Fever.....and the Jerry Grillo Band.
This CD happened after many years of experimenting vocally and instrumentally with jazz standards. I was always told that I sounded like so and so or so and so, and I clearly wanted my own style and voice. I wasn't in the business to imitate. I was doing all these great songs, and I wanted to sing them in a different way. The song "Fever" started it all because it got so many requests and would come up in reviews, conversations, or e-mails. The other songs followed.
The sidemen are schooled----but not rigid----and very talented. They bring their own styles and personalities to this
recording, and they do it very well. Barry Velleman plays the Steinway Grand on three piano/vocals. Scott Currier plays the Steinway Grand, Steve Peplin and Kirk Tatnall are on Contra Bass Guitars, and Randy Maio is on the Drums on the other nine tracks. This CD represents how my band and I interpreted these songs "live," and on any given night, we will do them in a different way. Jazz is freedom of expression, and this CD may go against the traditional jazz grain, but that's exactly why I recorded it, and that's why people come to hear us play. If anyone wants to hear traditional versions of jazz standards, there are thousands of great recordings to choose from, including some of my previous ones. If you appreciate something alternative, buy this one. One critic objected to the cover picture because he thought I looked Afro-American which I am not. It's not about the picture, it's about the music, and the recording quality is excellent!!!!!!!
