SINGER/SONGWRITER GRUB DOG
Grub Dog is an Austin singer/songwriter whose band (The Modestos) gives you the best of both worlds: bar band music you can listen to in the morning. He's been compared to Westerberg and Petty, his shows to the Flying Burrito Brothers, the Heartbreakers and the Stones. This is loud, no holds barred rock and roll with the added pleasure of refreshingly sweet songs.
These songs get to you.
From London's LUKE magazine: "Grub's songs about porn stars and sticky fingers would be considered lewd if they were delivered with a smirk. They're not, it's done with a poker face and that's what gives [them their] steely edge..."
From Sacramento Bee Pop Culture Editor Rachel Leibrock: "[Grub has] crafted a literate and catchy collection of No Depression-style songs. 'She likes my band, she's a Replacements fan, she says I sound like Paul.' sings Grub Dog on what just may be the best local pop song of the year, Sounds like Paul: 'I took it as a compliment if that's what she meant, though l don't sound like him at all.' While there are musical references to the likes of the Replacements, Bob Dylan and Uncle Tupelo, the band's sound remains fresh."
Watch for Grub Dog solo shows or better yet, with the whole gloriously loud band. What you'll get is pure, honest, unglamorous rock & roll, the kind that makes your bones rattle and your mouth dry for a beer. The kind you want to take home with you and listen to and ask, "Did he really just say what I think he said?" and then find yourself listening to it over again because it's just so damned good.
Grub's band has played shows with everyone from the Replacements' Slim Dunlap to Whiskeytown. Other shows include Robbie Fulks, Slobberbone, John Doe and the Backsliders. Once a host of his own open mic, Grub's been a curmudgeonly mentor to young musicians and a notoriously opinionated critic. His fierce commitment to songcrafting and rock & roll are perhaps the only reason you don't know him now as a pro drummer.
Grub Dog started playing drums at age 7 and, in a few short years, was playing Blues Brothers Country & Western dives with his dad's band, Golddusters. He's a smart, hard-hitting drummer with -you guessed it- an ear for the song. He's played drums with, among others, Kevin Seconds (7 Seconds), Gabe Nelson (Cake) and the Damnations. He currently plays with James Rider and the 420 Turnaround and is sitting in with Crawling with Kings. Playing drums is in his marrow, and so you'll probably always find Grub doing pick-up gigs with your local heroes at bars and in studios ....in between fronting the best rock band this side of Minneapolis.

so cool

Great, no frill Texas/Southern Rock!
author: Adrian SutcliffeThis is great, no frills Texas/Southern Rock - some tracks with a rock feel, some more country, some laid back & even one punk! All great but the stand out tracks for my taste are the fast, bluesy, guitar driven 808 & the melodic New Ring with particularly moving lyiric & vocals.
