"One of the local scene's brightest stars, Mr. Nourallah's songwriting seems to get sharper everyday. Nourallah has created a pop masterpiece in the vein of Elvis Costello and the Replacements" - Dallas Morning News
The inside credits of the Happiness Factor's "Avoid Danger" reads like a who's who of the Dallas, Texas music scene. Just to name a few who leant a helping hand to head honcho Salim Nourallah: Carter Albrecht (the Sparrows), John Dufilho (Deathray Davies), Danny Balis (Sorta), Steve Duncan (Chemistry Set), Jason Garner (Deathray Davies), Doug Cox (A Hard Night's Day) and Danny DeLaMatyr (the Days and Rhett Miller's Instigators). It was recorded over a two-week period right before Salim was about to disappear for months of touring with Rhett Miller and the Instigators. The premise was, as time was tight, a different group of Salim's super-friends would be invited over to his Pleasantry Lane studios every day. Songs that they'd never heard before would be thrown at them on the spot, learned as quickly as possible and then immediately recorded. Everything was done before any over-thinking could set in.
From the opening chug of the Kinks-esque "In-Crowd" to the final sarcastic word of bonus track "Mr. Critic", this record explodes with the freshness of songs that were captured before they could be flogged to death by over-working. Check out the T-Rex meets "Come Together" crunch of "Insane ledger"; the Bowie/Pulp swagger of "Proper Channels"; "Weight of the World" and its stark Plastic Ono Band mantra; "The Man From the Filling Station" with its crazed 'Beatles on acid while roaming La Mancha' feel; "The Hand that Feeds" snotty-ska Clash/Costello workout. Clocking in at just over half an hour, "Avoid Danger" cuts to the chase and packs a mighty lyrical wallop.
Happiness Factor has already had the pleasure of touring with and opening for such Texas rock'n'roll luminaries as the Old 97s, Deathray Davies, Slobberbone & Chomsky, as well as, Blondie, Superdrag and the Figgs.
They admire John Lennon, the Clash, Johnny Rotten, the Ramones, Captain Sensible, Wreckless Eric, the Stooges, the Replacements, either Elvis (when they were cool!) and the Kinks...you know, people who wrote good songs, loved a good back-yard barbecue and can't dance to save their lives!
