Gravel Road started in the living room of The House in 1999. Listening to Fred McDowell, Junior Kimbrough, T-Model Ford, and RL Burnside every damn day had to have some effect on us...and when the guitar began to yell out at people walking by in the street, the drums had to follow. We had to play because all we heard in our heads was music...day and night...the pounding drums giving some ass to the one dirty guitar made to sound like three. We took this show into basements, on top of beds, in trucks and finally to the east where in another moment of inspiration, we yell for some bass and Kirby answered, and we've had the big bottom flapping the fat strings ever since. Stefan's Vocals, Guitar, and Words are deep and raw and hypnotic, spinning tales of sex, murder, death, love, redemption, and madness. Jon "Kirby" brings a thick, loose and groovy Bass glue to hold the mess together. Marty brings us a down home Delta rhythm whirlwind of Drums to keep us moving. Together, we are a band, and we will rock the sh*t out of you.
We released our first full-length self-titled CD at the very end of 2004 to some critical acclaim, received radio airplay all over the world, and played live. We love playing shows, love to see people sweat and shake and move and yell at us...and buy us drinks! We have grand designs on taking over the world along with our sibling band, Sugar Farm, and the combined might of both bands to form a super-group that will leave people sweat soaked & feeling like they've just had the best sex, and thinking..."What the f**k was that?!? I want some more!" Stay tuned good friends...we're coming for your souls and your asses.

Not Bad for a bunch of White boys!

First of all I need to say a big thank you to Joe Cushley and his Resonance show for turning me onto this skilfully brute offering, secondly to Fat Possum, and in particular the music of Junior Kimbrough, for inspiring an artist to release one of the most significant blues albums in a long time. This is one of those releases you just can’t stop listening to, from the opening ‘Baby I Love You’ to closer ‘Sad Days’ (aptly dedicated to Fat Possums Junior Kimbrough), the music comes straight ahead, drawing the listener in through the incessant guitar drawl, solid drums and interlacing saccharine guitar riffs. In an issue where the music of Jeff Beck, Rod Stewart and George Thorogood served to showcase how out of focus the Blues can be, it’s reassuring to hear modern music in keeping with the core sensibilities of the genre that can move and excite the listener with uninhibited ease. sweet and refreshing
author: just a listenerawsome cd--brings back some classic style (which i fear is tragically dying these days) and yet with a whole new spin, "jesus on the ward" is hands down the best song, but you've got to listen to the lyrics. if you are going to compare this style to anyone, your closest bet is probably a mix of the R&B work of hendrix, with the dark style possessed by jim morrisson and the doors, with [a much less hippy virsion of] steppenwolf (think "the pusher") and maybe with a LITTLE of the Who mixed in there somewhere...accept they are far more raw then all those artists...but that's what's so inovative about the group. often the music reminds me of kurt cobain's version of "lake of fire" (originally by the meatpuppets) and a few of the R&B beattles songs--especially "One After 909", and even a little of the U2 song "Bullet the Blue Sky". The band is also rather reminicent (at least i think) of Black Sabbath, although with more of a raw blues feel and less electric guitar--they are much closer to the original band with (more or less) the same members as Black Sabbath which was formed by Ozzy much earlier and was far more R&B oriented. This band was called Earth--sadly they never recorded anything...crying shame too.... Anyway, in the end it is of little consiquence who they are reminisent of, BECAUSE as my (probably futile and inaccurate) attempts at identifying such relationships are of no use if you don't get the CD and draw your own conclusions. So do that, and you will lay this troubled (and now ranting) mind to rest. Thank you and goodnight
