notes
This CD sits on the knife edge of backwoods country and swampy-rock and takes you from the tension of angry guitars to the sweet settling hand of the dobro and the fiddle.
I’ve been writing songs about her for a long time: She - this girl, this woman, this female concept that has infected my being. She is no one person, yet with in all women there are shards of each personality these songs speak about. The Mother, the Lover, the Whore, the girl you stepped on and the girl who ran over your heart with a U-Haul truck. The crazy ex and the one you’re with right now that you promise to hold on to with a frenzied grip. This is a song cycle that begins with a no and ends with a yes. A cycle that goes through stories of rejection and damnation to stories about the reasons for holding on to that thing that is killing you softly. Love. She. ~ Darryl Gregory

Stunning Craftsmanship
author: Mary DempsterWhen listening to a recording for the first time, I try to sit back and take in each song and the album as a whole but with Darryl Gregory’s music, I am drawn towards the vocals and the instrumental layers – and can’t help getting totally caught up in the moment. I love the musical styles Darryl has chosen to frame his stories. As a singer, Darryl leaps from one vocal style to another but hits the bull’s eye on every track. I love Darryl’s lower register. He can lyrically sustain through mid and upper registers in the pensive ballads but can totally rock out when he wants to. Resonant but never too pretty, “Beautiful Lover” gives us hypnotic vocals entwined with soul- stirring harmonica ribbons. “Sweet Begonia,” is expressive ‘rusty nail’ singing. “She” bashes my head in and I enjoyed every second. I hear a little Jim Morrison in “Drivin’ In” and picture a guy on a stool in an acoustic café as Darryl sings “Lonely Day” and “Steel Mill Town.” Stunning craftsmanship.
She
author: PhilArizona alone I was (driving back to NYC from San Diego)... early morning, with SHE in the CD slot. My Toyota is transformed into the Oldsmobile 442 from my youth. As I bore through the expanse of desert and dark with Halfmoon Rd., Beautiful Lover and She, dawn magically emerges just as Out of Sight begins to play. Have listened to many records (CD's--I'm old) and this is now a favorite.
She...An Epic Story
author: MatthewFrom the electronica loops to the organic fiddle and mandolin, this album is in my upper echillon for creativity, lyrical content, and an all around great stories. The lyrics give the listener a glimpse of what this Veteran, Darryl Gregory, is capable of. Not only do I see this as a staple in my collection of music, but a benchmark ror the industry as well. Darryl is at the forefront of the indie scene, and is a beacon in the world of trashy pop, overplayed rock, and un-inventive techno. Thank you to musicians such as Darryl Gregory who take the music scene to yet higher ground.
She
author: David DemnitzBrawny, classic Americana, complete with Dobro guitars, harmonicas, whiskey and cars. Darryl’s deep, assertive vocal qualities are convincingly supported by an encyclopedia of instruments associated with American music making, most of them played by Darryl. Big block Chevy engine, body by Fischer.
SHE
author: Beth DavisDarryl has a HUGE range and is clearly a master musician. Some of the songs have the flavor of Widespread Panic while others bend rhapsodic with southern rock, country and blues styles. Intriguing, gifted storytelling.
