notes
Gina Young is a singer/songwriter, actress/activist,
daredevil dyke dreamer and she's coming your way!
Gina's eclectic musical style pushes the envelope of solo
acoustic folk music; infusing melody-driven guitar
compositions with punk rock and politics.
Her passion for activism is evidenced by her frequent
performances in support of the peace movement as well as
for feminist and queer causes and organizations. She
performed in support of The Violence Against Women Act on
the Steps of the Supreme Court, as well as taking the
stage
at events such as The Midwestern BLGT College Conference
2003, The Mid-Atlantic Women's Rights and Empowerment
Conference 2003 and National Youth Pride 2002.
Gina has appeared on MTV and Oxygen. She was also
featured on the February 2003 episode of In the Life (the national gay and lesbian television newsmagazine) in a segment hosted by Broadway performer StaceyAnn Chin that includes interviews with Donna Dresch, Sarah Dougher, the
Butchies, Carrie Brownstein of Sleater-Kinney and JD Samson of Le Tigre. Gina's song "Supergirl" was featured on a November 2002 episode of Dawson's Creek.
INTRACTABLE, Gina's debut album, was released on 28 Days
Records in Summer 2002 and the Christian Right has been
absolutely thrilled. (smirk)
Other recording appearances include "College" on the 2001
Ladyfest Compilation, "Prom Queen" on the Acoustic
Revolution Comp, "Surrounded" on the GrrrlFest Comp 2002,
the 1999 Prom Queen demo cd, and backup vocals for other
fabulous regional musicians.
Two of Gina's music/theater pieces have had successful
runs Off-Off Broadway: "she cuts herself / she likes to write" (2001) and "phone|sex|cancer" (2002-2003). Both shows
earned a cult following and dealt with issues important
to the lives of young queer wimmin.
SOME PRESS QUOTES:
"Here is a talent that is equal to Ani DiFranco and Tori
Amos in integrity. Even if you strip Intractable of its
steadfast activism and feminist stance, it is apparent
that Gina Young could quite possibly be the next gigantic
female vocalist inhabiting the East Coast scene."
-- Jason D. Taylor, All Music Guide
"[Gina's song 'College'] does middle-class chick
rebellion even better than Liz Phair."
-- Maya Kremen, The Village Voice
"Gina gives me hope for the world!"
-- Erin Lewis, Curve Magazine
"The combination of intelligent observation and punk
attitude is a winning combination of hooks and focused
angst from this radicalized singer-songwriter. Rocking
rebellion and articulate anti-establishment attacks make
Intractable fully successful political rock."
-- Tom Schulte, Outsight
"Simply put... Gina Young rocks!!! [Her album] will put a
smile on your face as you're rocking out, and have you
looking forward to many new CDs from this folk singer
with punk attitude."
-- Dee Yellowlees, GoGirlsMusic.com
"Gina Young changed the way I look at feminists that make
a statement. This openly proud, gay activist forced me to
pay attention to her gripping lyrics that make prejudice seem like a thing of the past."
-- Katie Kiedyk, CoolGrrrls.com
"We dream of Gina!"
-- Girlfriends magazine

gina young is MORE TALENTED then ani difranco
author: kyleit is an understatement to call this album amazing, especially since it is her label debut.
This is boring.
author: MaxWell, this album is really hands down bad. The song structure is simplistic and mediocre at best, the lyrics are irritating, and its not anything new or intresting.Avoid like the plauge.
AWESOME
author: RubyGina Rocks..her cd is awesome..you should at least give it a try..You'll love it. Shes amazing
Gina is the best!!!
author: SimoneBuy Gina Young's CD!!!! It really speaks the truth. This album says a lot of things that I've felt inside, but never had the words to express. It really gives a voice to those of us who may not have all of the knowledge and/or power to stand up for ourselves in any situation.
This album says what I feel, but never could find words for; two words: buy it!
author: cekThis is what I listen to whenever I lose hope for the future, and afterwards I feel better. Songs like 'Turn the Lights Off', 'Can She Bake a Cherry Pie?' and 'More Like Fiending' are some of the most memorable I've ever heard. This album is a must own.
you should buy it...you konw you wanna..
Awesome cd, very powerful words complete with heart aching/smashing
author: RhondaThis is a cd with songs that make you want to get up and take a stand or just sit back and delve a little. I was slightly disappointed with the length of the songs (it needs more repetition, like repeating the chorus and then using subtle word changes in following verses), but even if I had known that beforehand, I still would have bought the cd because I can't stop listening to it.
wow!
author: marissathis cd is very powerful. it states some very interesting political opinions while keeping a sort of innocent girlish voice. i love it.
hooray for intractable
author: ellen barlowThis album is amazing. I love it and you will too; it has somehting for everyone. And regarding "Kevin's" comments below, i don't think CDBabay hides bad reviews, i just think that generally people who are visiting an indie distribution site know better than to be a$$holes. if an album is not to your liking, move on. Don't disrespect a really talented artist. Personally i thnk you're gonna feel really stupid in 10 years when they're comparing Gina to Bob Dylan or something.
I think they hide bad reviews
author: kevin.. im not amused justed annoyed
watch out Ani
author: BethAn interesting mix of folk and femme... I feel like she took the lyrics of Kathleen hannah, stole ani difranco's gruitar and said "lets go kick butt!" Plus, it's just nice to have more les acts out there.

The CD is fucking awesome!
Dyke Diva at it's finest!
author: LaurenAs always, it took me a while to get used to a brand new cd, let alone a completely new artist (atleast new to me). It's all about the singer's use of her most important instrument... her voice. If I can't fall in love with the voice, I just can't listen to the song at all. Way to go, Gina! The songs were diverse, yet somehow managed to intertwine themselves. Overall, awesome cd.
Great
author: KimFun, yet powerful

Wonderful!
author: MicheleGreat feminist lyrics, she really wraps important issues to all feminists on this album. I'm trying to find her first one, any one know where I can find it?
She rox my sox and my left shoe!
author: mybe im happy?this CD is great....I saw her at a concert at my school and bought her first CD....bought this one not long after....LOVE every one of her songs. (Intractable is my favorite on this CD, G.I.Joe is great on her first one!) BUY IT!
I <3 Gina.
author: AmandaBeth.I loved the cd. It was great. I can't wait til' she comes out with more. I will buy every single one of them :) Her lyrics are one of the greatest.
never heard pissed off sound so fresh and fun
author: SarahThere's something raw about this cd-- no crappy synth or anything to get in the way of Gina Young's hugely appreciated political messages. There's some sweet stuff too-- Turn the Lights Off-- that makes you happy to remember even dyke-daredevil-dreamers get their hearts broken too.
Wow!!
author: KaitlynThis CD is sooo great! My friend had played me a few songs from the album, but after buying the CD I realized there's so much more!! Everyone I've played it for has loved it!! Gina Young's Intractable is great!!
this cd has a refreshing air of garage band sophistication rarely found
author: RgDarlingEnter Intractable. This album offers a fresh garage-band style sophistication that has been long overdue in the music scene. Truly, this album was made to effect a terrific change in the popular music scene. Look out Conservative America, there is free-thinking talent on the loose.
- author: Jason D. Taylor, All Music Guide
"Here is a talent that is equal to Ani DiFranco and Tori Amos in integrity, as songs such as "Surrounded", "Haunted" and "Politician" are a testament to the pop/rock scene on the whole. Even if you strip Intractable of its steadfast activism and feminist stance, it is quite apparent Gina Young could quite possibly be the next gigantic female vocalist inhabiting the East Coast scene."
I stumbled over this gem on accident, glad i did!
author: FuRI came to cdbaby to pick up a melissa ferrick cd because i'd heard so much about her, i put the cd in the cart and the nifty 'if you like this artist...' and gina was there. i listened to a few song clips and very quickly decided i liked what i heard. this cd rocks. the songs are great and get stuck in your head, and you want to sing along... i've already convinced two friends to buy it, they liked it so much.
Fun, fantastic, beautiful music!
author: chelsea reblgerlThis album RoCkS! If you are in any doubt about whether or not to buy this CD let me just reassure you that Gina has a beautiful voice and if the songs you can listen to on CDBaby aren't enough to convince you, you should just hear Turn the Lights Off when its live. The slow songs are my favorites, there's a lot of folk-y stuff on the album too. I love this CD and you will too~ SuPpOrT rOcKeR gIrLs!
