notes
Founded in 1994, the Homespun Ceilidh Band (pronounced Kay-Lee) has performed at numerous Scottish games (Northern Virginia, Southern Maryland, Anne Arundel, Connecticut), folk festivals (Washington Folk Festival, Potomac Celtic Festival), pubs (Olde Towne Tavern, Frederick Celtic Club), concerts (Greenbelt Arts Center, Virginia Beach, Ocean Pines), weddings, and private parties, throughout the Mid-Atlantic United States. We specialize in toe-tapping "get up and dance" ceilidh music.
With a strong core of Scottish tunes, as well as Irish, Manx, Welsh, Breton, and Cape Breton tunes, we stand ready to provide a unique experience to any celebration, and with the release of Spinning Reels, we can now bring our energetic sound to your living room.
The Homespun Ceilidh Band is a very full sounding band. Fiddles, whistles, flutes, bouzouki, a viola de gamba, a hammered dulcimer, guitars, cittern, and two bodhrans provide a distinctive Celtic sound. We can play music both lively and sweet, and we love playing it. Marches, strathspeys, reels, jigs, polkas, and gentle airs make their way into our sets.
One of our drummers is also an Irish step-dancer, and she usually dances at least once during a Homespun Ceilidh Band set.
For readers unfamiliar with Gaelic, or with Celtic music, the word "ceilidh" in the band's name is pronounced "KAY- lee", and it's a Gaelic word meaning a type of house party / community gathering with music, dancing, storytelling, etc. "Ceilidh" is the Scottish spelling; the same word in Irish Gaelic is "Ceili", pronounced the same way.
The music on Spinning Reels comes from Scotland, Ireland, and Canada -- infectious tunes that make you want to dance, stomp your feet, clap and cheer 'til you can't cheer any more. The rowdier the tune, the more we like it! We hope that you will enjoy this music as much as we have enjoyed playing it over the years.

Best I've heard!
author: Chris in IndianaI've loved Celtic music for a long time but had a hard time finding the lively type I like all in one CD. The Homespun Ceilidh Band: Spinning Reels takes the cake! It's the best I have heard and I plan to pass it on to others.
I'm converted to Celtic
author: Sharon CasonI found this CD while looking for a band to play at my daughter's wedding as her fiance is big into Celtic music. Now I'm converted too! This is very high energy, toe-tapping music and it's started me down a whole new road of musical enjoyment.
