Gregory Page
Daydreaming At Night

Imagine Neil Young composing music for 1930s-era Italian films and you’ll get an idea of Gregory Page. The San Diego–based artist’s new album is full of cinematic melodies and sweeping violins. His wavering tenor brings life to lyrics about mysterious hauntings, broken hearts and city parks in the springtime.
There’s a sparkling, music-box quality to many of the tunes as well, especially on “Goodbye Everybody,” where he mixes xylophone with ukulele. “Come in From the Cold” is another stellar track, featuring whistling and a slow swing beat. “He’s gonna huff, he’s gonna puff, he’s gonna blow the house down,” Page sings playfully.
After one listen to Daydreaming, it won’t be hard to understand how Page’s side projects could include working with artists like Jason Mraz and Jewel. There’s a comfy ambience to his music that, day or night, will certainly set the mind to dreaming.
-----------------
Gregory's new album cover is titled “Red Headed Woman” was painted by his friend Mark Rimland, an autistic artist. Mark was one of the autistic savants with whom Dustin Hoffman worked in preparing for his role as an autistic savant in the Academy Award winning film Rain Man. Mark’s paintings have been exhibited and have won awards in exhibitions for handicapped artists throughout the United States. Mark’s artistic talent was not discovered until age 21. When his father preparing to write these notes asked Mark, then in his mid-thirties “When did your teacher learn that you are good in art?.” Mark’s reply was typical of the autistic savant: “September 15, 1977. It was Thursday.”

Rolling Stone ~ You've released approximately 8,176 albums (or so it seems). How does your last effort, "Daydreaming At Night", compare to your first in terms of songwriting and sound?

Gregory ~ You are exaggerating a bit on how many CD's I have independently released. Daydreaming At Night is my 16th album and it is exactly like my first album but a lot different. The themes are always the same..LOVE LOST, LOVE FOUND, LOVE LOST AGAIN. I record all my stuff in my tiny apartment bed room on out dated recording equipment. I believe each album I push myself to not over think the recording process. There is a solitude to recording yourself, all alone cutting a vocal track, I feel more vulnerable and I think it comes across in the finished project.

The first five bars of this disc were enough to cause a tightening of the chest, and a induced a difficulty breathing. This is a disc to pine to. If you have fallen in and out of love, or are waiting to, this is the disc to keep by your side.

  • What an album to discover a new artist. Gregory Page.
    author: Daniel Cabana

I am stunned by this album. Got the pick from the magazine Performing Songwriter. I bought it eyes closed because of The Ghost With Sad Eyes. It still is my favorite song but any of the other ones are fantastic stories, each with a musical mood of their own. And what about the 9:43 long Angel Sing Their Songs To Me. My best buy of the last two years was Keb Mo's Suitcase...until Gregory Page's Daydreaming At Night. What a discovery!

  • Beautiful. Magical.

I bought this CD because a portion of the proceeds benefit The Autism Research Institute, which is a charity that my site, CommonMime Causes, supports. What a gift I received! -Jane, CommonMime.com

  • A torrid love affair
    author: Sally Rutter

I am having a secret affair with Gregory Page's latest CD 'Daydreaming at Night'. (Ssshhh...Don't let 'Love Made Me Drunk' know.) It's hopelessly romantic, impassioned, elegant, thoughtful, dreamy, mysterious- everything a secret lover should be.
