the music of Chris Harrington gets ever more organic
author: Overplay.comLike creepers and vines bursting through the tarmac of central London and turning The West End into a sleepy glade, the music of Chris Harrington gets ever more organic. On his third ep, the Essex-based singer and guitarist presents five portraits of natural, shimmering elegance. A bit like Springwatch without Bill Oddie. The introduction is 30 seconds or so of acoustic guitar twinkling, but it feeds straight into the second track, The Breathing Pine. Theres a delicate melody afoot, but it gracefully gives way to gentle rhythms that flex in and out with broad-chested patience. The Unwritten Song is a slightly busier affair, but no less refined. The sort of music you might find soundtracking salmon powering upstream in a documentary. There are only two songs here where Chris actually sings, but even then his unassuming vocal becomes another part of the acoustic harmonies. Theres a modest passion to the title track as he talks of being wild and free, while on the closing Motions he delivers a clean, modern folk number that hints at the restrained melancholy of Aqualung or Jose Gonzalez. Voice or no voice, though, Message from The Dawn is as therapeutic as a paint-by-numbers set where its OK to go over the lines. by overplay
