notes

So who's behind the irresistible moniker of Girlyman, a trio that fits the bill for swirling styles and gender roles, both individually and collectively? Doris Muramatsu and Tylan Greenstein, whose 2002 debut as The Garden Verge received an Outmusic Award for Best New Recording by a duo, make up two-thirds of Girlyman. Rounding out the group is former Bostonian and Boston Music Award winner Nate Borofsky.

The accolades don't stop there, however. In 2002, Girlyman was voted "Most Wanted to Return" by fans at the prestigious Falcon Ridge Folk Festival; surprisingly, the trio had formed as a musical unit only a few months before the event. One listen to the 12 tracks on Girlyman's first studio project, "Remember Who I Am," and you'll understand why they snagged an audience-favorite nod so effortlessly.

Their resonant sound is one that you're almost guaranteed not to expect. Equal parts Alison Krauss & Union Station and REM, Girlyman's mellow, rootsy atmospherics feel right at home in an intimate acoustic venue like Harvard Square's Club Passim, where the trio recently performed. The group members trade songwriting responsibilities on most numbers, though their techniques flow together as smoothly as their electric harmonies.

Aptly titled, "Remember Who I Am" is a stirring collection of remembrances -of friends, of lovers, of ways of life. "Viola," the disc's lovely opening elegy, dips and soars more gracefully than many songs of its kind ("I drowned myself tonight in sangria/ Made with sliced up fruit and cheap marsala"). Other ballads such as "Say Goodbye" and "The Shape I Found You In" move deeply and deliberately courtesy of Joe Dye's pedal steel guitar, which floats through the songs like a somber ghost. The dreamy "Maori" boasts a gorgeous melodic finesse as it contemplates the faraway natives of New Zealand, while "Amaze Me" tells a quirky tale of love for America in a dark time. Each song hooks into what's visceral and true. -Jason Roush, Bay Windows

"Really good, really unexpected, and really different." - The Village Voice

"Girlyman's strength lies in its harmonic, multi-instrumental mastery of buoyant,pop-folk numbers with elusive, poetic lyrics." - The Washington Post

"Supercharged with passion and deep musicality." - Catie Curtis

"Girlyman is truly a musical treasure. With gorgeous songs and detailed arrangements, they are a breath of fresh air every time I hear them. Girlyman is just what the music world needs!" - Matt Smith, Manager, Club Passim

  • What a brilliant listen - every track a winner
    author: Sandy

This was my first experience with Girlyman & I am seriously impressed. From the mellow heart of 'the shape I found you in' to the frolic of 'postcards from Mexico', Girlyman show-off their folky magic & inspired harmonies with confidence & moxy. Especially love 'montpelier'... great work.

This CD is amazing. Every single track is beautiful and different. The harmonies are lush and intricate and different and the songs are so well crafted they are a delight to listen to. Remember who I am has a permanent place in my CD player.

LOVE IT! LOVE IT! I haven't stopped playing it since i've received it. I play it in my jeep then I take it out and bring it in the house to listen to it some more. I can't wait for the Next CD. I've recommended to my coworkers also. Thanks so much. Rosetta

  • Fantastic!
    author: Annika Jayne

Great gentle melodies that evoke both melancholy and some kind of ligtness. The harmony sining sometimes reminds me of The Mama's and the Papa's, sometimes of Peter, Paul and Mary - yet this CD is way too individual to be compared to any other artist! I must say I really enjoy listening to it - in fact the CD didn't leave my CD player for two weeks after it had arrived!

  • Wow.

Brilliant harmonies. Stunning, really. Definitely one that that stays in my CD player.

This CD hasn't left my player since it arrived in the mail. The blend of vocals is a little chilling (that's good...really good). Their sound is like no other out there.

  • Excellent
    author: dbees

Excellent cd. Well worth seeking it out. The band owes a vote of thanks to the governor of California and his use of the phrase "girlymen". The word (Girlyman) caught my eye while searching for another band and here we are. A new find that will keep me coming back for their next cd.

  • As with their album Little Star, incredible 3 part harmonies
    author: Bruce Thulin

Had already listened to their album Little Star, so enjoyed more of their talented vocals, the harmonies between the three of them are so tight and enjoyable to hear.

  • WOW!

Incredible cd! Happened to stumble across on CD Baby and sorry it wasn't sooner because I can't get enough of it. Great cd from start to end. Can't wait to get their other album.

  • AWESOME!

Got this CD in early 2005 and loved it. Saw Dar Williams in Atlanta last night and (surprise!) Girlyman opened. Wow . . . was impressed before I heard them live, but even more so now.

  • Fabulous... Beyond Words...it is soooo Good!
    author: Sabrina Spear

Girlyman is incredible... the three of them can write, play and sing! They are right up there with Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Peter, Paul and Mary, reen and Root and Copper Wimmin! The CD "Who I Am" is fresh and new every time I listen to it. May you be blessed by rocketing to the top of the charts not only here in the US but all over the world!

  • author: Sandra Peace

I saw Girlyman for the first time in Santa Rosa when they were the opening act for The Indigo Girls...They were FABULOUS.....I can't wait until they come back here again and I hope they produce abother album again soon....You guys Rock....Thanks

  • A must-have CD!!!
    author: S. Beck

I can't thank CDBaby enough for introducing me to Girlyman. I bought 'Remember Who I Am' and I can't stop listening to it. This CD prompted me to attend a local concert in which Girlyman was the opening band. Live performance was just as good! Highly highly recommended for any folk, singer-songwriter, excellent music, fan. A+

  • A must have for every music lover!
    author: Lynn

I have purchased this cd for myself twice and three others as gifts. Countless other friends have bought it on recomendation or upon hearing it at my house. Few cd's impact me this way. Brilliant and tight harmonies..magnificent!

  • I Love This CD!
    author: Scott T. Finn

I received the Girlyman CD 'Remember Who I Am' about a week and a half ago. Since then I have not been able to stop listening to it. I listen in my car, at work and at home as well. This CD is absolutely amazing. I love the harmonies Girlyman supplies. So angelic. A great group of voices and talent to boot.

  • This group matters!
    author: Stephen

Girlyman's harmonies are absolutely astounding. I rarely took this CD out of the player in my car (until their follow-up, Little Star, was released). Thoughtful, ambitious arrangements and production. For example, on Montpelier, each of the singers sings lead on a verse and in the following chorus, that singer's harmony part is pushed slightly in the mix. Such details will keep vocal junkies going for a long, long time. For what it's worth, I've bought six copies of each Girlyman CD (so far) to involve my friends here in Europe (where we hope they'll tour before too long).

  • Look out! This trio is exceptional. What a sound!
    author: Chris

There isn't a bad track on this disk! These three are tight! "Viola", the title track caught my attention and I can't stop playing the whole CD. What is most refreshing is that all three are contributing songwriters, each with their own unique style. Together they have created a diverse and captivating collection of songs that can stir your soul or make you laugh. Their harmonies are transcendant. Three unique voices that are magical when united. Don't miss this ride!

  • Great Band!
    author: Tani

This band has great harmonies, good instrumentation and wonderful writing. What more could you ask for? I hope they go a long long way and I hope everyone who loves good solid acoustic pop will hear these wonderful musicians. They deserve all of the praise that is headed their way!

  • unbelievably great with a great blend of humor, harmonies, and instrumentation
    author: Stve Hewitt

If I could give this cd a six star rating I would. From the humorus response to California Governor's remarks about girlymen (what a name for some gender bending)to the undeniable great of the music this is a must own cd for anyone who is interested in great sounds - with that old americanna sound - tracing roots to bluegrass, folk, city scapes, humor, and great great vocals. Not a single bad cut on this cd. Thanks folks!

    author: Steve Hewitt

Yes, I must admit that I have been playing this CD quite a bit - just can't help but really love how this group manages to convey all the qualities of southern mountain music with a twist of the north. Traditions are great-especially new traditions. Keep it up!

  • Soft but witty and relaxing. It makes me think while chilling out, does that eve
    author: Whitney Collins

I thought it rocked- in a very mellow way. The songs feel personal and they draw me in. I love the flow of the disc- soft ballad then Nate does some sort of something that picks it up a bit, they way he does. Anyway, It was good- I like them better live but the cd is second best. Good times were had by all.

  • Fantastic!

I had the opportunity to see Girlyman perform live on three different occasions. Their harmony and stage presence is wonderful, and carries over in the CD. Highly recommended.

  • Great CD!

Found the link on another website and clicked it on a whim.. bought the CD about 10 minutes later!

  • Fantastic harmonies
    author: Bonnie

As an older fan who grew up listening to Peter Paul and Mary, I was stunned to hear the same quality of beautiful harmonies and lyrics coming from these kids. I was very moved.

The harmonies on this CD are amazing! I've been listening to it non-stop since I got it, and am so glad to have found this group!

  • Hell Yeah Girlyman
    author: Jill

Love it. Love it. Love it. I bought it on a whim because their name happened to catch my eye as I was browsing, but Remember who I am hasn't left my cd player since I got it a week ago. Postcards from Mexico is my personal favorite - an anthem for all those who have had someone in their life who is "never far enough away". Buy it. It's worth every penny.

  • thank you brian moody!

got a chance to spend some time with my pal brian there, and we traded cds of new artists we'd been hooked on- me & kate rusby to he & girlyman- wow! that was a great idea! came home & bought the girlyman cd-good pick: thanks brian!

  • What an amazing CD!
    author: Matt Schwartz

I've been listening to this CD every day since getting it. The harmonies and melodies are some of the most beautiful I've ever heard, able to capture so much emotional subtlety and range. They are complex, but not overdone, which is what makes them so moving. Several of the songs -- "Viola," "Hey Rose," "Maori," "The Shape I Found You In," "Amaze Me," are songs that I can rarely listen to without tears. Their version of "My Sweet Lord" is wonderful and spare and intimate, which is a good way to describe much of the album. Listen to it!

  • Took my breath away
    author: Alexia

When I first heard this CD on CD Baby I was mildly interested. When I got it I played it over and over. It has stayed in my CD player for a week now. The Lyrics are heart wrenching, the tunes stay in your head and there isnt a bad song on the album! GIRLYMAN ROCKS MY WORLD!

  • Wow! Wow!! Wow!!!
    author: Brian Nordmann

This is an amazing CD. Fantastic harmonies, curious (sometimes bordering on brilliant) lyrics, comforting instrumentation. A beautiful CD backdrop for a Sunday morning pondering the vagaries of life. Their version of My Sweet Lord will make you finally understand what George Harrison was trying to say. A frequent player on my CD changer, as it should be on yours.

  • Wonderful vocal harmonies!!
    author: Erin

I loved each and every track on this CD. Girlyman has wonderful close vocal harmonies and clear lyrics. I am sure you will play this one over and over again.

  • There are not even enough words!
    author: Tricia

I would give it more stars if that was possible. Saw Girlyman open for Indigo Girls in Louisville and was absolutly blown away! 'Say Goodbye' took me to an emotional place that was almost numbing. Incredible! There aren't enough words for me to use to even begin to describe Girlyman. I must say, thank you to our friends for inviting us to the concert with them so that we were able to expirence this! Looking forward to seeing Girlyman again very soon!

  • great cd with unique lyrics and tight, wonderful vocal harmonies
    author: fRaN

this cd got my attention b/c someone in a review said that they were better than nickel creek. i'm a big nickel creek fan and the suspense was killin me. so, i listened to enough online to know that i wanted to purchase it. this is a great cd with unique lyrics and tight, wonderful vocal harmonies. yes, their sound is similar to nickel creek, but i'm not going to compare. they deserve to have their own identity, they've earned it.

  • Steel locked vocal harmony as only experiencing each other's creativity can exe
    author: Twindad

The first and last songs are the most prolific, harmonic, vocalizations. Other songs are all very good. The writing is young as it should be. The instrumentation is simple, also - for now, as it should be. It will be very interesting to hear where they take this. The Eagles started out acoustically with incredible attention to vocal detail. They seem to be humble and mature enough to keep what's good and make the sky the limit.

  • I was in awe at the harmony and blending
    author: Ljay in Iowa

I saw girlyman at a small venue in Sioux City. I had never heard of them before but was blown away by the awesome harmony and the stories to the songs. Anxiously awaiting the next CD.

  • Harmonies, Harmonies, Harmonies!
    author: a girlyman in philly

So, I'll be honest, I bought this CD based solely on the name of the band and the reccomendations on CD Baby. It totally paid off. This band is amazing. Their harmonies are really quite breathtaking- and the songs are well crafted. Just listen- you'll be happy.

  • Just beautiful. Really.
    author: Kate in Oakland

I got this at the demand of my sister who knows I don't even like folk music. But I love this album. Track three reduced me to tears again just this morning. This is a must-have, as will be their upcoming release!

  • Girlyman is awesome!!!
    author: Mergan Blurney

Girlyman may well be my new favorite band. I bought this CD on a whim, because CDBaby recommended it when I bought Driving North by Chris Pureka (also another good one to check out!) and i love it. I can't stop playing it. TRY IT OUT, EH?

  • Vocals so smooth!
    author: Kurt Patrick Geier

This CD rides on smooth, sirupy vocal arrangements. It's like sitting in a bath of harmony. Sweet and smooth!

  • refreshingly haunting
    author: Jennifer in Boston

It's been a while since I've played a cd over & over, wearing out the repeat button. I saw a show at Passim in Cambridge & was instantly hooked... then was so happy to hear 'Montpelier' played on WUMB 91.9...second hook. 'Amaze me'.. third hook. 'the shape I found you in'..fourth...& so it goes with this album. Please come back to Boston soon!

  • Sweet Harmony
    author: Heather,Vermont

The harmonies of Girlyman whisper across the wind like the northern lights dancing on a midnight sky.

  • Saw them in concert and fell in love
    author: Laura

I saw them in concert promoting this CD and I thought that I was in heaven. Their smooth tones and harmonious blending of voices made my heart sing. This is the third time that I have purchased this CD. I keep finding more and more people who I think should have it. THey all love it too!!

  • Better than Nickel Creek
    author: C. Aaron McNeece

Girlyman is consistently better than Nickel Creek's best efforts. Their voices are a perfect blend. Don't be turned off by the "pump you up" image associated with the group's name. One of the best new groups in recent years.

  • Instantly in love
    author: Eileen Downey

my first time visiting the website, i went to the top sellers. i love nickel creek so thought i'd check these guys out. within 5 songs i was filling out the information so i could buy the cd. they are amazing. unique, too - the blend of their voices is incredible on their gorgeous harmonies, and the songs have a good variety of subjects and sounds. get it. :)

  • author: Shelly

It's pretty much perfection. Honestly, one song is better than the next. You can just play and let it roll till the end....tremendous talent these people.

  • The freshest, heart-grabbing harmonies you may have ever heard.
    author: Ted

I heard these three in concert this summer and they stole my heart. It was an out of body experience, with tingles on top. Now every time I listen to their CD, I'm transported back there. I can't wait for their next, and next....

  • Amazing harmonies + honest lyrics + fun power folk sound
    author: Chris Parmley

    The vocal harmonies on this record are unbelievable ~ at the same time moving, powerful and soothing. The instrumental music is pretty awesome as well! Meaningful lyrics, delivered with such honest beautiful harmonies ~ it is a FUN and compelling listening experience! Every time I listen it feels like I'm receiving a great big wonderfully fulfilling musical hug. It is impossible to hear these guys without totally falling in love with all three of them!!! ( ;

  • One of the best bands I"ve heard in a while!!
    author: Kathleen

I saw Girlyman with the Indigo Girls and was hooked then and there. This is a great band with a terrific album. They have great harmonies with a style that lets you sing along.

  • Beautiful Music... Tried it. Liked it.
    author: Kimberley McNelis

Relaxing on a Sunday morning w/my lover... gentle sounds caressing our ears. That's what this Sunday was, listening to "Remember Who I Am." We both enjoy the album. I can certainly see why Girlyman is opening for the Indigo Girls... they have the talent, a similar sound, and (from what I see on their website) an attitude that fits. To Girlyman: Keep up the great work!

  • EVERY song blows me away...
    author: linda

I can listen over and over and over to this cd. A friend of mine said, "I want to BE them, to be able to sing those harmonies!" I love this music.

  • Simply beautiful
    author: Rusty Petersen

After seeing the live show in Sioux City IA, I knew I had to bring back a copy of Remember Who I Am to Las Vegas. Everyone I've turned on to this record has been blown away. The stand-out track on this album is of course, Viola. It stands one of the most beautiful songs I've heard. The searing dissonant harmonies resolve into a beautiful mix of poignant lyrics and gorgeously tight chords. You can really feel the pain in some of these songs, like Hey Rose, a story of unrequited love and unresolved longing. Say Goodbye, a story of regret for a lost one blends the three members of Girlyman's voices in sweet, but sad perfection. Another stand-out track The Shape I found You In speaks about the beginnings of a particularly rough relationship, using metaphoric images fitting with the slow-picked guitar, and climbing vocal harmony to culminate in a beautiful memory about the beginning. Maori is a huge splash of imagery, that takes you away to a magnificent island. Montpelier is a Dylanesque lonesome song about existence, and perhaps the last seconds of one's life. The only misstep on this album is a cover of the beloved song My Sweet Lord, by George Harrison. The revisit does nothing for the song. Remember Who I Am is a great album, well worth the fifteen bucks to get a copy. The imagery, lyrics, harmony, melody, and fantasic blend of the voices of Muramatsu, Greenstein and Borofsky are top notch. Anyone who loves folk music will love this album, or pop, or country, or just straight up good tunes. I don't remember the last time I cried when I put in an album. In fact, before Remember Who I am, I don't think I ever did. Simply beautiful.

  • Beautiful!
    author: MVOR

My sister-in-law saw Girlyman open for the Indigo Girls and fell in love. She raved so much about them that I decided to get her the "Remember Who I Am" CD. And once I heard their music, I was hooked too. Excellant gift for the holidays!

  • author: tugmuffin

This CD displays some good musicianship and songwriting abilities, and I'll be really excited to hear their lyrics in about ten years when they've had a chance to personally mature just a tad. Maybe it's just me - hey, it's just an opinion - but not every single line has to rhyme. It's much more important that the lyrics retain their integrity. I'm thinking of "Viola" here, in particular. Otherwise, there's nothing else to say but I find myself humming the tunes.

  • Absolutly incredible... "amaze me"
    author: Leah

Girlyman is inspiring. They're harmonies are incredible! Get this cd!! it'll be the biggest mistake if you don't!

  • Gorgeous harmonies, poignant lyrics, and great humor
    author: Totally0Random

For those who don't live close enough to see Girlyman live, don't pass up the next best thing. If you love music--real music played by real, talented musicians with a love for making music--you won't go wrong with buying this CD. I guarantee that if you appreciate lush harmonies, well crafted lyrics, and songs with both emotional depth and humor, you will love this CD. If you do run across a song that's not quite your thing, you can't deny that it's well executed. And you should just stick around for the next song, which is likely to draw from a very different musical genre. These three musicians are so strong that they can make amazing songs in any style. Some songs are definitely folk, some a little twangy, and some have more of a pop feel (the type of pop we can only wish were on the radio). But all of them are amazing. The first two songs are a powerhouse opening, much better than the beginning tracks on the CDs of most well established stars. "Viola" is just gorgeous, and "Hey Rose" is addictive. You could easily listen to just those two tracks and get your money's worth. "Fall Stories" is whimsical. "Say Goodbye," which can be confused as a slightly cheesy breakup song, is actually a lovely tribute to a deceased mentor with some great lines. "The Shape I Found You In" is a simple, sparse song and one of the strongest. Other bands would tack on another verse for a happily-ever-after, which Girlyman keeps it honest and ambiguous. And this band will only get better and better.

  • I AM IN LOVE
    author: Lily

Fell in love when I saw them with the Indigo Girls at the Starland Ballroom and fell in love!!! This CD is awesome and I can't wait for more albums.

  • author: Jen

This CD is phenomenal, and I'd recommend it to anybody who's ever appreciated good harmonies. Got the CD after seeing them open for the Indigo Girls and it's a new favorite. They're even more incredible live, and I can't wait for the next CD to be released!

  • Harmonies to make you cry!
    author: Tammy M

This is an amazing CD . . . bought it after seeing them at Falcon Ridge, buying another copy to replace the scratched up (but well loved!) original. It did not leave my CD player for a week after I first bought it, Amaze Me had me sobbing. Truly amazing group of musicians and they are fabulous live too! Cannot wait for thier next CD!

  • Top shelf! Crank it up and sing along!
    author: John F

Resonant harmonies and three bandmates that clearly have fun making beautiful music together! Saw them in Easton, MD with DaVinci's Notebook about a year ago and bought their CD then... but managed to lose it recently (arghhhh!). Just bought another copy... going without was just not an option... and can once again enjoy Maouri, Amaze Me, and the other excellent tracks!

  • I heart Girlyman
    author: nerdymcnerd

This CD is amazing - their voices flow together like northern lights into my ears. When they harmonize I can feel it in my lungs (that's a good thing). Beautiful songs - I wish I knew the background to some of them, but that just makes it even more mysterious. Buy this one - it'll be in your player for awhile.

This group has the best harmonies I've heard since the Indigo Girls came along. The songs are clever, soothing and fun, all at the same time. All members have great voices, but the moments in each song when everyone is singing are breathtaking. I can't stop listening to this CD. Buy it, you'll be glad you did.

i thought this cd was (and is) amazing. the songs are all great. they are haunting and beautiful and fun and heartfelt all at once. actually, the only song on the cd i don't like is the one they didn't write (my sweet lord). i am very impressed with the mixing of harmonies, really good accoustic music, and lyrics that speak directly to me and my life.

  • author: Margarita Esquibel

I'm always up for something new. So, I saw Girlyman at the Indigo girls concert music I don't normally listen to but this blew my mind. "The shape I found you in" was beautiful and I loved it. I'm glad I went to see it. I'm a fan forever.

These songs are some of the best listening I've encountered. The harmonies, lyrics and energy are exquisite. After listening for one week, I bought five more copies and sent them to friends. This is the first time in my 40 years that I've done this. Keep up the good work and let me know when you're coming West! drp7@earthlink.net

crystal clear voices, beautiful harmonies, the songs on the disk have a nice array of rhythyms and styles (from slow and serious to fast and upbeat) amd moods (both serious and fun) simply one of the best CDs which I have heard in years! they remind me of The Story

  • Simply beautiful

I saw Girlyman at the San Diego Pride Festival and loved every second of it. Through all their silly jokes and technical difficulties, there was a realness in themeselves and in their music that drew me in. It didn't take me long to order their cd when I got home. I listened to the whole album at least four times before I could bring myself to take it out. Check them out. You will not be disappointed!

I listened to Amaze Me on a link for the upcoming Boston Folk Festival and together with my husband decided to go on the sunday because of Girlyman. We are from Sheffield England and will be visiting Boston when the festival is on. I ordered the Cd to listen to the music before we come to Boston and think it is great to chill to (although not necessarily some of the more sombre lyrics) - the harmonies are wonderful.

  • Peaceful, thoughtful
    author: Noe

The harmonies on this CD are very sweet, the lyrics are thoughtful and the music in general is very interesting. The way the three voices interlink with each other and the sometimes exotic instruments featured on the album makes for a unique sonic tapestry. I do feel that this is an album that could have come out in the 60s...that's also a reason why I like it.

  • Calming
    author: Rebecca

I listen to the "Remember who I am" CD all the time. Girlyman has such a beautiful sound. The harmonies are exquisite and calming.

  • Soaring harmonies/great writing/great arranging
    author: Michael Monagan

I heard Amaze Me on folkalley.com and had to buy the CD. Although it is the outstanding track, the whole CD is full of great songs and stirring harmonies. I only hope they travel to the west coast so I can see them live.

I heard "The Shape I Found You In" on the radio and was impressed. I bought the CD and was blown away. I especially love "Viola." This band is folksy, edgy, and has vocal and songwriting contributions from all three members. It has beautiful melodies and tight harmonies. I'm already waiting for their next album!

  • damn!

I could just float away on the harmonies and the music. Sooo refreshing! GM's gift to us.

I'm very happy with this cd. I've played it daily. I highly recommend it.

  • My neighbors are tired of hearing Girlyman!
    author: Jennifer

I heard Girlyman with Catie Curtis and loved 'em! This whole CD is great - I can't pick a favorite song because I like them all. I play it LOUD all of the time. My daughter's 18 months and starts dancing when Fall Stories comes one.

  • Perfect, Simply Perfect

I was hooked immediately with Viola. All of the songs are refreshing, beautiful, and clear. Listening to this record is a truly wonderful experience from the first to the last note.

  • Girlyman in my head
    author: Kerry

This CD has such beautiful, singable songs. Great variety of melodies and moods - favorites are Say Goodbye and The Shape I found You In. Gorgeous, poignant, heart-breaking, reviving...amazing. Also fun ones - upbeat/jaunty sounds and words. I haven't listened to anything else in my car since I got it a week ago.

  • Has been on my fav playlist since I bought it
    author: Glenn

The lyrics are great, the music is even better. Clever, funny, tight harmonies, I was soooo pleasantly surprised. So far everyone who has listened has loved the CD. Thank you and I am looking forward to more.

  • Addicted and loving it!
    author: moteq

Another one falls to the Remember Who I Am addiction. The songs themselves are so well conceived and recorded, and as a whole the album itself has an integrity I don't usually find in a group's first offering. It's found its niche in my album collection with artists like David Matheson and Simon and Garfunkle.

  • Connects young and old
    author: Elizabeth

As I listen to all the songs on "Remember Who I Am," not only am I moved by the beauty of the music and singing, but also by the fact that I'm brought back to my younger days of the 1960's. How wonderful that Girlyman knows how to create music that is so meaningful to more than one generation!

  • Addictive
    author: Lisa

This is an addictive CD, don't buy it unless you're willing to listen to it continuously !

  • all I can say is wow!
    author: Rebekah

I listened to the clips on CDBaby once and knew I had to have this CD! I got the CD and listened to it over and over and over again. I am in LOVE with it! The harmonies are amazing - especially the Sangria line in Viola - I love that harmony.... All in all its an excellent CD.

  • Harmonies that grow on you
    author: Tanas

I am a Catie Curtis fan and heard about GMan that way (they're opening for her on her upcoming tour). I went to their site and downloaded a few bits... A few days later, I bought the CD. I am now an official, registered, and happy Girlyfan - though I can't quite well remember how I got there... My memory gets blurred after the moment I started to play the demo bits I had downloaded, and started to chant bizarre hymns in a trance.

  • Love it!
    author: Erin

I bought this CD for my husband's birthday. We really love it, and it hasn't left the CD player since it arrived. The songs are amazing: deep and meaningful.

  • No let down.
    author: Curtis

After hearing one of the songs from this CD on radioIOacoustic, I decided to take a shot on buying the CD. I wasn't let down, and was pleasantly surprised to find that I liked all of the songs, not just a few.

  • Holy blow my socks off!!
    author: katie g.

This CD is entrancing and mesmerizing. This collection of songs from Girlyman is stellar. From beginning to end I was blown away by the incredible vocal arranging and tight musicianship. "Amaze me" makes me weep, "Viola" gets me weak in the knees, and "Even If" makes me want to jump and shout about my house. You've got to hear this CD - it will rock your world!

  • pleasantly surprised
    author: Lisa

I purchased this CD based on recommendations of some people I don't know very well and I am really pleased with the purchase. Postcards from Mexico alone is almost worth the price of the CD. Viola, Fall Stories and Hey Rose are other favorites.

  • Fresh, soothing, and happy.
    author: Andy Jagodzinski

My first Girlyman CD and it's wonderful. Some of the songs are so finely harmonized that you step into a trance of sound. I hope Girlyman continues unadulterated for a long time.

  • Harmonies that bring you closer to (if you so believe) God
    author: Michael Conrad (fretlessmike@hotmail.com)

It could be my vote for album of the year...but considering it came out last year, which year shall I pick? So very few CDs keep you hooked from beginning to end, but this is one....I'm a slave for beautiful harmonies, and this album is drowning in them. There are so many things I want to say about how great this album truly is, but to keep it short (or as short as I'm able, anyway) I'll offer up that listening to this makes me want to give up my job,hit the road and sing my ass off entertaining the masses...THIS is the reason I wanted to be a musician in the first place! It touches me artistically in ways I can't even describe. If you three ever need a bass player who sings accurate harmonies to provide a fourth voice with some bass, tenor or alto (even some falsetto soprano), let me know! And if you don't become obscenely popular, that will surely be a sign of the Apocalypse....THANK YOU for "Remember Who I Am."

  • just awesome!
    author: Reinhard

What a discovery. Clever song-writing paired with mind-boggling harmonies. A recording you can listen to over and over again

  • Theives know no Girlyman
    author: Neilios

Recently my car was stolen. After it was recovered, I went to check it out. The engine was gone, but my Garden Verge CD was still there. Whew. It was all o.k. Now Girlyman kicks even more butt. You guys rock and roll and get me through the day.

  • Why take it out??
    author: Maggie

I heard this for the first time in my girlfriend's car CD player. We were on our first date and I think we heard the album through at least twice on the way out of DC. She didn't take it out for a few weeks. I did not complain. Focus on the lyrics, center on the instrumentation, listen to the 2 blend together... it's all good. Just keep it in your CD player constantly. Really. You're not a dork for it-YOU HAVE GOOD TASTE.

  • beautiful.
    author: Joey

I saw Girlyman live at Club Passim in Cambridge, MA, and was very impressed. The CD is great too! All 3 band members are great songwriters and singers. A different song becomes my favorite song on different days and in different moods. Every song is quality!

No kidding around, this is a WONDERFUL album. Only the deaf could fail to appreciate their harmonies. In a better world this would be a critical and popular success. Everyone should own at least one copy.

  • Lovely and Amazing
    author: Erin Matthiessen

I heard about Girlyman through a short blurb in a magazine. Sounded intriguing so I took a chance and bought it....Glad I did, because this CD is lovely and amazing. I like the spare instrumentation, the warm voices, the incredible harmonies, the heartfelt songwriting. This is a sweet but not saccharine CD, a bit melancholy as befits people who feel deeply. This is really a very moving CD. I play it constantly.

This CD never leaves my changer in my car -- it rejuvenates me after a long day at work! There isn't one song on it that I don't love. After hearing them live in Delaware, and now purchasing their CD, Girlyman is one of my favorite artists.

I went to Google one day and typed in 'Girlyman' for the fun of it, found out there was a band by that name, found that they had a song named 'Hey Rose' and decided to take a listen. Turns out that's my new favorite song. I bought the CD. Turns out I love every other song on it too. - Rose

  • One of the most listenable debut albums In a long while
    author: Don Elwell

Strong writing, strong voices, and harmony arrangements reminiscent of early Jefferson Airplane meets Two Nice Girls, if you can picture that, makes this album a real pleasure from one end to the other. Like a lot of the reviewers regarding this disk, I find I've listened to it again and again. Pick this thing up.

  • Oi! So good. Better than chocolate!
    author: Danny Katz

Ahh- I've been following Girlyman ever since they were Girlyboy, oh so long ago. But I digress already. Folks- go out and buy multiple copies of this CD for anyone that appreciates great music, supreme harmonies and excellent songwriting! I look forward to buying more and more copies of this CD to spread the joy of Girlymusic to the world. Do the same! The holidays are just around the corner... :)

  • Buy this CD.
author: Bill Stella, WRSU-FM Chief Announcer

I've just received and am listening to the new Girlyman full-length debut album "Remember Who I Am" as I type and... [at loss for words]... Would those of you simply thrilled to hear the words "new Girlyman album" just go with that feeling telling you to run and do whatever impulsive thing you need to do to get your hands on it go do so? And would those of you who may not fall into the above category, please, if you know and trust my opinion, do not hesitate to follow suit? And for those of you in neither category, just take note that, perhaps unbeknownst to you until now, people all around you are running around in a somewhat crazed fashion to have their own copy of the new Girlyman album, and what are YOU doing just SITTING there, watching all the hubbub, bub? New great music. Girlyman. "Remember Who I Am". Now. Love it.

  • In one word: Amazing.
    author: Jen

I first heard Girlyman at the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival, and immediately fell in love with their lyrics, music, and of course, their amazing harmonies. I immediately purchased Remember Who I Am, and was happy to find that first impressions held true. The CD did not leave my car stereo for literally a month, and when a friend borrowed it for a week I practically fell apart. Every song on this CD is a gem. Personal highlights include Say Goodbye, Montpelier, David, and the two shining stars for me, The Shape I Found You In and Viola. I could listen to those two songs for hours on repeat. Another highlight is Girlyman's re-working of the George Harrison classic, My Sweet Lord. So, get this CD. Yes, really, get it. You will thank me for it. You'll thank the band for it. But most importantly, you'll thank yourself for it, and in these uncertain times of low self esteem, isn't a little praise, even from yourself, worth 15 dollars? Oh yes...I think it is. :)

  • Everyone loves this CD
author: Thumbs Up from Boston, MA

Catchy pop harmonies with vocal talent and musical depth - a CD you can play from beginning to end again and again. I really liked all the songs but if you are thinking about this CD be sure to listen to Postcards, Even If, and Amaze Me to hear a range of styles. My personal favorite is the deadpan humor of Montpelier. I expect most people would enormously enjoy this CD.

  • girlyman rocks my socks
    author: arjuna greist

This is a fun, fantastic, fire-eating cd. Tracks like "Hey, Rose" and "Postcards from Mexico" highlight the group's tendency towards witty, non-cliched songwriting and interesting harmonies, while "Amaze Me" (my personal favorite) showcases a quietly gripping socio-political consciousness. See this group live if you can, cuz it just gets better in concert.
