notes

"Anne Heaton has made a masterpiece. Plain and simple. In the hands of the right people, "Old Man by Twenty-One" could be a #1 hit. So amazing. Already I'm sure it's going to be my favorite album of the year."
- Matt Smith, Club Passim

"It's simply brilliant, we all love it!"
- Jen Perry, Melissa Ferrick's road manager

"Just when I get to thinking we've bottomed out on refreshingly original singer-songwriters with an edge, along comes Anne Heaton to prove me wrong"
- Scott Cullen, Concerts at the Crossing (featuring artists such as Laura Love and Erin McKeown)

"About a year and a half ago, I was introduced to Anne Heaton and was very impressed with her songwriting. Over the next year, we recorded an album - one that transcends the usual singer/songwriter production values but still maintains the intimacy and the essential character of Anne's sophisticated melodic writing. The first cut on her CD, "Take Your Desire", is about as good a AAA "hit" as I've heard in many years."
- David Seitz, Prime CD & Producer (Richard Shindell, Suzanne Vega, Susan McKeown)

"The songs sound great! - I've been listening to the demo since yesterday and it sounds absolutely gorgeous. I love the production on "Spinning" and "Old Man by 21" sounds downright destined for film. Has kind of a Paula Cole (a la Harbinger) feel to it and I can SO hear it in a movie. From the sounds of it, you've hit the nail on the head. Damn fine job." -Kerry Bernard, Young Hunter Management

"I just got the CD and I'm listening to it now and it's absolutely wonderful!" - Cindy, Programmer WERS Boston Radio

"I loved Anne's record "Black Notebook" and wondered if she would live up to my expectations when I saw her perform live and she did. Anne is a terrific musician and her show was a total joy."
- Jonathan Horn, Entertainment Attorney, Grubman, Indursky & Schindler

Anne Heaton Bio:
The New Haven Advocate voted Heaton "Best Singer-Songwriter" of 2000 and The Boston Globe calls her "easily [one] of the area's most notable female singer-songwriters." Chris Smith, former editor for Performing Songwriter Magazine, writes "Heaton is one of the finest writers and performers I've come across in years - she is one of the standards by which I measure talent in the New York music community. That she is not on a major label is nothing short of criminal."

Heaton has performed as a solo artist, as a duo with guitarist Frank Marotta, Jr., and with her band at colleges, clubs, and festivals around the country such as Hamilton College, Yale University, Fez, Makor, Toad's Place, Schuba's Tavern, The Somerville Theatre, The Double Door, The Point, Club Passim, International Festival of Arts and Ideas, Ectofest, Northampton Music Festival, and The Rockrgrl Conference. Heaton has shared the stage with Jonatha Brooke, Ellis Paul, Melissa Ferrick, Dan Bern, Max Roach, Cliff Eberhardt, Beth Amsel and Sloan Wainwright.

During the summer of 1999, Heaton finished in the top 20 out of 800 entries in the Lilith Fair online competition. The following year, Heaton was invited to attend ASCAP's Advanced Songwriters' Workshop in New York City. In 2001, Heaton, as one of several up-and-coming performing New York area songwriters in the "Live from New York" show (which includes Edie Carey, Teddy Goldstein & Andrew Kerr), Heaton helped break attendance records at The Living Room, Club Passim and The Point. The "Live From New York" Group has more recently performed at The Somerville Theater, Noe Valley Ministry (San Francisco), and FEZ.

Heaton's music is subtly spun narratives set to catchy, often syncopated, melodies. According to Songwriters' Monthly (5/99), "Heaton's love for her craft and for her audience is apparent in every stage gesture, every funny aside, and every stanza of every song." "I've never seen an artist entrance a room of listeners the way Heaton does - she magically brings the listener to another level" (Brooke Primont, BMI). Heaton's charming stage presence has matured not only from the experience of performing her own songs but also from the experience of singing traditional spirituals and original jazz compositions on tour with legendary jazz drummer/composer Max Roach, performing to audiences of over 3,000 in London and Paris. Anne came to be a singer for Max Roach's tour by singing in a Gospel Choir in Harlem where all choir members were encouraged to learn early American song forms as well as classical pieces.

Tom Neff of Grassy Hill Concerts says "Heaton's bluesy piano folk has a unique slack-voweled, angular-melodied sound, while the lyrics explore a kind of blue-collar rapture I find very affecting." Terry McNamara of The Chicago Folk Alliance says "When Anne sings, she reminds me of a female Ray Charles."

Heaton's new songs are catchy soaring melodies with great emotional pull and smart lyrics. Her upcoming release Black Notebook, co-produced by David Seitz (Suzanne Vega, Susan McKeown), is backed by lush full-band textures (and often set to hypnotic hip-hop-like loops) and hosts an amazing line-up of musicians including drummer Shawn Pelton (The Saturday Night Live Band) and Michael Visceglia (Suzanne Vega).

  • anne heaton shows talent!
    author: angrumman

i recently got "black notebook" in the mail (thanks cd baby!) and i really like it. i've been playing it a lot, and 'take your desire', 'your heart is for breaking' and 'black notebook' are my favorite songs so far. the piano is such a wonderful sound- a true treat because i don't hear it much from other musicians... makes me wish i didn't quit piano lessons when i was 9. anne has tackled the subject of love/relationships with beautiful courage and grace. a true feat that many cannot claim! anne's voice is intriguing and draws you into the music. i can't stop singing along! well done anne!!

  • anne heaton is a true talent
    author: hanna

Black Notebook is a terrific CD-- the honesty and integrity of the songs really come through by way of anne's soaring voice. her lyrics are evocative and catchy, and the melodies are often simple, but innovative. "Black Notebook" is easily the best song on the album-- musically and lyrically. But all the songs are unique and wonderful in their own way. My only complaint about the CD are some of the arrangements of the band orchestrations. They sound a little canned and don't really lend themselves to Anne's lush sound. I have seen her live several times and there is just NO comparison. The songs are really freed from their studio constraints and take on a whole new life. I only say this because I think that Anne is an amazing talent, and as a fan and a musician, I want her CDs to highlight her in the best possible way to do this amazing young singer justice. But, BUY THIS CD. You won't be sorry. Bring it with you on train rides, to the gym, everywhere. "Black Notebook" will quickly become part of the soundtrack to your life.

  • Something else!
    author: Anna

This album contains an amazing range of songs in terms of style and content, her lyrical talents range from writing with affectionate humour to invoking drama, passion and sensuality confirming Anne H's versatility. Consequently you can't fail to find a favourite song on here - mine keeps changing but 'Black notebook' is my enduring preference. She has a great voice and I just can't resist the piano on several tracks. This a genuinely original album, lie back and enjoy!

  • Absolutely amazing

  • Mystical...complete magic and bewitching
    author: Mike Morella

All that can be said about this album can be everything. There isnt one word to describe it because what it does to the listener is so much more. It feels like a jazzy hot bath with the complete beauty and magic of a love spell. Anyone who listens to this album will fall head over heals and never look back...

  • Get Lost
    author: Matt Henley

Usually intently aware of lyrics on most albums, I find myself unable to distinguish any on this recording. Anne's melodies, orchestrations, and voice overwhelm me with beauty and depth; the lyrics are just a bonus to be discovered later. I play it loud and jam out. I play it soft and cry. It is so easy to get lost in the honesty and purity of the writing and the performance. I can't wait to buy the next one.

  • Nicely done Anne! I am very impressed with Black Notebook.

Black Notebook has all the polish and pizzaz of a major label recording, plus something else. Substance! Every song had an impact on me, musically and lyrically. If your wondering if pop/rock music is dead...the answer is NO, not if you buy this CD!!!!!

You'll close your eyes and never want to open them again. This CD will mesmerize you. One of the most complete cd's I have heard in years.

  • A Total Aural Sensation
    author: Troy J Shadbolt

It is such a treat to hear so many of Anne Heaton's trademark songs embellished with lush instrumentation. It's hard to believe this is an indie release. Like many of the 'Live From New York' performers, it's a crime (a crime I say!) that a major label has not taken notice of the intelligent and thoughtful art pouring forth from this songwriter. 'Take Your Desire' and 'Old Man at 21' could easily be top ten hits on AAA/Pop charts if given a chance. Well, maybe not, these are songs with DEPTH and CONTENT. Thanks Anne for sharing!

  • ABSOLUTELY AMAZING
    author: Edie Carey

"Black Notebook" is incredible. It's the best indie recording I have heard in years, and Anne is one of the best songwriters out there, hands down. This will be one of the best music purchases you ever make.
