notes
Singer/songwriter Helen Jayne grew up in South Wales, where her natural singing talent and musical ability were encouraged from an early age.
In 1989, Helen moved to Wokingham, Berkshire, where she met local musician Doug McKellar and formed a pop/folk duo called The Promise. The first song they wrote together, "My Love is Strong", was translated into Welsh and performed by Helen on Welsh television. Following the success of this performance, she was invited back in 1990 and 1991 to sing a further two of her own songs.
In 1991, The Promise folded and Helen went solo. As her song-writing skills developed, Helen gained airplay on regional radio stations across the country. She also had success in the International Demo Charts, reaching number three with a pop-ballad called "Reality". By now she was beginning to attract a following and was playing more prominent gigs, including an open-air concert at Alton Towers.
Helen signed her first professional recording contract in 1994, and 1995 saw the world-wide release of her self-penned debut album Safe. Recorded in Nashville, USA, with top session musicians, this gospel-influenced album opened the international stage for Helen. In 1996 she performed two of the tracks "Reality" and "Dreaming in Colour" on mainstream British television (BBC1). Three radio singles were released in the USA, increasing Helen’s fan base through extensive airplay.
