Everybody loves a parade! Especially when it is a Hootenanny Hit Parade! But this isn't any ordinary march down Main Street. This is a compilation of 16 exceptional acoustic performances from 15 exceptional performers, most of whom live in the San Francisco Bay Area. In case you haven't noticed, many wonderful unsigned, under-the radar folk and acoustic artists make the Bay Area their home. There are so many, in fact, that we started a monthly free music show called Hootenanny Night (www.sfhootenanny.com). For the past 4 years, on the second Saturday night of each month, we've hosted hundreds of the best local singers and performers on our little stage in the Lower Haight in SF. This is an all free, all volunteer show prompted by our love for homemade acoustic music.
On Hootenanny Hit Parade, Vol. 1, we've collected some of our favorite studio recordings from some of our favorite Hootenanny performers. The songs here defy easy classification. Some are not-so-often heard folk nuggets such as SEVEN DAFFODILLS and IT'S A PLEASURE TO KNOW YOU. Others are immediately memorable originals, such as TIJUANA WALTZ, FALL AWAY and HARD BEING RIGHT. Some performers here are names immediately familiar to Bay Area folk music lovers, such as Faith Petric, Tony Marcus & Patrice Haan, and Sylvia Herold. Others are up and coming performers starting to make a name for themselves in clubs and coffee houses around the Bay Area (and beyond!), such as Sam Misner & Megan Smith, AJ Roach, and Claudia Russell.
For all its disparate sources, Hootenanny Hit Parade Vol. 1 hangs together remarkably well. As one fan said, "It is stunning how good this is! The singing and songs are so good. I just wasn't prepared!" Hearing is believing! Listen to a few yourself and see if you don't agree. All songs were donated by the artists for the benefit of the Hootenanny Night monthly shows. Most of the performers here have their own collections available on CD Baby. If you like what you hear, make sure to support the artists that made this rare production possible.
