notes

Marc Gunn is an Irish and Scottish folk singer with a strange affinity for Celtic ballads, drinking songs and cats. He is the lead singer for the Brobdingnagian Bards and host of the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast.

While best known for singing Celtic songs, Gunn began his musical career as a songwriter. Here, he expresses himself with three original songs inspired by two TV shows and a movie.

"A RABBIT FOR HALLOWEEN"
With Halloween nearing in 2006, I started thinking about Bugs & Witch Hazel in "Broom-Stick Bunny". I sat down with my autoharp and started retelling the story of an ugly witch who is threatened by Bugs Bunny dressed as an uglier witch for Halloween. But when Witch Hazel finds out that Bugs is actually a rabbit, she realizes she needs him for a potion. During the fight to kill Bugs, Witch Hazel accidentally drinks a potion that makes her beautiful. Then the Genie in the mirror goes ga-ga chases after her on his flying carpet.

"STARDUST SERENADE"
This instrumental piece came to my mind right after watching the movie Stardust. It is a sweet, reflective tune inspired by love.

"SHE SAID HER NAME WAS SAFFRON"
I received an email while I was in Ireland for a contest by SerenityStuff.com to write a song about Saffron (or YoSaffBridge), the beautiful and manipulative vixen from Firefly, Joss Whedon's popular television show. She was one of my favorite bad guys in the show. And being in Ireland, a melody came easy. I wrote the song to "May Morning Dew", a beautiful Irish ballad.

3 great songs. To be honest I never saw any of the films/series it was based upon before I heard the songs. Well, if you're like me ... after hearing the songs, you go looking for the DVD's as well. My husband still wonders how I could predict the Firefly episode "Our Mrs Reynolds" before even seeing it.

  • Three times the fun

Austin, Texas' "Modern Minstrel', Celtic songwriter, autoharp player and website guru Marc Gunn has released three beautiful, bardic ballads here in the filk style. (Acoustic folk music written with inspiration from Science Fiction, Fantasy and other genres of film and television). With the playful "A Rabbit for Halloween", the relaxing "Stardust Serenade", and the painfully romantic "She Said Her Name Was Saffron", Gunn has really come into his own in songwriting. "Rabbit" and "Saffron" are superbly sung with an echo-effect on the vocals as a nice touch, and "Stardust" is superbly played, serving up some interesting, un-accompanied autoharp textures. It's only three songs, yes, but they're three exellent songs. (I guess it's better then releasing a whole album of mediocre material; Marc Gunn Would never release anything the likes of that, I can assure you).
