notes
An album with no age that you can listen too smootly.
On October 18 of 1999, 'Verglas et Soleil' , Geneviève Neuville's first C.D. release, was lauched in Montreal at Cabaret St-Sulpice on St-Denis Street.
The record from the 26 year-old-artist received a warm, enthusiastic response . Some of the songs it includes had been already been broadcast several times on Radio-Canada, the French Canadian National radio, from Montreal, Quebec, Manitoba and Toronto. The artist also has been interviewed a few times on C.I.S.M, KCRH (California) and on Radio-Canada from Manitoba. The two firts singles "L'huitre et le Crabe" and "Le grand periple Blanc" have been number one on Mp3.com.web site.
Geneviève was raised in Frelighsburg, in the Eastern Townships of Quebec. She studied music at St-Laurent College and graduated with Honours from a Jazz program at University. She was a studen of, among others, Jerry Brown, Art Roberts, Luc Beaugrand, Dave Turner, Charles Ellison and Joe Sullivan.
She also has been a soloist and member of the Montreal People's Gospel Choir and of "Ntemo" a congolese gospel choir of Paris. Geneviève sang with other performing artists such as Jann Arden. Bruno Pelletier, Dan Bigras and Manon Brunet.
Since 1994, Geneviève has been pursuing her musical career singing in cabarets in Montreal and Paris. Her own lyricist and composer, Geneviève now 2006 has more that 40 songs in her repertoire. She performs her songs while accompanying herself on the piano with an easy, soft and jazzy touch. Indeed, this first popular release from Geneviève is jazz-tinted, with texts of a strong imagery, and a twist of musical colours from her region.
The recording and mixing of the album took place at Star Studios in Montreal with the good care of Michael Neron. It was mastered by Jean-Francois Chicoine at S.N.B.'s studios. For this production Geneviève got the help of talented musicians : Stephane Crete on bass and musical direction, Denis Boulanger on B-3 organ, Danny Mullowney on drums , Stephane Cote on saxophones, Patrick Graham on percussion and Jean-Francois Daignault as backvocalist.
Genevieve is also the lead singner of www.Tocca.info a great Jazz trio.
L'huître et le crabe
Une huître dansait sur ta plage
Buvant la vie à pleines dents
Eclose comme un printemps
Ouverte et fière en même temps
Sur le ciel étoilé de ton dos
Le crabe de ma main dérivait
Il est descendu vers la mer
Pour y jeter un peu d'eau
Quelques morceaux de verre
D'huître et de peau
Mille propos
Des élans de terre,
morceaux de vent éphémères
Dix mille morceaux
Quand l'huître dénicha le crabe
Une étincelle, hirondelle s'envola
Virevolta en sautant se referma
Elle tient mon cœur en otage
Quelques morceaux de verre
D'huître et de peau
Mille propos
Des élans de terre,
morceaux de vent éphémères
Dix mille morceaux
Divaguant de sable en eau
Le crabe est rentré sous terre
Car les vagues étaient de houle et de fer
Elles ont mis ma parole en morceaux

The music is magical, the images are vivid and sensual.
author: Mike CarrickThe music ebbs and flows inside you like a moonlit tide soothing and smoothing a sandy shore. Genevieve's voice is passionate, full of power and achingly gentle all at the same time. The lyrics do not so much tell a story as they present images and sensations that sweep you along. Bravo! :)
Fantastic
author: ThatJimGuyExcellent CD. Her voice is amazing, and the lyrics are very thought-provoking (if you understand French, which I do - if not, try an online translator to get a general, although probably not highly accurate translation).
A lovely voice
author: BbatterAnother anglophone able to submerge into Genevieve's depths despite my ignorance of French. I love her lush voice, I find the texture of her music embracing and elevating.
You're gonna like it!
author: Greg BogoshianVERY nice work! Piano reminds me a lot of a friend of mine's style which I can't get enough of. You don't need to speak French to get the feel of the music. Le Blues really has a feel of a smoky European Cafe' in the '40s to me... Vocals in all cases are super-sweet... Very cool vibe! Lots of folks are gonna like this!!
Poetic, lilting, sultry, and torched.
author: DoadAs a guitar player who records guitar music, this is a nice departure for me from what I would normally wish to hear. There's something about the French language that we all know mesmerizes us, in spite of our linguistic ignorance. That, coupled with a beautiful timbre to her voice, above adequate piano and accompaniment really embellishes this effort. Four stars from Doad!
Definitely worth a listen
author: JMSWhen I listened carefully to the first track, two things seemed obvious to me : - the musical quality is top notch - Geneviève sounds pleasantly different from what I'm used to. Like a mixture of several styles, not just relying on the good ole' receipts, unlike so many canadian singers ... In short : something fresh and new. I do speak french and the lyrics are truely beautiful as well.
I could listen to this all day.
author: Dave BlazerI don't speak French and seldom really enjoy listening to foreign language (to me) music, but Geneviève's voice is so melodious and has so many different textures that I could listen to it all day. A really wonderful sound.
