notes

Adventures on Earth, the first full-length album release from Minneapolis-based band Glorious Monster, was released July 18th 2007, at The Varsity Theater in Minneapolis, Minnesota. A cohesive marriage of soaring melodies, transient textures, and poignant lyrical ideas, Monster’s music is as accessible as it is unique. Embracing a wide and eclectic range of instruments and innovative production techniques to explore themes of joy, melancholia and paranoia, Glorious Monster boldly bends the boundaries of lyrical pop music to create a truly original sound.

The culmination of over a years worth of writing, recording and producing, Adventures on Earth embodies a colorful palette of lyrical ideas and emotions in its presentation of both the miraculous and the disturbing aspects of the modern world. An intricate combination of guitars, keyboards, and studio wizardry compliment the sweet falsetto of vocalist Brian Casey. Beautiful, haunting, and powerful, Monster’s debut is as diverse as it is cohesive, flowing seamlessly from beginning to end rendering Adventures on Earth not merely a collection of songs, but a genuine album.

A two man team in the studio and three headed beast live, Glorious Monster is made up of Danny Burke (electronic musician/pianist) and Brian Casey (vocalist/guitarist), and visual member Anton Friant, who met while attending the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota. After graduating from St. Thomas in the spring of 2005, they formed their own music production company, Skeptic Music, and started making a name for themselves as the music production team, The Skeptics. As The Skeptics, they have written and produced music used in national television advertisements, movie trailers, and television shows, as well as scored several short and feature-length nationally released films.

Glorious Monster also released an EP of Adventures on Earth remixes December of 2007, the In The Movies Remix EP, featuring remixes of several tracks from Adventure on Earth as well as new takes on David Bowies Space Oddity and the Christmas song O Holy Night.

2008 has seen The Skeptics embark on another project as well, the Neo-Disco Electro-Rock outfit Man is Doomed. Man is Doomed will start playing live in the fall or 08 to promote their bold dance music debut, Escape to Europa. After the release of Man is Doomed, The Skeptics plan on returning the studio to work on the second full length Glorious Monster album.

  • Adventures on Earth... a caricature of humanity and a portrait of the unknown
    author: Kristina S. Hewitt

A stratospheric tenor with emotional savvy and his digital counterpart take the complexities of planet earth to new heights, with soaring choruses, mysterious sounds, and poignant lyrics that go, "we're all born into the same world …" This is the stunning achievement of Glorious Monster’s debut album, “Adventures On Earth.” The band itself is made up of two parts; Danny Burke and vocalist Brian Casey, both of whom play multiple instruments on the album. Together they encapsulate a rare and illustrious sound reminiscent of Trent Reznor’s lyrical expertise, but not shy of the same profound beauty found in Thom Yorke & Fiona Apple’s voices. Particularly when Brian Casey’s delicate falsetto swoops in and out, crooning elegantly through “In the Movies,” or dives deep and bears more weight in “Angela” with lyrics “So tired of hoping for something that’s not real,” do they match Reznor, Apple, or Yorke’s knack for the hauntingly beautiful. They clearly have taken time to utilize their talents in the production of this album and with it, rectified a piece of art both a caricature of humanity and a portrait of the unknown. With this album, Glorious Monster not only put themselves on the map, but unlocked new ways and ideas of thinking in this unhinged and ever changing world of ours. With so many tracks to choose from, and the repeat button on overdrive, it’s unlikely that this is the last you will hear of them. -Kristina S. Hewitt
