notes

Last year my wife and I went to hear a certain jazz artist. He is well respected, as is the venue where he played. The music was challenging to follow, which is ok, but what struck me was that no one in the place was smiling or moving, or grooving, or doing anything that would indicate that these people were having fun! When I watched the band members, it was obvious who the audience took their cues from. The musicians were extremely serious looking. We left early, not because the musicianship was poor, but because no one seemed to be having any fun, least of all ourselves, .

This was like a lesson in how NOT to do a Giocoso concert. Giocoso is a band that really has fun playing music. And it
shows! While not every song brings grins, you can tell that they are getting into the emotion of the music. It may be a
beautiful ballad, a tune that almost brings tears to you eyes or one that makes your feet want to move, but you can tell that they are feeling it. And if you let yourself, you can too!

While the music is definitely within the contemporary jazz realm, there is a good mix of style here. It may have a Latin feel, a laid back groove, or a driving rock beat, but the emotion is always there.

Giocoso, (GEE-OH-COE-SO) means jokingly or humorously, and is an Italian musical term denoting the emotion with which a piece is to be played (like: andante, allegro, etc.).

Tony (sax), Dave G. (keyboards), Alfonso (bass), and Dave W. (drums), started playing together in 1985, and gigged
together for a few years until they began to marry and have children. So they amicably disbanded in 1990. However, they
would get together yearly for one client's annual event. In 1997, that gig proved too much fun to not regroup. So Giocoso
was reformed* with these four guys from the original group. This, their long time coming, self titled release features some fine guest appearances on vocals, guitar, and electric violin.

So if you walk into some jazz spot and see a band lacking emotion, and the crowd way too serious, you can rest assured that you have NOT walked into a Giocoso performance!
