Tina

Inga's voice is a treat. Buy this cd today. Now.

  • Inga Swearingen is the best!
    author: lyndsay

Learning to Fly is absolutely the best CD I've owned in quite a while. Even if you don't like jazz music, Inga Swearingen is so addictive, calming, soothing, wonderful...just the best. You must check this CD out!!

  • STAR BOUND? STAR ALREADY.
    author: Roger Whitcomb

It's rare to find a new star in jazz today, particularly jazz volcalists. Consider this CD your path to finding one. Just look at the number of 5 Star Reviews CDbaby buyers have enthusiastically submitted. Inga is no student pilot. it's more than safe to fly with this one. Up, up and away, Super Lady. Love your one take-off on Ricky Lee Jones, plus I understood every word. Hot stuff.

  • Chillout jazz
    author: lordh

Inga has a great jazz-trained voice and with this [sadly rather short] CD delivers a very atmospheric performance. This is great music to chillout to, to have a drink and ponder the reality of being [you catch my drift ;)]. Waiting for more!

  • Loved it. Top drawer.
    author: Mike Knapp

I buy a lot of independent music. I even have a special section for it in my collection. All my unsigned and small label artists are in the independent section. Every once in a while I am so blown away by the quality of the performance and the clarity of a recording that the disc graduates into the main genre section. This disc didn't even see the independent section, it went straight into the jazz section. Superb vocals, perfect pitch and no sliding into the notes either. The scatting is good enough to compare to the greats and when she holds a note it stays there. A B flat never becomes a B even when held for many seconds. Trio 14 do just what they need to do, they are strong and solid but not overly flashy. I like that. It is obvious they are talented and capable of flash, but they know where to draw the line. There isn't much worse than trying to listen to a singer over a complex drum beat or bass solo. This is a near perfect balance. The version of Caravan on this disc is now one of my favorite arrangements of the song. It has long been one of my most beloved standards but Inga and Trio 14 take it where it has never been before. Very innovative and captivating. Not often will a group mess with a standard to this degree, but in this instance it paid off big time. The recording is also astounding. I can feel the space of the room, and the tone of the instruments is dead on. A double bass is a tough nut to crack, but the engineer did a magnificent job on this instrument in particular. A wonderful sound-stage and immaculate imaging make this recording shine like few independent releases I have heard. Never do the instruments crowd each other or step on each others toes. I will look for Chris Robertson (the engineer) in the future. He is that good. Highly recommended. Excellent vocals, and musicianship and an audiophile grade recording...i'm longing for more.

  • If I'd been wearing socks; they'd have been knocked off.
    author: John Noel

Inga, I fell in love with your voice. The Muse speaks through you, sacrifice to it, you have the gift.

  • Great album!!
    author: Eric

This album is one of the best modern jazz albums I've heard in a long time. Inga's vocals are amazing and the instrumentation is top notch. I listen to it every chance I get. Buy this album!!

author: christy devine * RIM student from MTSU"Home of the largest recor

Refreshing, soothing, and amazing were some to the 1st thoughts that came to mind after listening to this CD. Inga's vocal ability is awesome not to mention very enjoyable to my ears. I highly recommend this album and can't wait for her upcoming projects.

  • Spectacular
    author: Whitney

This music is classic sophistication mixed with new-style innovation. Her talent shines in each track on the album and captivates me more and more. The timeless jazz style is enriched in her new songs as well as the old. This is definitely and album for any collection. Astonishing work!

  • TRULY INSPIRING, MUSICALLY MESMIRIZING
    author: CLAUDIA MB

This cd though short, encompasses so much. Inga's soul is on display for all to hear and what a wonderful way to show yourself. It is an honor to say that I have studied with such an amazing artist with such versatility and passion that is present in my favorite track " All blues". Great job Inga ..... and thanks for your help with Nature Boy

  • lively, haunting, mesmerizing voice, beautiful control...
    author: Jan McClure

First time I heard Inga, I was listening to Prairie Home Companion on a Saturday afternoon while puttering around the kitchen....she began singing "Summertime"....I remember rushing to turn up the volume...and stood very still throughout the rest of her turn at Gershwin's tune....her lovely voice prompted me to research her...and later purchased the 30th anniversary dvd of Prairie Home Companion...she was brilliant there...and enjoyed so much watching her. Inga, you were blessed with a gift...I hope you keep sharing it...love your cd as well....had it on today while cooking homecoming meal for my son...home from his high school graduation trip. It set the perfect mood...warmest regards and best wishes for many more successful cds.......

  • Great singer
    author: Erika Munoz

Great singer, really hooked on the first song-just making my way to the rest of the cd after a few weeks with that one. Hope to see more of her work in the future.

  • pleasantly surprised
    author: Robert

I saw Inga on the 30th anniversary DVD of Prarie Home Companion. Searched all over the internet until I found a CD here. What a voice. A "must have" for any lover of classic jazz.

  • Voice is amazing!
    author: Judy

Bought her CD as a Christmas present for my son. He told me she has the most amazing voice and he really enjoys listening to this artist.

  • What hasn't already been said?
    author: Dougnow

Wow...there's SO many reviews...all of them stellar...what more could possibly be said? Just this...be sure to recommend this CD to everyone you know, buy it for people and give as gifts (keep it clean, don't burn copies!), and continue to support great talent like Inga's so we can see more from her in the future! Thanks, Inga and CD Baby! :-)

  • Absolutely Amazing! Great jazz!
    author: Becky Keaton

Her voice is amazing. Old and new mixed perfectly! Wonderful improvisation!

  • Fantastic female jazz singer in an old school style, but with a voice that sound
    author: Kelly

Fantastic female jazz singer in an old school style, but with a voice that sounds fresh and new. I would recommend this to any fan of traditional jazz vocalists along the lines of Dinah Washington, Peggy Lee, Cleo Lane and Ella Fitzgerald.

  • Wonderous
    author: Deirdre

The production of the cd is good. And how the music and arrangements are is excellent. I am excited to find a good modern jazz artist. This cd shows off Inga's voice wonderfully.

  • Incredible voice...
    author: NP

A sleeper for sure. Her voice is fantastic and the CD is great!

  • Can't say enough
    author: FrissieCats

A friend saw her at Tanglewood on July 3, 2004 and we listened together to it on the 4th! After a few seconds, I was HOOKED! This has happened to me only once before! I ordered two CDs soon after and not only am I hooked but I've created another addict too! Inga is now my #1 Jazz favorite, sorry Ella, and I even bought another CD (Jim Conroy) because Inga sings with him on a few tracks! I hope this voice NEVER leaves my head! Another CD would be most welcomed when you find the time. Thank you Inga for sharing your gift and love with the world.

  • Wonderful stuff!
author: Hugh & Mary from PELICAN PLACE

We try to keep a supply of music "local" to the Tallahassee area in our store (PelicanPlace) and after hearing Inga at a local concert with Pam Laws (another 4 star lady) we just had to get this one. We loved it, our customers love it and you will too!

  • Absolutely great!
    author: Tina

From the first time I heard Inga Swearingen sing, I was looking for the CD. Now I found it and I love it. And so do all my friends. Hope there will soon be another one!!

  • A classic Jazz Singer, backed by a sweet little Combo
    author: scott troescher

Caught Inga and the Trio-14 at the SLO Mozart Festivities...surprised and Stunned by the quality of music they produced!! This album, though short, to me captures very well the variety of styles and moods Inga displayed that afternoon. Obviously an early effort here (the blend between vocalist and combo occasionally jarring) does not take away from the quality of the musicianship, their creativity...and the wonderful, pure tones of an already accomplished singer. Seemingly perfect pitch and plenty of emotion, make me happy to throw this one on whenever I want to Just Feel GOOD!!! Congratulations....and hurry up with the Next Great CD!!!

  • Perfect. Love it for any occasion.
    author: Benjamin Chute

This is one of those CDs that I play the most often, of which I am never bored. I'm always recommending it to everyone. Thank you Inga & crew.

  • Wonderful, warm and inviting. A pleasant addition to the rich heritage of jazz v
    author: Steve Anthony

Wonderful range of songs. I thoroughly enjoyed every song. On target. Smash debut!

  • intense musicality
    author: Steve Osburn

I'm from the classical music tradition (Bach etc), and hearing Inga's thoughtful, intense singing is like a distillation of the best of my tradition. The intensity of each moment of each song is very moving, and is an occasion for intense musical pleasure.

  • AMAZING
    author: Brenna Robertson

When you listen to this CD there will be no doubt in your mind that this woman is destined to be a great in the jazz field. Already the recipient of prestigious awards and performer in many exciting events (Prairie Home Companion, being one), she has only the clouds as her limit. With a pure and sultry tone, you will have no choice but to relax and wish your own vocal cords could produce the same sound. Inga, you are the best.

  • Short CD, but satisfies craving for Inga's sound
    author: feebie

As others have said, the CD is short, but it's good. While there are some artists where only their live music provides the needed "fix", this CD meets the need. Would still prefer a live performance, but am not disappointed by this CD (& bought one ot give as a gift.)

  • Hi
    author: Kelci Craig

Hi Inga, We miss you! How did you do in the jazz festival? I bet you did good. We just went to Santa Cruz but we couldnt get a hold of Britta. kelci

  • Future Jazz GREAT Singer ! ! ! !
    author: Chuck Robbins

Future Jazz GREAT Singer ! ! ! ! INGA's voice is unique. Her interpretation of the songs she sings is unique and wonderful ! ! ! ! And in a live performance, she is absolutely charming ! ! ! ! In her appearances on "A Prairie Home Companion," she stole the show. We are hearing her at the beginning and one can not imagine how she will evolve and become even more wonderful... but she will. The great artists are like that. THANK YOU INGA ! ! ! !

  • Excellent in all respects. Great voice, great band!
    author: Dan Turner

When I first heard Inga on PCH, her incredibly luscious tender voice brought tears to my eyes. So I looked for recordings and found this one. As spectacular as that July 3 PHC performance was, this CD does not disappoint. The band behind her is tight, full of excellent performances, and the arrangements are unique. Every tune bears many repeated listenings. A terrific CD. Thank you, Inga.

  • Inga is great on this CD, but her backup group could be better!
    author: Ann G.

In my opinion, Inga does an excellent job on this CD, but since I hate "atonal" jazz, I would have liked a less "atonal" backup group for her, especially for "Caravan" which they really destroyed. My very favorite number is "Mood Indigo" where they let Inga do her thing, and she does it so beautifully!

  • Great voice, good music, too short
    author: Jeff Forester

I first heard Inga live on NPR. I bought the CD expecting the same performance and was not disappointed. I agree with some of the comments that the CD is too short, but the music is first-rate. I would recommend to anyone who appreciates simple, clean jazz.

  • wonderful CD
    author: anna habicht

a great recording, looking forward to the next album

  • This gal will make it big! Looking forward to her next album.
    author: Bob

First heard her on PHC a few times...terrific! She stood out. I liked being able to understand every word. Beautiful phrasing and crystal claar vocalizing. I can close my eyes and hear Sarah Vauhn, Ella Fitzgerald and Nately Cole, all wrapped up into one!!

  • Awsome vocalist and beautiful music

I loved the melodies, the songs, the instruments and the musical arrangements and last but not least, the voice and the singing. The singer is wonderful. I don't get tired of listening to this CD.

  • Wonderful CD, Inga has a beautiful voice.
    author: Tom

This CD has wonderful interpretations of some Jazz standards. Inga's clear and expressive vocals make this a CD that will provide me years of enjoyment to come.

  • Impressively Pure
    author: J.R. Perez

This is an impressive example of collective natural talent, interesting compilation with creative renditions that feel very balanced and natural while highlighting Inga’s unique vocal talent.

  • First impression was a hit. Had to have her CD
    author: Phil

A quality CD from a quality artist. Ordered CD from CD Baby and it arrived in record time. We truly enjoy the rich warm vocals and have nearly worn it out already.

  • Clear, simple, jazzy
    author: Lee

The music is clear, simple, jazzy. Very nice!

  • Great CD-Inga is the real deal in Jazz vocalists
    author: Joel D.

Once in awhile a voice comes along that you connect with like Ella or Billie; right now it's Inga Swearingen for me. It may be a little early to put her in that class, but she's on her way. Her style goes down so easy and her voice is terrific. I first heard her when I went to see "The Prairie Home Companion" and she blew me away. I'd love to see her live again.

  • Bought it for a friend.....loves it!
    author: Martie Echito

A good friend of mine was raving about this new artist's CD he had heard a cut from on a public radio station, so I went to CDBaby to see if it was there......yes sir.....it was there....I ordered it......gave it to my friend, and he was so thrilled!! He loves it! He says Inga is one of the best new jazz artists around. Thanks!

  • Incredible vocals by Inga but the band needs more practice.
    author: Sidne

I found the band's back-up distracting and amateurish. Inga deserves a group that can keep out of her way but also provide a richness, to round out the cuts. The CD was made well, liked the quality of the sound. Would have liked a few more songs, too.

  • This vocalist makes me smile every time I hear her voice!
    author: Ray Winters

Excellent voice and instrumentation. Maybe a revival of some of the great old jazz sounds.

  • This is an excellent CD -- what a voice!
    author: Marcie

This is an excellent CD -- what a voice! Still waiting for the next one, Inga. We look forward to many more hours of happy listening.

  • It is the only CD is his new car.
    author: Susan Wygal

This was a present for my husband, who was wowed by Inga on the Prairie Home Companion shows. He listens to it constantly, and loves her versatility, the jazz musicians behind her, the choice of material.

  • Wonderful voice
    author: Kevin

Inga's voice has a quality all its own. She is krisp and clear yet a sultry sound in just the right spots. Her style is fantastic. Can't wait for more!!

  • Quality over Quantity
    author: Inga Fan

Everything on the cd was very well done. The vocals are beautiful and the ensemble is very solid, with a great balance between the two. The only knock on the cd is its length, but this cd is still a must for any jazz fan. Can't wait for the next one!

  • I bought the CD for my wife...she absolutely loves it!
    author: Michael D

I bought the CD for my wife after she heard Inga on the Prarie Home Companion show with Garrison Keilor. I listened to several of the songs and it's no wonder my wife loved it...great voice! The best part for me was ordering it online and getting it shipped to Italy was a breeze! Thanks CDbaby.

  • Thank you
    author: Kelci Craig

Thank you (spanxs), Inga, for signing my CD! Hope you have or had a good trip to Europe! And thank you Muladen for teaching me the trick on the diablo! HI Pink Boy, I miss you! Hi Meg can't wait to see you guys!Britta you have a very good voice you should take up singing.I had a fantasic time at live oak. Ilove you all, Stan Scarlett and Kelci

  • I love you Inga. No, really... I love you.
    author: Derek Gildea

The songs on this CD are fantastic... I espically like track 2, "Caravan." Inga has such a beautiful voice, and this CD lets you hear the full range of her ability.

  • One of my favorite contemporary jazz vocalists
    author: mike grandin

First heard Inga on "Prairie Home Companion", the San Luis Obispo show in 2003. My daughter is a singer and I collect CDs of female vocalists for her. (Of course, I hooked her with Ella.) We both love "Trio 14" and can't wait for the next album. Inga has a clean, unaffected style and beautiful voice with a good range that sounds like it's had some professional training. And she chooses interesting music to sing, not just the standards. No wonder she's been asked back (I missed it) on "Prairie Home"! (Just don't let Garrison sing with you.)

  • Great voice, great CD, a bit short - looking forward to the next one.
    author: Jim McDaniel

Great voice, great CD, a bit short - looking forward to the next one.

  • Amazing and ethereal voice

Great songs, wonderful scat. The songs are lively and reminiscent of early jazz.

  • Great! Sexy.
    author: Loretta

Realxing to listen to & sexy.

  • Wonderful! Terrific!
    author: Maggie Wood

I was enchanted by Inga Swearingen's voice when I heard her on Prairie Home Companion and this CD is even better. Great arrangements and well-suited to her voice and style. I could listen to this CD over and over and have already given a copy as a gift.

  • Like cool water. So pure. So refreshing. More complex than you'd expect.
    author: Brooks Gaston

After hearing Inga Swearingen on Prairie Home Companion, I went to CD Baby immediately and bought her album. Her voice is so wonderful. I recently spoke with a friend who saw her in the Northeast. He kept raving and raving about her.

  • Awesome!
    author: Brian

What can I say that hasn't already been said!

  • Very talented vocalist with an unique sound
    author: Sam Troyer
  • Thank you, darling Inga!
    author: mommy meg

This comment is about you, Inga, and the gift of music that you share. Thank you. Your voice is beautiful, your breath control is unbelievable, your improvisation is ourstanding and every song is filled with your entire being. You're enthusiastic, talented and humble all in the same breath. Thank you for being you and for making so many moments so VERY enjoyable. Can't wait... but I will.

  • Inga's voice flows over notes like water over smooth stones.
    author: George DiMundo

I first heard Inga live at the Prairie Home Companion show in San Luis Obispo and have heard her twice since on PHC. Her voice flows over notes like water over smooth stones. I eagerly anticipate the next CD.

  • Yow!
    author: saintjay

I immediately ordered this CD after hearing Inga's astounding performance on "A Prairie Home Companion". It's been playing virtually non-stop at my house since I received it a week ago! Can't wait to her next project.

  • Leaves you wanting more
    author: Cole Tuininga

Inga Swearingen first caught my attention with her a capella performance on NPR's Prairie Home Companion. I was completely mesmerized by the performance. When I got home, my first action was to search for a recording of hers on the web. I was pleased to find this one, but disappointed that that I couldn't find any others. I've since received and listened to the CD and found her voice and stylings to be well worth having purchased the CD. The only thing that held me back from giving this CD 5 stars instead of 4 was that the length of the CD was a little short. It left me yearning for more, but hoping to see future recordings of her's appear...

  • What a beautiful voice

I thought the CD was wonderful. Inga has a beautiful voice and is backed up by a great group of musicians. I am glad I purchased this CD and I am looking forward to hearing more.

  • fine jazz singer - more CDs please!
    author: robsryder

I first heard Inga Swearingen on Prarie Home Companion. I searched the web and purchased the CD. Inga was again on PHC on 5/29 - what a treat... The CD has lots of nice jazz songs from a great vocalist. NOTE to Inga... forget grad school - get back in the studio and cut some more CDs. Please!!!!

  • This cd is fantastic! It's not often that one finds such a well thought out arrangement and brilliant vocals.

  • Lovely!
    author: Greyegg

This woman has the most amazing voice. Like many others, I heard her on Prairie Home Companion and just had to have anytime access to that voice! It is absolutely lovely and will get a lot of play.

  • Quite a talent!

  • I'm having to train my own voice just to sing along!
author: Inspired to sing better now

What a pretty singing voice to listen to. I was so inspired that I actually bought Voice Lessons To Go (a voice lesson cd on this site). because I knew I had to improve what came out of my mouth while I tried to sing with Inga in my car.

  • Incredible!
    author: Nilda

I heard in Inga on Prarie Home Companion. I just had to do a search. Her voice is amazing. I'm getting the CD.

  • A Cut Above
    author: DanG

I first heard Inga at Montreux, and I am happy I have this CD to remember what she sounded like. When she sings, you believe she believes what she is singing. I hope she comes back to Europe soon.

  • BRILLIANT!!!!!!!
    author: beth curry

Butter. Just pure butter. Inga is amazing. I listen to tracks over and over and just fall over myself by her vocal stylings and her exquisite control and insight into the music. And what an instrument. So much passion, and flavor, and life. Truly stunning. Genius...yes, friggin Genuis!!!!!

I heard Inga sing on Prairie Home Companion and thought she was terrific. I had never heard of her before. I looked into how to acquire the album she had recorded...found it at CD Baby...it is as lovely as I expected it would be.

  • Music so flavorful, your mind can't master it.
    author: Sara

Let's put it this way...I bought the CD in December, and it's still in my CD player. Inga's music is so flavorful, your mind can't master it - which keeps you coming back for more.

  • inga is a jazztastic scat-ometer!!!!
    author: elizabeth kelsay

i love this cd! there is such a nice twist on some classics, and also some things i had never heard! this cd fits in great with my collection of only really really good jazz! hehehe

  • Great song selection!
    author: Sean Black

You have made an excellent CD Stephanie and company! If you plan on making another album you will have a repeat customer. This album seams to capture your moods and is properly named. Good luck and thank you for this wonderful album!

  • Isn't my teacher fabulous!?
    author: Dustin Hinzman

I can't believe that I'm studying with a celebrity! Inga has SO much talent - I'm glad she's sharing it with us at FSU!!! I love ya!

  • Sounds great on first listening - then just gets better
    author: Fraser (London)

This is such a sweet album - I was seduced by the opening track which I couldn't get out of my head for days after first hearing it. The album comprises a selection of really solid jazz standards with lovely arrangements that not only make the best of Inga's voice but keep the songs fresh. This is an album to listen to curled up on the sofa late at night and let the cares of the day fall away. Thanks Inga.

  • Interesting and creative
    author: N Dansie

Inga has a super range and lots of interesting colors to her voice. Creative interpretations on the classics . . . great musicians to back her up as well. Also enjoyed the other tunes included. Awesome!

  • I was Inga's mentor early on and I am proud!
    author: Brian Nutson

Inga has really shown her maturity on this record. I was her first voice teacher 10 years ago and we strictly focused on jazz. Even then I knew she had promise. This CD shows how much passion she has for jazz. Her hip-hop treatment of Caravan is very clever.

  • Talent on it's way up.
    author: B Crabb

Very Nice. It was fun to hear Inga sing Ricky Lee Jones' "Dat Der." And "Learning How to Fly" got stuck in my head for a couple of days. Was the album too short? Anything this good is too short. I would like to hear more of Inga's own compositions on future albums. And I hope to hear more, soon.

  • ...and Inga's second album is coming out WHEN???
    author: Anne Young, Dallas

I bought this unheard, and the purchase was totally based upon someone else's recommendation. I must report that Inga is a superlative singer and her timing is exquisite! That voice of hers just SOARS. Wow. I must also praise cdbaby.com - they were a true pleasure to buy from: responsive and clever and well-versed in their music. I'll certainly be purchasing more music from cdbaby.com in the future.

  • What a marvelous talent!
    author: P Bishop

What a terrific CD. Inga's voice is a beautiful instrument that is used to its full potential, backed up by thoughtful arrangements and talented musicians. My wife and I marvelled throughout at Inga's ease, pacing, dead-on pitch, timing and general artistry. We're looking forward to the next CD and seeing her live!

  • Ms. Swearingen is a wonderful talent who deserves more exposure.
    author: Skitchy

The CD is all that I'd hoped it would be, although I would actually have preferred less in the way of production values and more of Ms. Swearingen's unaccompanied voice (perhaps a more acoustic production style?). I first heard her on Prairie Home Companion, and was struck so much by her live performance that I actually went to the trouble of finding her name through a Google search and then locating the CD through this site.

  • I'm Hungry for More
    author: Ken Staley

Inga is sure to be a jazz star. A wonderful voice with a good band supporting her. My only regret is there were not enough songs on this CD. It leaves you wanting more.

  • Good Stuff!
    author: Skootaboy

Inga is smooth! I heard her on "A Prairie Home Companion". Her voice is magnificent. I love the CD. Wish she would record the songs she sang on APHC. Can't wait until she records more, and let's hope it's soon. A wonderful talent!

  • Stunning voice! Want more! She's a standout!

Wonderful sound. Also heard on PHC and had to have this artist in my collection. Hope she records more soon. Dat Dere.....I hear it in my sleep!!!!!

  • My better half heard it on PHC - LOVED it! I got 2 copies, for him & a friend

  • How nice! Keep them coming.
    author: D Burnett

Heard Inga on PHC in the car. Went straight to Google and did some Christmas shopping at CDBaby. All are pleased. I think the sound mix could be improved, but my only real disappointment is that there are no other CD's by this artist to purchase. I hope this is remedied soon.

  • Stand back, Ella. Inga´s in town.
    author: Carolina

The only flaw in the CD is that it´s too short! Inga Swearingen had me hooked at the first note. Music from another time, or maybe another universe, like the one where James Bond lives. Not since Ella Fitzgerald has there been this smooth a female jazz singer. She´s young, so we´ve all got high hopes for the future.

  • The CD is everything I expected.
    author: Ron Jones

I first heard this artist on "A Prarie Home Companion". She has a very relaxing voice & very entertaining music.

  • Delightful
    author: Colleen Garvey

This CD was recommended to me by a friend and I bought 2 copies on faith. I was not disappointed. The music was a delight to listen to and I look forward to future releases.

  • No words can convey Inga's talent. She must be heard
    author: Dr. John Catan

Ella Fitzgerald redivivus. Great CD. Everything Jazz should be. Fine production values. A singer beyond words. Inga must, I say, must get out another CD.

  • Silky smooth voice, prenatural scatting ability, and a solid band.
    author: xnbomb

Let the superlatives rain forth :-) Apparently Inga and her gang are familiar with the maxim of leaving them wanting more, because I really, really do. This disc is a tight little sampling of jazz styles that shows remarkable range and listening to it is an utter pleasure. If there is anything that can be said about it that is negative is that it is short and thus begs for subsequent releases. Please, please, please ...

  • Excellent rendition of Ella and jazz. Please record more!
    author: Lynne R

The selection of tunes is terrific and her backup band is fantastic. This should be just the start for this artist. Please keep the music coming and don't let this genre die out.

  • Wonderful voice, somewhat amateur recording.
    author: Robyn Daly

Heard Inga sing on PHC, found the CD at CDBaby, bought it. Love her voice. The accompaniment is OK but the sound mix is somewhat amateurish and both Inga's singing and some good instrumental work don't get to shine as they deserve. I hope if she and they get better known they'll get some good, professional production.

  • Swinging jazz vocals, fine jazz combo backup
    author: Joel Guthals

Captures much of the live excitement of Inga's PHC performance. Wonderful singing, nice arrangements, accomplished instrumental backup. More please!

  • This is an excellent CD. We are going to hear a lot about this singer. She is f

I absolutely love this singer. I heard her first on Prairie Home Companion and was immediately struck by her style. Couldn't wait to get her CD and I wasn't disappointed. Can't wait now for the next one.

  • what a great voice!

This CD blew me away. What an amazing voice for such a young person!

  • A great listen
    author: Jeff Chenoweth

A nice compilation. My first listen of her music and the only complaint I have is that the song list is too short!

  • Classic jazz at its best!
    author: Barbara Sutcliffe

If you're interested in hearing jazz as it should be sung, buy this CD. Classic jazz tunes done to perfection by an artist who is at the top of her game. Inga, please keep on singing and make another CD. Terrific!

  • Perfection!!!
    author: Deborah Deuss

I fell in love with Inga's voice the moment I heard it-both the tone quality and her style. Each song on this CD is like a perfect little package, the band complimenting her easy going style. I hope this is only the first of many CD's!

  • The next best thing to hearing and seeing her live.
    author: Steven Marx

Her voice bounces my brain around in my skull.

  • A voluptuous vista of vibrant vitality. Thank you Inga,Trio 14 and..Linda.
    author: Don Davis

What a delightfully produced juxtaposition and regal rendering of Standards and Jazz Greats:I was proud and privileged to dine with Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, Hoagy, Errol Garner, and then came the surprising finale, "Speak Low" (Kurt Weill-Ogden Nash); sweet dessert and pungent coffee.Delicious!

  • Inga Owned the Performing Art Center Stage
    author: David Wong

Wow....I heard Inga at the PAC in SLO when she sang on the Garrison Keillor's radio show. She is the next Ella F. I can't wait for her next CD in which I hope that she has more songs on it.

  • Great Stuff
    author: Doug Williams

Fun, exciting, moving, deep, colorful, smooth: Like a creamy roller coaster at sunset. Inga, please send us more!

  • The new jazz diva
    author: Pat Smith

I heard Inga on Prarie Home Companion and was blown away by her feel and singing. I have been a guitar player for 30 years and have rarely heard a singer as good. I think this CD is a nice debut and I look forward to more from her.

  • Be prepared to be blown away!
    author: Pat Zimmel

I have listened to this CD over and over and can't seem to get enough of Inga's incredible voice. I can only say that this CD will be treasured by all who buy it.

  • Rush out and buy it!
    author: Tom Kelsey

Heard Inga play on the aforementioned PHC show while on a long drive - rushed into the house and typed her name into Google and came to CD Baby - this CD is fantastic. She's a great jazz vocalist with solid backup - scat is her middle name - so get it while you can!

  • Not since Fitzgerald...
    author: Joan Eisenstodt

have I heard a female jazz singer I wanted to listen to over and over .. first heard Inga on Prairie Home Companion .. my jaw dropped at the sounds coming from her. Marvelous styling that draws you in.

  • wonderful, nuanced notes that twist your soul

Wonderful. Nuanced notes that twist in your soul; Inga's voice lingers and tantalizes. The accompaniment was sparse but rich and the talents shown through.

  • A wonderful jazz vocalist with tasty renditions

Ms. Swearingen's crisp, clear, and soulful sound is up there with Eva Cassidy and Diana Krall. The arrangements are terrific, as is the band behind her.

  • Sweltering and stirring.
    author: Alana Dennman

Moon Indigo is a mournful and quenchingly beautiful collision of sounds and longing. Beyond words. Inga is bound for great things... A masterpiece...

  • Sung with feeling beyond her years! Talented musician!
    author: megndon

This is a GREAT jazz CD. Lots of musical variety with soul. The vocals and accompaniment are woven together with ease and risk. Listen carefully to Clint on Bass in "Mood Indigo", there's more than just notes being played there. The arrangements are inviting and easy to listen to over and over especially "Learning to Fly" and "Caravan." Linda Vanasupa on keys is one to watch and look forward to hearing again. Great team, thanks for this CD, Inga. We look forward to the next one! Hurry, we're all waiting!

  • Great scatting, soulful singing, wonderful variety of style
    author: Colleen Keene

I fell in love with this CD the moment I heard the music. From her opening notes on the first track (and title song) "Learning How to Fly," Inga's beautiful voice makes the listener melt. She has stylistically matured and developed a lot from earlier recordings, and this CD excellently showcases as well the wide variety of timbres Inga's voice posesses. My favorite is Caravan, it's so sexy!! The band's playing is tight, particularly Linda Vanasupa on the keys. This has quickly become one of my favorite albums. If you love vocal jazz, you need this CD. My only complaint is that I wish there were a few more songs!
