notes
"Not too often, musicians come along and invent their own instrument. Maybe they literally bolt together an entirely new vehicle, or carve a new slope to play on. More marvelous is when someone takes an instrument you thought you knew and tilts it just so, dazzling us with new reflections. Those folks are rare: Django Reinhardt, Lester Young, Bobby McFerrin, Edgar Meyer, Paul Hanson
All the adjectives are true. Paul plays physically impossible stuff on perhaps the weirdest instrument of the Weird Jazz Instrument Club. Playing at the very highest level. Surpassing most anyone's conception and ability on one of the most unforgiving instruments ever. Think of playing Paganini on the ocarina, or winning the Kentucky Derby on a camel."
Darol Anger, co-founder of the Turtle Island String Quartet.
Paul Hanson-jazz bassoonist who has performed and/or recorded with Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, Wayne Shorter, Peter Erskine, Billy Higgins, Boz Scaggs, Dewey Redman, Don Cherry, The Temptations, Anger-Marshall band, Oaktown Irawo, the Klezmorim, Ray Charles, and others. Why have I been wasting my time in orchestras all these years? Paul Hanson is amazing and his jazz bassoon playing has given me a new reason to pick up the horn and practice more! This CD is a unique jazz treasure!
Great bassoon vibes
author: StarbuckA CD not just for bassoon fanciers but anyone who enjoys listening to great jazz tunes. The sound of the instrument is rich and hot. Forget about trumpets, trombone and sax - long live the bassoon!
Vibrant!!
author: Lou RomanoThe bassoon is alive! Very vocal!! This is a great album, it swings, and it's colorful. Everyone plays from the heart!!!-----------------Uplifting.
A "must-have" for your music/jazz collection!
author: VenitaIt's as if the souls and spirits of all the legendary jazz musicians came to rest in the fingers and bassoon of Paul Hanson (corny, but true)! All the tracks are HOT, but once you hear Strawberry Prelude, that's it - you'll be a fan for life. It's almost surreal that you're not listening to the saxophone, but a bassoon. Final thought: AWESOME
