notes

It’s the sound of simplicity and brilliance. With “Young Amelia” Seattle-based Award winning Singer Songwriter Hans York takes acoustic music to new heights. A sense of intimacy permeates each song as the listener is invited to travel an eloquent and emotional landscape ranging from playful to profound.

Recorded live, some of the best young musicians in the business joined Hans York on these 12 outstanding songs. Pay special attention to the rhythm feel and control of Jon Hamar (bass) and Chris Stromquist (percussion) as shown in the opening track Tell me Why. Eva Scow’s sweet mandolin and Dusty Brough’s harp like nylon string guitar add gorgeous depth and delicacy to the title track Young Amelia. The talents of Myra Joy, Larry Murante, Kym Tuvim, and James Hurley are everywhere, but stand out in the beautiful Snow, Invocation, and Love is Here.

Everybody’s there with Hans York and so are you as the music pulls you close. Hans York has this unique ability to intertwine the genres. Folk, World, Pop, and Jazz are blended with great elegance and braveness.

  • Wonderful
    author: George Christiansen

I absolutely love this album. I have listened to it so many times in the last couple of weeks that I've lost count. It is playful and optimistic without drifting into being trite or phony. Vocally, Hans York's voice has a familiarity of the best parts of James Taylor and Paul McCartney, while never crossing the line into imitation. The instrumentation is beautiful. Great players all around. There is enough musical continuity for it to sound like a true album, but without the songs sounding just like each other. Elements of jazz, bluegrass, classical, pop, and folk blended together to create something that will surely stand out in your music collection.

  • Young Amelia

This album is a lyrical, melodic celebration of life. That is why I bought a copy for me and then two more copies for friends. It is so wonderful to share Han's beautiful music with others!

  • Music I return to often
    author: Nancy Kelly

I return to Hans York Music when my soul needs a serenade. Hans' rivers of notes and tumbling lyrics remind me that life is indeed beautiful. The songs on Young Amelia somehow leave you feeling comforted and hopeful again--ready to get back up and start again. Never disappointed by, as he so optly puts it, "I just received a Lifeline through storm and wind".

  • Young Amelia - a jewel!
author: Jo-Ann Greene - All Music Guide

With Young Amelia, Hans York enters fresh musical pastures, ones painted in soft pastels, for a gentle set shimmering in love's bloom. The entire album is themed around matters of the heart, and its introspective nature will resonate with anyone who's been touched by love's waves. Relationships are built and crumble within, for even when York is in the grip of amour he finds it difficult to let go of the dark shadows that lurk round the corner. Is he emotionally distant, as one lover claims within? The lyrics here certainly suggest otherwise, but, and there often seems to be a but impeding his relationships, a certain cool detachment occasionally clouds the sunny skies. Perhaps York is just over thinking his relationships, refusing to unleash his feelings so they can reach their true depths. Which isn't to suggest that Young Amelia is a bloodless affair, in fact, the set is infused with warmth, found not only in the singer/songwriter's sweet tenor, but also in the album's music, atmospheres, and production. The music itself is sublime, as gentle as a summer's breeze, one can easily lose oneself in its serene beauty, but listen closer and one discovers a complex world of sound. On the upbeat, Latin lashed "Tell Me Why" and Americana meets classical "Lifeline" it's easy, for York's amazing finger picking is showcased. But check out his exquisitely delicate work on "The Garden" and "Snow", his subtle bluesy licks on "Invocation" or laid-back playing on the jazzy "Been in Love" to glimpse the breadth of his style. On "Love Is Here" York even pushes into pop. Supported by a cast of excellent musicians Young Amelia is a luminescent jewel of a set, its milky atmospheres as lovely as an opal.

  • "oooohhhh - what's going to happen next?!"
author: Esther Golton -Whole Wheat Radio, AK

Hans York understands the importance of melody and melodic phrasing, and his melodies are both unique and listenable. I like the way he has allowed his guitar and other instruments to follow his vocal melodies in unison, which brings out their catchy beauty even further. And overall, the arrangements on Young Amelia are just great. I have that perky-eared "oooohhhh - what's going to happen next?!" feeling from song to song. There's a delightfully uncluttered sophistication to this album. It will keep my interest for a long time.
