C A N Y O N

Well, my foolish friends, former side kicks and curious new listeners, I am Ibby. I toured With The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band for most of my adult life. I’ve had time to start two families, buy and remodel a great old house and write some cool songs. My youngest child, James, has helped me get this music recorded and mixed. His sisters seem to like it. It is my 60th birthday present to their estate. Thank you for supporting them.

HUMMINGBIRD – Jimmy Ibbotson

Meg is the Hummingbird. She is a fine artist from Cleveland who ran into me 15 years ago in Mexico. She dug my BS. And she was so pretty. A man would have been a fool not to fall in love with her. If only to get her to slow down. I have been un-successful at that. But, she was there in the studio in Woody Creek and Aspen for most of the basics for Canyon. She likes to watch me record bass and sing harmonies. Her favorite instrument is the High Strung J-185.

Richard Hathaway – Bass guitar

Ibby – J-100, kick drum, high-hat, vocals, Collings Mandolin, Flat-iron Bouzouki, Country Gentleman

Recoded and mixed by Jamie Rosenberg at Great Divide Studios, Aspen Colorado

HIGH HORSE / TELLURIDE - Jimmy Ibbotson

These songs were recorded by NGDB. One was a hit. But, they talk about a fantasy world, here in the mountains. A word where couples keep each other warm and share the joy of good company. Some of this happened to me as a road musician, believe it or not. I got to spend some cold nights with some great women.

Ibby-Everything

Recorded and mixed at Unami Studio and Day Spa, Woody Creek, Colorado

TRAIN IN THE CANYON- Ibby

This one was written for John Denver, after he recorded Ripplin’ Waters. Pretty much the same, pristine, Alpine environment as the previous two. Becky was one of the Blue Eyed Buffalo Girls who worked in the kitchen at Seamus O’Toole’s Roadhouse saloon. One winter, she bought a log cabin, built by the family that sold gas at Grizzly Creek in Glenwood Canyon. The mighty Colorado River flowed toward The Sea of Cortez, out the window over the bed, a quarter mile, below. Pam and Kathy Sweeny and Bridget all worked with my band, Telluride, bringing a unique mountain experience to skiers and junkies, alike.

HELLO, I AM YOUR HEART- Dennis Linde

He wrote Callin’ Baton Rouge for New Grass Revival and Garth. He wrote Burnin’ Love for Elvis. He wrote this for me. Ha. I wish I had met him. Not very many people did. But, he wrote and produced a lot of great demos. He must have done them for himself.

Ibby – All voices and instruments, except Randy Utterbach on fiddle

Recorded at Tree Studios in Norcross, Georgia. Mixed at Unami

LET IT GO – Ibby

I was staying at Club del Mar, on Jaco Beach in Costa Rica, when a big, converted trawler anchored outside the breaking waves. I paddled out and made friends with the skipper. He told me all about his GPS Navigational deal. I imagined what a cruise might be like.

Ibby- Everything

Recorded and mixed at Unami

COLLEGE D-18 – Ibby

New song. Praise God. Good to have something that hasn’t gone out of style or been replaced by a new, digital version.

Ibby- D-18 and bass

Recorded and mixed at Unami

BECKY AND THE BABY - Ibby

Different Becky, by the way. I just liked the name and used it after seeing a bomb go off on CNN. A pretty little news bunny help a microphone and said, “This tree-lined, suburban street has been the scene of anti-abortion protest. I’m on the steps of the Women’s Health Clinic . . . .”

Boom! She dropped to her knees but kept talking. The camera man dropped, too. But, he kept the fallen news bunny in the frame. Once again, I reverted to fantasy to create a scenario in which they all lived happily ever after. The ironic part of the story is that I entertain at the prison, where the convicted bomber will live out his days. I don’t sing the song. They make video tapes of my performances. I wouldn’t want him to think that he was a hero.

Ibby- everything
Recorded and mixed at Unami.

MAP TO HEAVEN – Ibby

“Sing unto the Lord, a new song.” The best song-writer of all time wrote this line, over and over in his Psalms. The same desert, where David and Solomon sung is now the site of a bad war. I may have written this for James. It could have been written by my dad for me. It could have been written by the 41st President of the USA for his son, our current President. Merry Christmas.

Ibby- all voices and instruments

Recorded and mixed at Unami

MRS. HISS’ HOUSE - -Ibby

This little house sits on our road, about half-way to the tavern from the day spa / studio. Baby was the Dallas Adulteress; a geisha who inspired me to write Shower Call, One Sure Honest Line, Baby Tonight and the Luncheonette Trilogy. I saw her, the other day. She has a copy of this. Hope she likes it. Hope you like it. The little home will be bull-dozed, soon. It sits on some very valuable land. It isn’t a bad thing. Once it had a new sink. Once, the toilet didn’t run. Once the windows kept out the cold. Another young mother will get to raise her kids, there.

Bryan Savage – flute
Randy Utterbach – fiddle
Michael Jude – bass
Steve Johnson – banjo

Recorded at Great Divide and mixed

SAD OLD MAN – Jimmy Ibbotson and Michael Cleverly

Cleverly is a fine artist who lives on the ranch, up the road. He and I shared a column in The Aspen Times, years ago. His paintings and photos grace my walls. Meg and he are close, now. He used to take care of Bo, my dog, when I was in Mexico or on the road with NGDB and / or Mac. Except for the wood carver, next to the tavern, he is the best artist on the road. There are many. I consider myself one. Cleverly may feel the same way.

Cleverly was one of Hunter S. Thompson’s only friends at the end of Doc’s life. Like many of his old friends, I had been 86ed from his kitchen. But, Cleverly was there to answer his late night phone calls and come to Owl Farm for games or rants or to read the Doc’s new pages, out loud.

Bryan Savage – flute
Randy Utterbach – fiddle
Ibby- vocals, piano bass, everything else

Recorded at Great Divide, mixed at Unami

STARTING LINE – Brother Paul Thorn extra verse, Ibby

I love Paul’s songs. Steve Bennett, A&R director at Unami, turned me on to my favorite writer. He and his brother Bruce travel all over to sit in his audience. We share CDs and DVDs. Mr. Thorn is a kid, but went 6 rounds with Roberto Duran. He has been the terror of the trailer park, if only in his mind. His experience as a road musician is enough like mine that I had to break into his song.

Bryan Savage – sax
Randy Utterbach – fiddle
Michael Jude – Bass
Ibby – everything else

Recorded at Great Divide and mixed at Unami

Wyatt Oates – engineering, mixing, council to the brain-dead in the mountains

Special thanks to Billy “Bear” Vaughn and Paul Diaz from Tree Sound Studios, in Norcross Georgia. Without them, I wouldn’t have Pro-Tools or the belief that I can, one day, make good sounding records.

Special thanks to Jamie, Meg, James, Billy, Wyatt, and Paul for putting up with me. Thanks to Larry Lefner, the wood carver, who lets me sand his work. Thanks to Andy Hall for not killing me. The owners and employees of The Woody Creek Tavern hold a special place in my heart and stomach.

I just listened to a NGDB CD after not hearing the music for a while. And, while only Jeff could sing Mr. Bonjangles I realized it was your voice that I love to listen to. Thanks for creating such a great CD.

I saw Jimmy perform last year and he did a few songs from this CD...I had been waiting for it to come out ever since. I absolutely love it, particularly L.A. Freeway and Hummingbird(beatutiful song that I was waiting and waiting and waiting to hear again...you will too, after you've heard it once.)
