notes
ILL Universal Entertainment was established in January of 1999 to bridge the increasing gap between HIP-HOP MUSIC and the MUSIC INDUSTRY and to change the MUSIC-MAKING BUSINESS back towards the BUSINESS OF MAKING MUSIC. The philosophy of ILL Universal Entertainment is best described by a quote taken from a 2001 interview with co-founder, The Threat's PyInfamous:
"The first three letters of ILL are always capitalized in ILL Universal or ILLuminati Records (previously the name of the recording division of ILL Universal Entertainment) because each letter is one of the three pillars we stand for. I is for Instrumentals - the hot beats that are a tradition in the South, but we also come with different type sounds to keep the game on its toes. L is for Life - this is our life. It's our entire being. It's what we love. It's why we are in the game. The last L is for lyricism, which is what we pride ourselves in the most, spitting hot lyrics. The L for life is between Instrumentals and Lyricism is closely connected to both, and everything that happens to us in life affects our beats and rhymes."
In the past decade, the urban music industry has shifted toward southern artists and their ability to produce club records with catchy hooks. ILL Universal aims to take the South to the forefront of hip-hop by revitalizing the lyrical skill present at the genesis of hip-hop and combining it with the southern flavor the entire country has already embraced. Attacking the dull complacency and monotony head-on, the artists from the ILL Universal regime create everything from thought-provoking social commentary to street anthems that every hip-hop fan in every hood can appreciate.
In 2005, ILL Universal Entertainment plans to continue expanding in all areas, collaborating with producers and artists from Maryland, Virginia, Michigan, California, Illinois, and various other locations across the country. The label is currently promoting its new project 4 The Block Mixtape Volume One which showcases the talents of The Threat - ILL Universal's premiere recording group - and Rashard Johnson - the newest R&B addition to ILL Universal's roster. So keep your ear to the streets and your eyes open for ILL Universal Entertainment!
