notes
Wowing audiences world-wide with their contemporary approach to original jazz music, the Glyn MacDonald Trio spare not a wayward note on their journey through realms of stage, studio, composition and beyond. Having collectively performed with jazz greats such as James Morrison, Terrell Stafford, Gary Bartz, Harry Connick Jr. and Jamie Ohlers, the musical pedigree of their work continues to be recognised by peers, industry and audiences alike. Consisting of Sam Anning (Bass), Michael Perkins (Drums) and Glyn MacDonald (Piano) the Glyn MacDonald Trio draw influence from diverse ends of the musical spectrum. From Classical through to Latin, and coupled with a knack for infectious toe-tappin’ swing, their collective works rest comfortably on a bed of groove-oriented originality.
"Glyn serves it up. He isn’t into just playing chords and devices but rather describing things with music, describing specific feelings or abstract concepts. He has a vision and his music will take you there if you allow it."
Barney Mcall
New York pianist, Blue Note recording Artist, Pianist for Gary Bartz
"An impressive young pianist who explores the musical possibilities with an enquiring mind and virtuosic skill. Watch this space!........."
Helen Matthews
Jazz Program Producer, Perth International Arts Festival
"MacDonald plays with style and restraint, and Sam Anning (Bass) and Michael Perkins (Drums) follow suit. The three men bounce ideas off each other with practised ease. MacDonald also impresses as a composer. His melodies refuse to follow predictable routes, and his harmonies twist away from sugariness. When all five musicians play together, it's not hard to be reminded of the Miles Davis Quintet."
Peter J Casey
Canberra Times (Jazz Reviewer)
"An appealing piano voice and a promising approach. Keep making the good music"

"The opening White Silence reveals a fine delicacy of touch from the leader, ably abetted by the full-bodied bass of Sam Anning and Michael Perkins' laid back drums. Initial Reaction is a steamer, highlighting the burnished trumpet of Mat Jodrell and quicksilver alto of Carl Mackey. Alone on the Mountain was written by Glyn for Mat's yearning trumpet, redolent of longing. The Golden City is the trio alone and sparkling while City Lights brings back the horns for another up tempo romp with Carl on Tenor. Requiem for Honesty finds the trio in reflective mode again while 2nd Set at the Supper Club features a soaring Mat and incandescent Carl, again on tenor and as impassioned as a Brecker or Lovano. This was penned by Glyn especially for Carl.
All seven of these pieces were written by Glyn and demonstrate his skill with all facets of the genre. The remaining three compositions are by the bassist and are essayed by the trio alone. Aconcagua is a suitably respectful, even awe-filled piece dedicated to the world's second highest mountain in the Andes. Dr Ums is a happy, Latino piece that lifts the mood and the final work Deep Blue, not a blues but a thoughtful ballad.
The CD was superbly recorded by the multi-talented Lee Buddle at Loop Studios. It takes a jazzman to know how to get the best out of his peers! This 70 minute CD goes to show how much jazz talent can be found in Perth and is heartily recommended.

Unity, each musician complimented the other whether backup or lead.
author: Dave WilfongThe oneness and unity of the musicians was glowing. There is a spirit from with in that shown through. Their supporting of each other whether lead or accompliment was pure unity in spirit, love and purpose.
