Album notes from When I Fall In Love...

It's been a genuine pleasure to work with Melissa on this (her first) CD. Her excitement and enthusiasm for the music is infectious, and serves as a refreshing reminder that jazz can speak across generations. Melissa's energy and intensity are equaled only by her talent and emotional sensitivity to music generally sung by singers both older and more world-wise. Melissa complained once that she sounds "young" (she is only 18); her innocence seems almost at odds with the emotional complexity that characterizes jazz. Yet the remarkable ease with which she handles this complexity, coupled with her youth, enable her to present this challenging material in a fresh and unique manner.

Melissa's personal email address is "musical muse...", and that is an apt description of her. Not only does she bring a dedication and enthusiasm to her singing and flute playing, she inspires those around her as well. We feel this album is a gestalt -- it exceeds the sum of its parts -- and Melissa's youthful vitality has contributed greatly to this. This album is even more, though, a symbiosis -- we have all drawn inspiration from each other. Frank's masterful piano stylings set the tone for the entire album; Rich's tasteful flugelhorn complimenting Melissa's vocals, and his exciting instrumental arrangements, season this CD to perfection. And Paul's years of experience in his basement studio have allowed him to weave everything together seamlessly.

We feel that Melissa has a bright future ahead of her, and we trust you, the listener, will soon agree.

"In every person's life there is one thing they truly love. In my life that has always been music. Music holds magic for me that has never been equaled by any other activity. I want to teach others how to love music and how to respect it. Music is more than just notes on a page; it is an art form that tells the story of life. I want everyone to feel the power and the pull music can have on life, if only it is allowed."

Bios...

Melissa Casper, a native of Albion, NE, has just completed her first semester at Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln, NE, majoring in music.

Frank Hosford resides in Albion, NE, and has played jazz piano and composed for over 60 years.

Rich Hughes teaches elementary band in Grand Island, NE, and has played in bands for over 40 years on both trumpet and guitar.

Paul Hosford is a composer, multi-instrumentalist, producer and engineer. He operates Painted Heart Music, LLC, and the Lizard's Lair recording studio with his wife, Lori,
from their home in Albion, NE.

  • Outrageously rebellious!

    What are the youth of today coming to? 18-year-old girls are supposed to be piercing their navels and imitating Brittany Spears, not recording top-shelf jazz accompanied by obvious masters! Ms. Casper is one class act! Watch out world, this sort of thing could make good music fashionable again. Everybody needs to hear this! Just be careful--once you hear it, you'll find yourself listening again and again.
