notes
Nineteen year-old Imua Garza is best known musically as the driving force behind the Opihi Pickers, a local Hawaii music group known for their melodic hits, strong vocal harmonies and Garza's versatile ukulele playing.
Over the years, family and friends have tried to persuade Garza to produce a solo project but he has always modestly brushed it aside. Recently, with his musical vocabulary expanding and with much of it landing in an area outside of the island contemporary sound of the Opihi Pickers,
deciding to do a solo project finally made sense to him.
Dreamspeaking is a delightful collection of all original ukulele-based material composed, arranged, produced, engineered and performed by Garza. The music is sure to please both serious and casual music listeners alike.
The project features driving, up-tempo pieces such as Off the Beaten Path, highlighted by a very effective three octave ukulele part, and In the Nick of Time featuring some
nice melodic ukulele playing from Garza.
A couple of fun and playful pieces - Jinxy Finds the Catnip, named after a childhood pet cat, and A Day at the Fair, are highlights of the CD. On Jinxy Finds the Catnip, the modern sound of the lead synthesizer melody juxtaposed against the old-time strumming of the ukulele is especially entertaining.
Midnight Run is one of four experimental compositions in which Imua laid out the framework of the compositions before composing a single note. The resulting pieces have a motion picture soundtrack feel to them - very moody and atmospheric.
Garza’s growing maturity as a composer and an ukulele player are evident in Ukulele Blue, with its biting, bluesy solos and lazy, rolling ukulele/bass riffs, Blue Moon Rising, a dark and very beautiful composition, and Faith Everlasting, a beautiful musical expression of Garza’s faith in God.
The Dreamspeaking project is a mature musical statement from a very creative young man. Garza’s musical vision continues to grow and shine and there is no telling where it will lead him.

Nice upbeat ukulele CD
author: John O'ConnorThis musician belies his age. He certainly plays with an authority beyond his years. If I have any criticism at all, it is that he plays with the emphasis on speed that the young usually have. When he fully matures, and realizes that speed and technique should always be at the behest of the melody and music, he will be awesome. He is excellent now. Well worth the price. This is good music.
