notes

The Howland/Imboden Project is an all instrumental jazz/rock/fusion project with a strong emphasis on songs and a good dose of improvisation as well.

The project features Keith Howland on guitar and Tris Imboden on drums, both current members of the legendary band Chicago.

Also featured on the disc are fellow Chicago bandmates Robert Lamm, Lee Loughnane, James Pankow, Bill Champlin, and Jason Scheff as well as Jeff Babko (keys, Simon Phillips), Jimmy Earl (bass, Chick Corea, Robben Ford), David Garfield (keys, Los Lobotomys), Lance Morrison (bass, Don Henley), Kevin Ricard (percussion, Stevie Wonder), Mark Russo (sax, The Yellowjackets, Doobie Bros.), Steve Weingart (keys, Dave Weckl Band), and Horace Williamson (keys, Sam I Am).

The project was great fun to make as there were no preconcieved notions for a direction or any restrictions.

The disc has 60 minutes of music ranging from straight ahead rock to latin tinged jazz.

We did not set out to make a certain type of record, we just set out to make ourselves happy making music.

Hopefully you will enjoy listening to it as much as we enjoyed making it!

  • Great CD, awesome tunes
    author: Mak

This is a great CD! It has a little bit of everything, from jazzy funk to good ol' rock'n'roll. If you are a fan of great guitar and drum playing (and who isn't?) and enjoy jazz, rock or latin music in any of their many forms, you will enjoy this CD.

  • Captivating

This is a tremendous CD! All the great music and variations are just wonderful. Parts bring me back to the old days of Chicago, especially song #9 where Jimmy Pankow is at his best. Chicago should incorporate these songs on their next tour, it would be very deserving to Keith and Tris. This is a must have CD for all Chicago fans. If you haven't heard it, you don't know what you're missing.

  • A jazz fusion CD that rocks!
    author: Sharon

Two of the members of Chicago have teamed up to present us with a rare gift. This beautifully done CD of jazz fusion rocks the jazz world! Keith Howland and Tris Imboden have teamed up to reawaken Chicago fans and the rest of the music world to the art of jazz. Along the way they have gotten the support of Jason Scheff, Robert Lamm, Bill Champlin, James Pankow, and Lee Loughnane - their Chicago buds, and also Lance Morrison, Steve Weingart just to name a few. This is MUST HAVE CD! It's GREAT! Go out and add it to your collection, NOW!!!!!

  • Jazz Fusion platter, cooked to perfection and beautifully presented.

I had heard some of the tracks on radio so knew to some extent what to expect, but when I put it on the CD player, I was pleasantly assailed with a varying array of sounds from laid back grooves, to in-your-face rythyms and hooks, and of course some great drumming and some explosive blistering guitar leads - including some quite rocky tracks. A really nice mix for a fusion fan like me. I highly recommend this album.

  • Nice change of pace for these guys
    author: Jeff Hendricks

I highly recommend this CD. It really gives Keith Howland and Tris Imboden a chance to show their considerable talent. Those of us who have seen them in concert with Chicago know that these two are quite good at what they do. Unfortunately, given the band's relative lack of studio recordings in recent years, they haven't had much chance to show off their skills. This CD gives ample opportunity for Howland and Imboden to perform with most of their band mates, as well as several other talented musicians. Highlights for me were the first three tracks, as well as the two final cuts, but all the tunes are very listenable.

  • BUY IT
    author: alex

if you want to hear what these two members of Chicago are capable of...BUY IT

  • Superb cd something for all tastes
    author: Lee

It,s great to hear real musicians at last, and not drum machines and sequencers for a change.A dying breed of music thats not manufactured by money grabbing music industry exec,s.When,s the next cd out?

  • Great album hope to see more of the same

A great album full of different styles that is perfect for any Chicago fan.

  • Another fine effort from quality musicians
    author: Steve Gledhill, Naperville, IL

These are outstanding musicians that write solid material and deliver the goods. I love instrumental music that's both intelligent and powerful, and that's what we have here. According to my tastes, the only thing that keeps this CD from a 5-star rating is that synthesizers should be extinct by now and it's utilized regretably for solos on this project. I'd love to see this band go with an organic approach and replace the 80's-like synthesizer with piano and B3 organ fills and solos.

  • Great CD, we love it! We've been listening to it non-stop.

  • SOLID TUNES; GREAT "FEEL"......LOVE IT!
    author: Theresa Blackwell

This CD was published a couple years before I purchased it. I'm kicking myself for not purchasing this one sooner. Tris Imboden is a massively talented drummer---groove all day long; and Keith Howland is absolutely mind-bending with some of the riffs and licks he uses over the course of this CD. I have 2 tunes left to hear; but two songs on this disc that had me knocked out -absolutely floored; are "Don't Wake the Baby" and "Cement Mixer". If you want sizzling drums and smokin' guitar, with some very well driven horn riffs over an anchor of keyboards, get this one; Robert Lamm, Bill Champlin, Lee Loughnane....Pankow; they all tear it up. Chicago fans who have wondered where this band has been, musically, pick up this record; you'll hear that the group's members (many of whom guested on the album) can STILL 'throw down'.

  • Wonderful!!

  • Incredible CTA Flavored Instrumental Jazz/Rock
    author: Barry Tate-Contemporary Media Introspectives

This was a hell of a shock in quality and musicianship. These guys just tear it up. Kieth Howland and Tris Imboden I have seen live with Chicago in LA and this album just blew me away. Very fresh. Van Halen style riffs with knockout drumming, bass and keys and perculating percussion. Love the Hammond B3! Like a reconfigured CTA with rhythm up front and horn solos sprinkled throughout. One track reminded me of Pink Floyd's Dark Side Of The Moon-and that is a classic. I've begun spreading the word-do NOT sleep on this impressive project! I cannot stop playing this killer album.

  • Wow! Listen To This!!!
    author: Oliver Knieps

What first strikes you when listening to the CD is the overwhelming sound. Absolutely great. Second, and a bit more important: The Music. :-) And, yes, hand on my heart: Tris and Keith really blew your mind! Cool, fast tempo rock songs, laid back jazz grooves and funky hot latin styles. This album doest it all and does it very, very good! Cool! Give them a try, even when you listened to Karzima or Dave Weckl Band, here we have a true competitor! Excellent!

  • Awesome, fresh, upbeat, shows off great talent!
    author: Walt Flesner

Awesome CD, even better than I expected! The music was fresh, original, exciting, upbeat, and shows off the great talents of Keith and Tris that seem to be overlooked when with the Chicago format. I would love to hear more!

  • A MUST FOR ANY COLLECTION !
    author: Jerry Andries

Keith and Tris Great Job ! I like the different styles in influences. You give Los Lobotomys and Karizma some competition.

  • Innovative, jazzy and edgy!
    author: Jeff Plackemeier

Innovative and jazzy with an edge! Nice background music in the Chicago VII vein. Almost an ersatz Chicago album in its own right due to the participation of nearly every current member.

  • A modern offering in the spirit of CTA?
    author: Jon Krenz

Anyone who appreciates the early Chicago would certainly appreciate this offering from the two newest members in the band. Though the music is modern in style, it is reminiscent of the instrumental jams on CTA. Particularly good are the two tracks to which Robert Lamm contributed, 'Theme From a Love Dream' and 'Inching Towards...?' But to imply the album's merit lies only in it's relation to Chicago would be unfair. This is simply good instrumental music. An excellent extra-curricular effort on the part of Howland and Imboden.

  • Two members of Chicago team up to reveal just how amazing a mixture of jazz and
    author: Pamela Rooney

A CD Baby best-seller for several months, this side project of Keith Howland (guitar) and Tris Imboden (drums) of the band Chicago is a scorching masterpiece based in guitar and drums. Riding the waves of jazz/rock fusion over bluesy, guitar-riffy songs and down through altered Santana-like latin rock numbers, they stay the course, maintaining a stunning marriage between jazz and rock. Joining them are some Chicago bandmates as well as an almost ridiculous number of other guest stars (a member of the Yellowjackets, and members of the back up bands of Chick Corea and Stevie Wonder among others). Yow.

  • Unrestrained -Unincumbered-Unrelenting Rock and Roll
    author: Scott Green

HIP inbodies what I wish the entire band would participate in....straight ahead honest to God effort with real results! Good music will sell itself...HIP is great music! Howland screams to be heard and Imboden rolls from one cut to the next with seamless effort. How about a HIP Jam at the next CHICAGO SHOW?!
