notes
In The Prairie Land reflects Patrick Hazell's strong interest in Regionalist music and art. The album was recorded sound-on-sound by Hazell playing acoustic grand piano, synthesizer, harmonicas, flutes, and an assortment of percussion and miscellaneous instruments including the Zube Tube.
"In The Prairie Land came from my feelings about that vast expanse between the Missouri River and the Colorado Rockies--the area that used to require a bottle of whisky to relieve the boredom when I crossed it as a college student thirty years ago on my way to the party towns of Boulder and Estes Park.
Since 1992, my wife and I have traveled west several times and have begun to appreciate the prairie with its stark and subtle beauty--in many ways I now prefer it to the mountains. I began to read diaries and histories about the early settlers--accounts of life on the Great Plains; I went to the small one-room log cabin where Dr. Brewster Higley penned 'Home On The Range'; I took countless photos; wrote many poems; and, now, I've recorded this album, and I hope the music conveys to the listener the majesty and wild beauty of the American prairieland."
