notes

Drummer Greg Caputo has always served as a great ambassador for Classic Swing Music.
Greg has toured with Count Basie, Artie Shaw, Harry James, Nelson Riddle and Benny Goodman in addition to countless noted jazz artists.

Classic Drummer Magazine describes him as
"A Master Drummer who speaks volumes in refined sensibilities with superb technique."

Classic Swing with a Modern Drive is a true live recording.
All of the charts are single takes before a live audience.
This is the way Greg wanted it - the enthusiasm of a live audience fueling a spontaneous, improvisational performance.
The band is made up of 17 of America's swingingest players,
(alumni of such bands as Buddy Rich, Maynard Ferguson,
Tommy Dorsey and Count Basie) and a great vocalist.

Legendary alto saxophonist Phil Woods is guest artist.
Phil performs two of his original compositions and accompanies vocalist Viv Murray on Skylark, simply beautiful.
Phil demonstrates his stunning virtuosity as player, composer and accompanist throughout.

Truly Hot Classic Swing Music with the added Velocity of a Modern Drive!

The band swings but, then again, what band wouldn't when you've got Greg Caputo kickin' the hell out of the charts. A Monster Swinger!!

SMOKIN'! It's a good thing this concert was recorded because nobody would have believed it! This is not a band of has-beens and wanne-be's. Greg Caputo has put together a band of guys who are top-notch players and who know what to do with a chart. If you thought the Big Band 'era' was over, think again. It's alive and kicking with some 'Golden Oldies' and some refreshing new charts that the veterans could only wish they had! The proof is right in the album. No cuts, no edits. These guys nailed it on the spot and Greg's solid-as-a-rock but not 'in-your-face' drumming kept them on the spot all night! Ya gotta have it!

I was fortunate enough to see the live date with my son, a huge Phil Woods fan. We walked away from the show as fans of the whole band. As much as my son loves Phil, he wanted more of John M. as well. Great live show, great CD

A new big band album is always noteworthy, most assuredly in this case. There is a reason that Greg Caputo can often be found driving the Basie Band and he brings that skill to this recording. The band is without a weakness and Greg is clearly in the drivers seat w/just the right amount of drive. As a leader he could have soloed on every tune but I think his musicianship dictated that he choose his moments and make the most of them, which he does! At the end of Sing Sing Sing he desreves to be out of breath as he thanks the audience. To top it off we have two lovely vocals(Skylark!) from Viv Murray and Phil Woods who brings his great charts and his distinct tone...he brought his "A" licks this night. The audio is amazing for a live date...sounds like the drums are in your lap! Get it but use a pot holder...it is HOT!

  • This CD is perfect for the fan of classic Big Band music. It's great to hear these charts performed live and in concert by great musicians. Legendary alto saxophonist Phil Woods solos with the ensemble on several pieces of music. Some are his own originals. His performance fits his legendary status in the jazz universe. He and singer Vivian Murray are outstanding on the song, 'Skylark'. I'm sure both Buddy Rich and Gene Krupa were smiling from heaven as drummer Gregory Caputo made their signature pieces, Nutville, Love for Sale, and Sing,Sing,Sing his own. Gregory honors these past masters by taking their classics and making their music swing, swing, swing!

Made an error on the concert date! April 8th 7 pm Plainville High School! If you get a chance, come hear this guy on his drums! Awesome plus!

We were just discussing how great it's going to be having Greg performing with the Plainville Wind Ensemble again in May and here comes his CD! Awesome! Sing, Sing, Sing makes us want to dance, dance, dance!

Greg has outdone himself on this one. Sing, Sing, Sing is a clasic. Music to my ears.
