-------------------------------------------------
The one and only album from The Jillians...

After nearly a decade of lending his services to other bands and other songwriters, Greg Roth is finally out on his own, establishing himself as a twenty-something singer/songwriter. Splitting time between Washington DC and Philadelphia, Roth has firmly entrenched himself in both scenes and is currently expanding his touring to include the northeast and mid-atlantic regions.

What stands out about Roth's songwriting are his lyrical detail and consistent knack for catchy melodies. Listeners are struck by his vivid vignettes of ordinary people in extraordinary situations, as well as by the shimmering alt-country pop melodies they are married to. The result is sweet, sophisticated pop music. Born and raised in the Lehigh Valley of Pennsylvania, Roth did not begin songwriting until he attended Millersville University and formed his first band, Pfinneas Gage. From there, he worked his way through various bands in central and eastern PA, while slowly honing his own songwriting skills.

In early 2000, Roth left Haywood Trout (named one of the best rock bands in Philadelphia by radio station Y100) to relocate to Washington DC and start his own band, The Jillians. Led by the songwriting of Roth, bassist Shawn Campbell and guitarist Jason Finneyfrock, The Jillians quickly become one of the most impressive and beloved new bands in the DC/Northern Virginia music scene.

Largely shunning the over-produced wall of sound approach that many other likewise bands pursue, The Jillians instead recorded their sessions entirely live (much like the Cowboy Junkies' Trinity Sessions) at NPR's Studio 4A with only two microphones, where such programs as All Things Considered are taped. The result was an organic brand of roots rock that has been called "warm, inviting and tuneful" (Demo Universe) with "good, thoughtful songs" (Left Off the Dial). "The material is strong," said Listen.com.

With the The Jillians effectively on hiatus, Roth is free to pursue his own career, as well as the various humanitarian causes in which he is involved. Most notably, Roth is one of the co-founders of Washington DC's Proof Through the Night, a non-profit organization that has raised over $15,000 for both September 11th and community-based charities and funds.

Drawing on such influences as Neil & Tim Finn (Crowded House, Split Endz), Glenn Tilbrook (Squeeze), Elvis Costello, Tom Waits, Freedy Johnston, Glen Phillips (Toad the Wet Sprocket), Joe Pernice, The Jayhawks, Wilco, The Band and Van Morrison, Roth seeks to further purvey sophisticated pop/rock for the singer/songwriter genre.

One of Roth's best-known songs, "Your Providence," has been covered by other local artists in the Washington DC area and is featured on the first volume of a two-disc set compilation of Arlington, Virginia songwriters. Three songs off The Jillians' Yes CD ("Las Vegas Wedding," "I'm Gonna Marry That Girl Someday" and the title track) were featured in the 2002 independent film, Breaking Down. "I'm Gonna Marry That Girl Someday" also appears on a compilation put out by DC's Rising Sons Records.

Roth is currently working on his first official solo release, The Wait of the World, due out in late 2003.
