notes
Girl Howdy roars into town on a mission to keep the honky-tonk torch burning bright! This 6-piece combo features an all-gal frontline tearing it up on fiddle, steel guitar, piano, flat top guitar and soaring vocal harmonies, backed by a top-notch rhythm section of upright bass and drums.
Playing music from the classic honky-tonk era spanning the late 1940's to the early 1960's, Girl Howdy plays songs from such legends as Hank Williams, Kitty Wells, Buck Owens, Loretta Lynn, Ray Price, the Davis Sisters, Webb Pierce, as well as honky-tonk-inspired originals. Hogwild for raw twang, this band plows through their retro-based repertoire with energy, enthusiasm and utter devotion.
"Girl Howdy packs some serious gurl-harmony with classic honky-tonkin’
grooves." - Providence Journal
"...sweet harmonies, sliding steel and sawing fiddle--define Girl
Howdy's genuine jukebox sound. With a few exceptions, males dominated
the post-war Honky Tonk scene. But in the 21st Century Girl Howdy
rules..." - Hudson Valley Bluegrass Association Jamboree
The band line-up includes Betsy-Dawn (BeeDee) Williams on acoustic guitar, Paula Bradley on piano, Rose Sinclair on steel guitar, and Emma O'Donnell, on fiddle. On this live recording, recorded at the 2005 Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival, Girl Howdy is joined by special guests June Drucker on upright stringbass and Paul McTaggart on drums.
Betsy-Dawn (BeeDee) Williams: guitar, lead vocals
When not belting it out and playing rhythm guitar with Girl Howdy, BeeDee plays scrubboard and sings harmony in the Rhode Island-based zydeco band Slippery Sneakers and plays guitar and sings in the New Hampshire-based western swing band, The Westernaires. Formerly, BeeDee was a member of the rockabilly-influenced roots rock 'n' roll band, American Roadhouse (guitar and vocals) and with two bluegrass bands, Lost Wages and Pioneer Valley Bluegrass, (upright stringbass & vocals). Additionally BeeDee has her own CD of original tunes, entitled "Rocket Girl" released on the El Toro Records label, also available here at CD Baby.
Paula Bradley: piano, lead vocals
When she's not tinklin' the ivories and croonin' with Girl Howdy, Paula plays guitar, banjo, and banjo ukulele, sings and dances in the old time bands Moonshine Holler (with husband Bill Dillof) and The Haywire Gang (with banjo legend Mac Benford and fiddle powerhouse John Hoffmann). She performed and toured as a member of “Jawbone” with old time fiddle master Bruce Molsky and bluegrass banjo innovator Tony Trischka and was a founding member of the old time string band “The Rhythm Rats” with whom she made two acclaimed recordings. Paula is a popular instructor at traditional music camps and in addition to her musical talents, is an accomplished flatfoot dancer.
Rose Sinclair: steel guitar, harmony vocals
Adding the twang to Girl Howdy, Rose plays a 1950's-era Carvin double-neck 8-string non-pedal steel guitar and loves the A6 tuning. An avid multi-instrumentalist, she also plays clawhammer banjo, zydeco accordion, and performs as a tap dancer and body percussionist. Rose has taught at folk music camps on both coasts and appears on various recordings. She was a founding member of Green Linnet recording artists the Heartbeats Rhythm Quartet, an alt-trad band that toured extensively in the U.S., Canada and Germany in the late '80s and early '90s, and was featured on A Prairie Home Companion, Mountain Stage, E-Town and Voice of America. Rose has toured as a multi-instrumentalist with Robin & Linda Williams, James Leva and Memory Theater, Rani Arbo and daisy mayhem, Martha Scanlan, and the Crooked Jades.
Emma O'Donnell: fiddle
Formerly with the bands Jim & Jennie and the Pinetops and everybodyfields, Emma also played a weekly gig at the Knitting Factory, an alternative music club in New York City. Emma has taken the stage at many a fiddle contest, emerging with the top prize.

Great songs, except first one is a bit too harsh. Only problem is there are only 6 songs on the album. That's half an albums worth.
Great album, strong vocal harmonies
