Several years ago, I started the Irish Songs & Lyrics (www.irish-song-lyrics.com) website to help musicians learn new songs by ear, the way I do. The site features Irish song lyrics, chords, and streaming audio files so you can listen to the songs you want to learn.

Unfortunately, the website stopped growing because we stopped recording. I decided to expand the website in 2006 by recording a bunch of Irish pub songs under a different name--4 Irish Whiskey. To make it more "authentic", I recorded the songs with an Irish accent.

Then a year later, a fan sent me a book of sea shanties. I thought some of those songs would make nice additions to the website, so this time I took on a pirate persona and added new songs to the website.

Now it is time to release the music officially under my own name. I remixed the songs and compiled the two CDs into one. It's called "Going for Brogue: Irish Pub Songs and Sea Shanties with an Accent". The CD features 19 Irish pub songs and sea shanties performed by yours truly with a variety of bizarre Irish accents. There's over 68 minutes of music on one environmentally conscience CD. "Going for Brogue" is raucous fun that shines like the heart of Irish folk music.

  • Great Rendtions of old favorites!
    author: Andy L.

Marc has put together another great collection of songs. Although I own at least one other version of nearly all of these songs, in part thanks to my membership in Songhenge, Marc's versions are quickly becoming my favorites. His blend of humor and variant lyrics make these songs fun to listen to again and again. Even if you've never heard any of Marc's other albums or his work from the Brobdingnagian Bards I strongly recommend this album. If you own everything he's ever recorded then you're trying to decide, buy this album. If you hate Celtic and Irish music I have no idea why you're reading this, but support a working, independent musician and BUY THIS ALBUM!

  • Great Familiar and New Song Mix
    author: Lincoln Crisler, http://lincolncrisler.com

I've been a fan of Marc's music, solo and with the Bards, for the last couple years. I've heard a good amount of Celtic and Folk music since then (the Bards got me into it) and I love hearing Marc's interpretation of songs I've heard elsewhere first. There are a good number of familiar songs on here (Mermaid Song, Whiskey in the Jar) as well as several songs I've never encountered before. He performs all of them well, and this disc will see regular rotation in my car on road trips and drives to work.

  • incredibly lively and charming album
    author: Katja

This album is so great, its fun, its a collection of songs I love to sing and hear at home or at the pub, and its incredibly lively. There were moments when I felt I wanted to jump out of my chair and begin dancing and singing! If an album can make you want to do that, then its a great album. Marc brings his own charming personality into his music and it makes it unique. Going for Brogue: Irish Pug Songs and Sea Shanties with an Accent, is highly recommended to all that love a good Irish pub song!

  • Good collection
    author: Jeff H

Going for Brogue: Irish Pub Songs and Sea Shanties with an Accent, is a good compilation of songs. It has a few songs such as Old Fenian Gun and Whiskey, Johnny! you don’t hear often, and that makes them stand out in this collection. Marc is in fine form with his “brogue” making this a unique sounding album. This is a good album for a mix of pub songs and sea shanties.

  • Slainte!
    author: GDegler

This is a truely great album, Going for Brogue is a wonderful mix of traditional Irish songs and sea shanties. I have to say Old Fenian Gun and The Foggy Dew are my favorites. Being a avid listener of Marc's podcasts, I've heard most of these songs before, It's great to have them all together now on one album

When most people think of Marc Gunn's music, they probably think of him as one half of the Celtic/comedy duo Brobdingnagian Bards, or as that guy who keeps doing CDs about his cats. Well, this CD isn't about cats, and it isn't comedy (though some of the songs are funny). This is a CD of traditional Irish pub songs and sea shanties sung with a brogue. I'm not talking about a stereotypical "Irish cop in an old movie brogue." I'm pretty sure no one is chasing Marc to get his Lucky Charms, either. I have no idea if that's how real Irish people sound as I've never been to Ireland, but it's probably fairly close. Anyway, the songs are great. I'm especially fond of the sea shanties, though I expect that's related to my love of things piratical. In any case, this is a great CD, and I would recommend it to any lovers of Celtic or folk music or music lovers in general.

  • Perfect With a Pint
    author: James E. Erbaugh III

Marc has put together a perfect collection of great Irish songs and sea shanties. This is music for sitting down with friends and having a pint or two (or many, many more). I have never heard these songs done on a harp and it works great. A must have for Irish music fans.

  • Thrill of the Pub....from home!
    author: Kalamommy

I've been addicted to Marc's various podcasts for weeks now....and this set of tunes is just as addictive! His playfulness and enthusiasm leap out at you and take hold, with songs both familiar and fun...you will find yourself singing along. If you are blessed with Irish blood or just like to pretend that you are (shh, we won't tell), you will not be disappointed. :)

  • I love the folk process at work :)
    author: Amanda Geyer

Marc's voice and interpretations of a number of songs I was already familiar with put me in a mood tae fill me glass and meet with m'friends of an evening... While some of the lyrics were different from the versions I originally learned, it was interesting listening to Marc's interpretations. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this to anyone that likes traditional Irish music, anyone heading off on a ship (be it Navy or mere pleasure cruise), or enjoys accoustic music.

  • Playful and Charming
    author: Victoria C

This was a playful and endearing take on some old shanty favorites. There is sweetness and lighthearted playfulness to this album that makes me want to share whiskey drinking songs with children. (But I wont.) Still, this album makes me feel like a kid again and I want to jump on the bed and sing along. I especially liked the gems I in “Haul Away Joe”.

  • author: Hutch

This is great! Very upbeat for irish music..made me wanna dance. And the Humours of Whiskey....OH MAN! Could I tell ya some tells of people drinking whiskey. I loved it. Kinda reminded me of my grandpa and his homemade whiskey drinking days. :P

  • Hell of a fun album
    author: Lynn McKinney

This is one of the most fun albums I've heard in years: it's perfect for fans of rough and ready bar music or pirate songs, and for devotees of Marc Gunn's unique and richly textured vocal style. The recordings are done in a unique style of off-the-cuff performance; they bypass the banality of perfect polish in favor of sheer enthusiasm and joy much more appropriate to the style of music presented. I defy any fan of seafaring music to stay quiet during "A Drop of Nelson's Blood" or "Mingulay Boat Song." Even the least musical among us can join in and belt one out with Marc on this album, so I advise you to get this album, break out your best Irish brogue, pour a glass of your favorite beer, and sing along!

Great album. Old pubsongs and sea shanties ... Oops, don't be mistaken, not sung by an old Irishman or sailor, but by a young American. I love the funny accents, Marc. The songs keep stuck in your head. A fine selection of known and less known songs brought in an original way. I can only recommand it to all that like the get the feeling they are in an old pub near a harbor and have rainy day cheered up.
