notes

"If we could, we'd pour this sound on pancakes."

-The Boston Globe

"Every song on Original Soul was penned by Potter. The fruit of that labor is on display in the intimacy between her voice and the music. Accompanied by the Nocturnals, every aspect of this album is intertwined, every note and moment are one being, uninterrupted by hype or expectation. This is the album artists dream of making and for Potter it's only the beginning."

-Performer Magazine

"Much has been written about Potter's voice, but no adjective can really define just how good it is. From a breathy whisper to a bluesy groan, she beats most singer-songwriters by leaps and bounds."
-Ethan Covey, Seven Days

Twenty-one year old pianist and vocalist Grace Potter is fresh off the completion of her latest album, "Original Soul," which features musicians who have collaborated with musical greats ranging from Bonnie Raitt to Warren Haynes. A mid-March tour in Dublin, Ireland proved the album was filled with promise and Potter is now spreading the new sounds throughout the New England area. Teaming up with her are the Nocturnals, a bluesy, soulful, and funky outfit with an impressive and mature dynamic range.

  • Great Stuff !!
    author: David B Siegel

I have her other two cds and they are a bit slicker from a production side. This cd is raw and really shows off her great voice.

  • author: Thomas M. Burgess

The room that I was in, while listening to this CD became very smoke filled. The temp when up. But still things were very clear to me! What a great CD. Thomas

  • I liked the early Grace Potter best
    author: Samantha Betters

This CD is very soulful and spunky. It's groovy, jazzy, and downright funky. I wish the next two CD's continued to explore that sound Original Soul had going on.

  • too slow for me, but nice
    author: original soul

not bad for a start, a bit slow to be considered rock. Good music for a traffic jam, soul soothing like norah jones.

  • Voice And Soul
    author: Blake Gregory

Move over Norah Jones because Grace is in the room. Grace's smooth delivery is on target for a warm romantic evening. When you hear the lady sing you think she is singing just for you and you only. I can't recommend this CD enough.

  • This is a class act, period.
    author: Katie

This is not just another CD. No, this is music that will live on in time. I see it as classic, to keep as a soothing companion, for many, many years. I can honestly say that I will probably be listening to it when I am 90! There are no gimmicks here, just quality and class! Good job! Excellent!

  • Grace Potter is my new favorite musician

Wow! I was blown away by this album. Among my favorite vocalists are Norah Jones, Bonnie Raitt, Edie Brickell, and Joan Osborne, and Grace has found her unique spot among them. I love the way she bends those bluesey notes and adds that emotional texture to her music. This album and Nothing But the Water are wearing out my speakers these days.

  • outstanding soul drenched blues
    author: Darren

Loved the CD. Perfect blend of blues with a little rock and gospel sprinkled in.

  • Both CDs....great!
    author: Scooter

We originally got Grace's second CD "Nothing but the water" first and needed more. So we got "Original Soul". Both are fantastic! Nothing but the water being a little more bluesy and Original Soul being more soulful......but again both are fantastic!!

  • Great music for blues lovers
    author: Cheri

This CD is awesome. Grace Potter is along the lines of Bonnie Raitt's music. The songs are all great, but I especially enjoyed I Chose You, At Your Request, and Somebody Fix Me.

  • Wunderschöne CD
    author: Jürgen

Ich habe diese CD nun schon 30 mal oder öfter gehört und immer wieder erlebe ich sie neu. Einfach fantastisch!!!

  • Great Album
    author: Jim

Good job on the whole album, but I really liked "I Chose You".

  • Rough and smooth, gritty and slick, Joplin, Muldare, Raitt, great!
    author: Peg Scriver

Love it! Just the kind of stuff that I could listen to for hours. I really like the gutsy uh huh huh huh background vocal sounds in a couple of the songs. This is a keeper. I hope that she does more of the same!

  • Not only original soul, but plenty of it.
    author: Charlie C

A real nice listen the whole way through. The music is soulful, emotional and heartfelt. It's a nice introduction to Grace's music.

  • More bluesy and less gospel
    author: dave

I like this CD because it has more of a blues flavor than her previous CD.

as if to catch a cloud full of the trueth-beauty finds freedom

  • Hard to believe....

It's hard to believe that such an incredible album is coming from a generation that has seemed to gotten lost in mainstream music. Finally, a collection of songs with soulful meaning. This album can truly evoke emotions like artists from the generations before.

    author: Justin Eltoft

This was a great buy! I'm a huge fan of singer/songwritters, and her songs all have great lyrics! I bought this and her second album, and was extremely happy with both!

  • Best Opening Act
    author: Amanda

Great Album, even better Live. I love putting this album on and becoming immersed in the music.

  • Terrific--check her out live
    author: Erin Hart

The album is great. She is even better live. Improvises songs and play with tremendous energy and verve. Impressive young voice. Look forward to following her career.

  • Great CD, Great Band
    author: Greg

Great CD, just as good as the 2nd release (Nothing but the water). Great voice, very good songs.

  • Incredible!!
    author: chuck_stones

I think that pretty much every review I've read about this album sums it up beautifully; This is one of the greatest albums I've heard in a long, long time. I can't say much more than what other people have already said, other than to buy this album as it's true genius. Greetz to all from me in the UK. When oh when will the likes of Grace Potter be found in the UK?

  • Super CD - loved all the songs on the first listen
    author: Suzan B

Until I was doing a little surfing on the net to find some blues music, I had never heard of Grace Potter. I heard the samples on the website and loved her style. Bought the CD right away. Soon as I received it, I put it in the CD player in my car and haven't taken it out yet! I'll definitely keep her in mind when I'm in need of some new blues music!

  • author: David H. Burrows

A wonderful endeavor oozing with soul. No filler here. Ms. Potter has accomplished the rare feat of producing a combination of songs that both stand alone and melt effortlessly into one another.

  • Sit back, sip on wine/brew, and enjoy
    author: Soul Seeker

You know a great CD when you always listen from start to finish and the songs meld together one after another. So turn up that Hi-Fi, pour your favorite glass of wine/beer/other (if that's your bag) light a candle, and escape into that soulful place. The accompanying vocals and organ grinding on track 9 represent the essence of this album. Enjoy!

  • Great CD. Only heard one track on the radio. Fantastic Album
    author: Paul
  • Grace makes a Statement!
    author: Dwight

Original Soul is a refreshing venture into good old bluesy rock and soul. Grace and the gang really have it together - it has the sound and aura of the late 60's with the freshness of an outstanding voice that has finally been unleashed. Come out on the road Grace - would love to see you live.

  • My wife and I both love the CD.
    author: Earl

My wife and I saw Grace when she and the Nocturnals opened for Robert Cray. We both love their performance....we thought it was better than Robert Cray's section.....and would have rather they played all night. The CD was just as satisfying as her live performance. She has a great voice and does the blues very well.

  • Soulful, like the name says!
    author: Kabrown

This is one of my favorite buys off of cdbaby. The lyrics are smooth and easy to understand. Potter's voice is phenomenal, with tremendous range and makes this CD a real treat to listen to.

  • That's the best female blues I've heard in a while
    author: Sheepdog1p

She got my vote! I don't have much cash, but I'm buying the cd, Might be #1

  • Best blues I've heard lately.
    author: Linda

Seeing Grace live was a definite treat - fresh face, fresh sound, unbelievable pipes this gal's got. The CD leaves nothing to be desired. Every track grabs you.

  • The Good Word is Spreading
    author: TJ Griffin

Original Soul was a recommendation from my friends in another CD Baby band, Oval Opus, and they heard Grace Potter live in Boston. I love her album, I've added different songs to multiple playlists on my iPod - the songs each have their own unique sound and depth. I highly recommend this CD - and check out Oval Opus while you're at it! (sorry, shameless plug there)

  • Fabulous
    author: Todd

Also saw them open for Cray in Jacksonville and loved what we heard. This entire cd is fantastic and we can't wait for her new release, due out in the next couple of months.

  • Blew me away live!
    author: tim

Saw them open for Robert Cray in Florida and they absolutely blew the audience away. The line to get their CD at the concert was out the door, so I bought it here. Wonderful music, and a voice that will stay with you.

We received this CD as a gift and we absolutely LOVE it! The ballads are soulful. I have bee nlistening to it every day on my dreive to/from work.

  • Awesome CD from "unknown" artist
    author: Randi

I bought this CD to send to my brother-in-law who was in intensive care. (Thought it would cheer him up and decided it beats flowers.) I heard the CD on the radio for the first time in early February and I was blown away by Grace Potter's sound and by this CD. Grace Potter needs more exposure in the mid-Atlantic and the Midwest. Whoever called her an early Bonnie Raitt was right. And ordering the CD through CDBABY was as easy as pie.

  • Great Album That Needs more Exposure
    author: William Balanda

Grace Potter's Original Soul is an a great album. This freshmen debute from Potter recalls acts such as Bonnie Raitt, Norah Jones, and even borrows some swagger from the Rolling Stones. Running the gammet from Blues to Funk "Original Soul" defies the singer's young age (21) and the background she came from. At first the album sounds more like it was made by an aging soul singer from the Louisiana Delta, but in truth it's just a 21 year old college kid from Vermont. In the end this is nothing but a complement for the young Potter and her band The Nocturnals. The only regret is that the album does not measure up to her live performances. Perhaps featuring more guitar would help. Also, Potter's vocals while excellent on the album pale in comparison to her live renditions. However, these are minor faults that can only be remmedied on her up coming album(s). Hoping to see more from this rising talent, and expecting nothing less.

  • Hands down - Wonderful!
    author: melanie

This CD is explosive and soulful. The music and her voice together create a sound that is unmatched. Each song brings something to the table. I highly recommend. Impossible to be disappointed. Keep them coming.

  • I love It!!!
    author: Justine

She has a smooth soulful voice. The guitar and the organ make a full sound. Some songs are for kicking back in your living room and feeling good and mellow, others are for grooving. I gave her 4 stars instead of 5 because as awesome as her CD is, Grace Potter & The Nocturnals blew me away live! Thank you to Grace and the band for bringing the fun, soul, gospel, funk, and rock back!

  • I loved it
    author: sharon

I just love the music it is not your usual cd....Her voice is amazing....

  • One of the best CD's I've heard in a long time!!!
    author: Tim J.
  • What a voice!
    author: Bill Tracy

I heard about Grace Potter and the Nocturnals through a local website and have been completely blown away. The vocals are outstanding along with lyrics that aren't what you might typically expect from a soul/blues CD. The band does a wonderful job keeping the music interesting and fresh. Keep up the good work; I can't wait for their next recording.

  • Great CD
    author: mjhertz

This is a great CD. Her singing is somewhere between Nora Jones, Lucinda Williams and Bonnie Raitt, and the songs are solid and well-written.

  • Whoop de Whoop
    author: Kim Lasky

    soul rockin!

  • AWESOME
    author: Lenny D

Awesome CD, a GREAT mix of music. I had heard her reviewed as an "up-and-coming" with a Norah Jones sound. She goes so much further the Jones does, with far more variety!

  • Amazing
    author: Duncan

Original Soul is an album with depth. The lyrics are poignant, fun and sassy. Each track has a number of layers that reveal themselves each time I play the album. There is no doubt in my mind that Grace Potter and the Nocturnals are going to blow many people away as their music is discovered. Aside from being very talented musicians, they all seem to be having fun. It comes through brightly on the album. Don't miss it!

  • knockout stuff!!!!!!
    author: greg boyd

    loved all of it,~~~~~~~~~~great mix!!!!

  • Wow I was blown away by the lyrics, her voice and her musical presence
    author: Leah
  • Absolutely the best!!!!
    author: Lisa Mullinix

I love it!! I love it!! I love it!! Oh and did I say I love it? Seriously, this has to be the best blues/soul singer I heard in a long time....I can't wait to she her perform in person! I've been telling my friends over and over that they gotta listen to it...They've become Potter junkies now too!

  • Great lyrics, and an honest voice.
    author: E. Brownson

A great piece of music to be enjoyed for years. I am a long time fan of Bonnie and Norah and think that this CD is near to rival in that league. Waitsfield Vt should be so proud!

  • Wow!
    author: Anna

I just saw the band live and listened to the brand new CD on the way home. I am as impressed by their/her presence as her recording. I predict that this one is going to be famous. The album reminded me of many famous women while avoiding the trap of sounding like any of them. I was transported.

  • Original Soul is an inspiring and moving album!
    author: Kate

Hmm.hmm...great songs and lyrics. The music is inspiring and moving. Gracie has really refined and honed her writing skills on this one...and her voice is just right for the new songs. "All Grace Potter all the time" is my request! No more need for covers, tho I loved her renditions sometimes better than the originals.

  • Inspirational - Grace / The Nocturnals have hit IT early in life
    author: Joe VC

Clever, insiteful lyrics; a beautiful, soulful voice; superb musicianship. These folks are figuring out what takes many of us our whole life to do. Original music is alive and well in Vermont AND more importantly, in the souls of our very young people.

  • Amazing.
    author: Jay

Received the Grace Potter disk 2 weeks ago and it hasn't left the CD player in my car! Incredible voice!

  • Great album, Shockingly good, I put it right next to Alison Kraus and Nora Jones
    author: Sam Berlow

Great album, Shockingly good, I put it right next to Alison Kraus and Nora Jones in my collection. Grace is an original, her lyrics make you laugh and cry at the same time. I wish there was a record label that would give her total control and let do her thing. Her live performance is a warm experience, If you get a chance go see her.

  • Moving - Inspirational - I like the beat, I'll give it a 10!
    author: Mona

This album has motivated me to find my groove and get busy with it! Thank you Grace and God Bless
